Title: Help me Build a computer
Post by: FinShaggy on May 20, 2013, 05:28:33 PM
I've got 2 friends that know their way around a computer, but we are all fairly new to mining. So I'm asking them for help building this, but I was wondering if you guys could help me.

I want to build a mining machine for 10-20 BTC, and this is the website I plan on buying from (for the computer parts). I am just wondering what would be best. If you can help, please pick the best item from each link :)

Motherboard - https://www.bitcoinstore.com/gigabyte-ultra-durable-3-classic-ga-990fxa-ud3-desktop-motherboard-amd-990fx-chipset-socket-am3-pga-941.html

Harddrive - https://www.bitcoinstore.com/western-digital-caviar-blue-desktop-wd2500aakx-250-gb-3-5-internal-hard-drive-1-pack.html

CPU - https://www.bitcoinstore.com/amd-athlon-ii-x2-270u-2-ghz-processor-socket-am3-pga-941.html

RAM - Think about 2x of these. - https://www.bitcoinstore.com/kingston-2gb-ddr3-sdram-memory-module-1833651.html

Graphics Card - The best - https://www.bitcoinstore.com/xfx-radeon-hd-7970-graphic-card-925-mhz-core-3-gb-gddr5-sdram-pci-express-3-0-x16.html
                      Budget -https://www.bitcoinstore.com/xfx-radeon-hd-7850-graphic-card-860-mhz-core-1-gb-ddr5-sdram-pci-express-3-0-x16.html

You will need a quality 450w-600w Power supply. If you plan and adding more than 1 GPU your wattage will increase. its about 300w for each 79xx card added. The 78xx cards draw less.

+ about 150w for the system.  [300w(gpu)+150w(system)] = around 450w for complete system + 1 card.

Whew...hope that makes sense...

As with all computer builds your mileage may vary. Most of these parts can be found cheaper paying in fiat.

Good luck.

Thank you SO much, I did not expect a reply so fast and that was extremely helpful.

Where do you get power supplies? I grow weed (legally in Colorado), is a power supply anything like a ballast?

Yes..its basically exactly the same yet completely different.

Sounds like you need to do some googling. Search youtube for vids about building PC's. Your only entitled to one spoon fed meal a day around here.

I would stay away from XFX graphics cards. The 2GB Sapphire 7850's may be your best bet, but would be a better deal elsewhere. Although you are using BTC, so that's always a good thing.

I am having someone else do all the real stuff, I'm just getting all the parts.

This project will be coming to fruition in the next month or so.

Next Project:

If I had $2000 to build a computer, what should I get?

I will also be buying FPGAs to run on the 1st computer (meaning before the $2000 computer)so if anyone knows where to get those, let me know.

You can get used 7970 graphic cards on ebay for around $300 each which have a bitcoin hashrate of approx 700MH/sec.
However with the flood of ASIC chips coming online over the next few months it is unlikely that you will ever recoup your original 20BTC investment with this type mining rig.

That's like $1000 and isn't super great (is it?).

Looking for FPGAs, not GPUs.

I think your money will be better spent on a ASIC miner.
More bang for your buck!

I have a rig with 2 x 7950's in it and 1 in storage and I have switched them all off.
Electricity bill does not make it worth my while..

Now waiting for my BFL orders..

Id go 7950s for GPU. CHeaper and you can switch to litecoins down the road and they rock at litecoin mining

Thanks
