Those are usually either Emojis or UTF8 Symbols. You can use http://www.iemoji.com for emojis or http://www.utf8-character.info/ for UTF8

Host them yourself, and you can see how many views your post gets. :)

Not sure that works, the forum uses an image proxy so it caches your image. You won't get a reliable number for views, geographical data, etc.

I believe that one of the reasons the image proxy was implemented was to stop this, after this incident (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=341146.0). The only way to check the number of views is to use the counter built into the forum, however that is not very reliable.

Alongside that, it is rather silly to host emojis when they are available for use in unicode.
