Title: Can I mine Bitcoins with my smartphone?
Post by: calista on June 22, 2011, 01:02:04 PM
it has a dual core cpu so it is pretty powerful.

what app is best for mining?

Won't be worth it.

I don't think it's really feasible. CPU mining generates very low MHashes on the latest desktop processors. Even dual core phones are still vastly underpowered by comparison.

That's pretty much useless, I don't see any point in even trying. Remember, you don't get gradual payout, the only way you'd get anything is if you got an entire block of 50 bitcoins, and the chances of getting anything with something that weak are infinitesimal.

Your GPU is much more important than your CPU, as GPU mining is hugely faster, and considering that my computer with full GPU and whatnot would take years to generate a block at the current difficulty, smartphone mining isn't really worth thinking about. It is a cool idea though, sorry!

I suppose it wouldn't hurt if you want to complement your other CPUs and GPUs with a bit more power. After all, every bit counts, right?

Just an observation here, but this can't be a serious question that requires serious answers.

I have seen this:

http://www.bitcoinplus.com/generate

but as others already mentioned, it's not really worth it. If you want to mine, you need serious machinery.

... this can't be a serious question that requires serious answers.
It sounds like a reasonable question to me.

But there's no point mining on a smartphone. Running bitcoind on my Nokia N900 yields 0.13 Megahashes/second. On average that would generate a block once every 335445 days (about once every thousand years).

You might do slightly better on a smartphone with a GPU, but the next difficulty increase due in a few days will take care of that. The GPU on a smartphone is nothing like the GPU on a 5870 card.

I don't think it worth to try, but i would be interested in the results ;)

I don't think theres an app for this ;)

You have to compile it.

If your phone has an GPU with openCL (like Ipad2) maybe an GPU miner works too.

interesting.. probably not worth the effort and I bet your phone would get hot and you battery would drain like mad, but if your phone runs java, bitcoinplus.com could be an option to try.

I use it with my websites, but I only get a few Mh/s out of it.

Probably not although would be cool. Even viewing my wallet on my phone would be a step up though.

Low mhash/s, more like khash/s but on the flip side VERY low power consumption.

I'd laugh if there was a run on ipod touches or something b/c of the cost vs. power. vs. hashing ability.

My goodness, I can't even begin to think how much this would drain the battery, especially with how short my battery life is already!  I honestly don't see any benefit in mining with a cell phone, unless you like to just do it to support the cause of BTC.

This made me laugh.  Props for getting mining running on your ipad2.  Is this available for ipadx?  What's your MH/s or KH/s?

Not worth it but you can use bitp.it and put it on a HTML page and load up that HTML page a few times.

Six cents per month at the current level of difficulty. Four cents per month from the day after tomorrow. From the generation calculator (http://www.alloscomp.com/bitcoin/calculator.php).

It would kill your phone, my HTC Desire costs £35 a month for 18 months so no point wasting all that money for getting a few pounds worth of BTC lol

CPU mining even on a desktop PC is a no-win game. You pay more for power than you get in BTC. Unless you have your PC running 24/7 anyways it's not worth it.

On a smart phone it's even worse because now you have to charge your phone every hour and it's not as efficient as your desktop CPU.

Where do I find a mining app for my N900 phone? How to setup mining? I wish to complement what I already have in mining ability.I know the implications of mining on a phone so  please don't debate with me about that as I am aware but I choose to experiment and use auch an app on my N900.CPU id OC'd from 600MHz to 1150MHz.Now if only there was a GPU miner for Nokia N900 phone. Also how to overclock N900s GPU to speed up GUI?

Has there been any update to CPU mining in smartphones? I don't care about any debate about cost vs mining from a phone. I don't pay for any of it. I would be happy submitting 5 shares an hour if it meant me getting them for free.

Even if you could get it to work ... you would have SO many problems.

Heat, because you have no vent.  Speed, it would take you a year to mine one BTC probably.  Value, your phone probably costs 600 dollars.

I'm not trying to re-coup the cost of my phone and charging it would be done at work as in I planned to only use it while I mined at work.

I've already got back what I paid for my phone through use of the services it provides me with daily.

The LTC miner is not on the marketplace. There are no miners on the marketplace sadly. :0P

I also though about doing it while I drove places in my car. I'm already running my A/C and the charge will be fine because of my cars motion and battery warranty.

I planned to remove at least the back cover while mining, but was going to gauge it if it worked out.

I however got a feeling that he canned the project.

Of course everyone would love to go around knowing to have a money generator in pocket  ;D

But it's not even worth the headaches to set it up -even if you have free hardware and electricity. I tried for some time to run the bitcoinplus web java miner, both on my pc (both it and electricity are paid by the university) and on my website's visitors', but I've stopped it since I probably wouldn't even have reached the 0,02 BTC (minmum amount to cash out, and 0,01 BTC is fee) this year... and 0,02 BTC is an amount I hope to find laughable soon now that I am on GLBSE  ;)

Oh, litecoins! On my pc I got 2-3 litecoins per nigh, so, on a phone you can maybe hope in a full litecoin per 12h of intense work!

However, I am curious... but the link appears broken to me!  :(

smart phone/tablet CPUs are built for apps and video/sound, not the intense but simple shader and pixel math that a GPU is built for.  even a low end GPU is more powerful then your CPU by a power of ten, but it is very specialized, and does not do anything else very well.  the CPU is the all around number cruncher, and will do most things well.
