If you don't already know of it, http://www.coinchoose.com/ may help you decide. Do be aware that the profitability can change drastically, shuffling the participants around. It's really a "here and now" ranking rather than being based on long term figures (either past or projected)

I actually went back to mining BTC a few days ago (after a long hiatus) because nothing on coinchoose could beat it.

If the plan is to hold the coins, then I think bitcoin is the only reasonable choice. The more of these alt coins keep coming up, the less likely it is that any of them have any long term value.

If you willing trading for BTC then coinchoose can help you what is most profitable, otherwise stick with BTC  ;)

I've had some success mining Litecoin, but I'd agree with the above - bitcoin mining is probably going to be easiest route into mining coin.

LTC, FTC and Bloocoin also has potential I think

BTC is the best. If you mine with a pool like deepbit, you can expect stability and steady rewards (though payouts can take 36hrs to clear). If you have at least a radeon 5700 or nvidia card, BTC is the way. I've tried LTC and FTC, but the pools don't seem to work out for me, and you have to fine tune for scrypt hashing. You might do well with radeon and windows vista or newer with the altcoins, but keep in mind that exchanges can have hefty withdrawal fees.

Any AltCoin, plus BTC. You should try LTC as the AltCoin so you can earn money on the side. But any coin is okay.

If your starting then BTC is easiest to set up. I found it is harder to set my GPU with scrypt mining required for most of the altcoins to make highest khash/s out of my GPU.

if you mine the coin where everyone else is you will not see real profit for some time, all imho

I tried Litecoin with my GPU but that apparently requires some tuning at which I seem to fail. Even my CPU has higher hash rates than my 5770?!

Problem with mining is the low reward you get. Mining on new altcoins gets you much more coins, but they are useless as long as they don't take off. And how will they take off if nobody cares about yet another altcoin?

If only I started mining a few months back, when it was easy to mine... I'd be filthy rich now :-P

Something you can exchange at a popular market like BTC-E.com. So, my vote is LTC.

I'm new to mining and recently started looking into hardware and such and I had the same question.  I started doing a little research and couldn't find any site helpful in terms of coin values... so, I set up a site (well, more like a single page) which I published yesterday:
http://www.WhereToMine.com (http://www.WhereToMine.com)

Basically, you select your currency (USD, AUS, etc), enter your hashrate, and then click Calculate.  It will show the # of coins/day and estimated $/day that you would make for each type of coin (BTC, LTC, FTC, etc.)

Let me know if you find it helpful... I'm totally open to opinions on it.

Thanks!
