Title: What Brought You To Bitcoin
Post by: CryptoJunky on May 20, 2013, 07:46:02 PM
I'd be interested to hear about what peeked your interest in Bitcoin? Was it recent press coverage, a friend or family, or something else?

Good Question!

For me, I am in Financial Services and Business Analytic's so the premise of a non-sovereign, economic majority based current, with cash, check and card attributes, is worth investigating!!

Cheers!

I am a member of the Church of Neuroscience, and I was looking for a cheap alternative to some of the sacraments offered on the site (like Etizolam), and I checked out the Silk Road. And I wasn't sure what the little symbol meant, so I had to learn a little bit about bitcoin and I have been learning more ever since.

Sounds like a whole host of reasons! One of the reasons I'm still interested in Bitcoin is the diverse and expansive group that it attracts, it's fascinating.

Follow up question:

How did you get your first Bitcoin(s)?

I can't remember what exactly tipped me over the edge of full-on curiosity.

I think it was all the rave about the value going up... oh and Cyprus.

Cyprus showed how banks can do whatever the hell they want with people's money. Kind of an eye opener that one.

We already knew banks and government were on a wrong one, but the Cyprus news condensed it into a single event.

Started studying U.S. foreign policy after 9/11. My political awakening followed. I found a money trail connecting most of the worst atrocities in history to the international banks. I started hating banks. Just when I thought I couldn't hate banks anymore, the great recession hit, and I found a way. There is no word in the English language to describe how hideously evil the international bankers are. As my research continued, my hatred grew. I started watching Max Keiser. Max introduced me to bitcoin in the Summer of 2011. My life has never been the same since.

I've always been mad at the US economy, bankers, and politicians.  I wanted money in a decentralized currency.  I never thought it would take off like it did though!  Put over 50% of my money in coins when they were $13.  I'm quite lucky!

I heard about bitcoin over the past year or two, in random science news article headlines that I just glanced over and didn't read.  Then a couple months ago I finally read some article about bitcoin linked by ahem*slashdot*ahem mentioning mining.  Then I looked up what mining is and starting reading about the history of bitcoin.

Then I immediately got depressed that I've been building high-end gaming rigs and running "charity" distributed computing projects for years, when I could have been making money!  ???

Then I got more bummed that on my last build, I built with a watercooled gtx580!  >:(

Now I'm just fascinated by it due to my libertarian political/Austrian economic viewpoints.

Also mining with my newly acquired 7950. :)

Some PulseNews articles I read. I had heard about it a long time ago but thought it sounded kind of silly and expected it to die soon afterwards.

To be honest, I still think it's a little silly but if people value it, I'm down to explore that further. Seems wrought with shady activity though...

I listen to TWiT (This Week in Tech), hosted by Leo Laporte. I heard about BitCoin a few times on the podcast. I looked into it and noticed the price was around $55 USD per coin but it had recently been $254!

Figured I had to look more into this! I now own 1.39 BTC and bought around $75 per. Sure wish I was more ahead of the curve on this. Oh well...

I'm an AM talkshow host.  My co-host brought Bitcoin up in conversation.  (I think it was a few days after the crash.)

I didn't know much about it, but as I was closing out the show, I said I would throw a computer together and try it out - and the phone-lines lit up with callers interested in following the story.

The next day, I went to Best Buy and bought a 7850 and started mining.
It took me 20 days to get to my first bitcoin.
A few upgrades later, and I had my next bitcoin in 10 days.
I blogged the steps I was taking - and my audience fell asleep with boredom.
I've since stopped even mentioning the word on the air.  The perception was get rich quick - and $10 worth of bitcoins a day wasn't impressing anyone.
Now, it's just my own little obsession.

I've heard of Bitcoins back in 2009. At a quick glance, I thought it was like Paypal. Just another payment processor. As the years past, I ignored it and didn't think nothing much about it until I saw an article on Mashable about a Canadian man selling his home and willing to accept payment via Bitcoins. Then I was in awe! What is Bitcoin? What can I do with it? From there I did my research.

I first got into Bitcoin from this article in the New York Times (http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2013/04/11/as-big-investors-emerge-bitcoin-gets-ready-for-its-close-up/).  Then I got Bitcoin-Qt, and got my first bitcoin (or a fraction thereof) from free.btc.pt (https://free.btc.pt/login/?action=register&AFFID=5870).

I'd vaguely heard about it in the last year or so.  More recently a colleague who shares my interest in alternative currencies mentioned it and I decided to find out more.  I found a few sites where you can earn or receive bitcoins, tried out a couple wallets and started receiving bitcoins from the websites.  Bitcoinget is hands down the best bitcoin earning website I've encountered.

I really got into bitcoins during the couple weeks back in March when the value of Bitcoins climbed from $90 to $265 and then fell back down to $60 and back up to where it is now.

Although I don't really understand it, I'm fascinated by the way Bitcoin is introduced into circulation and all the algorithms and high math and computing power that goes into it.

Finally decided it's for real and here to stay. In the process of cleaning out my excess 'stuff' and hitting ebay with it, decided to use revenues to get some ASIC mining gear and see if I can make enough to at least cover rent every month. And my inner early adopter was screaming 'take a chance!'

I started reading about Bitcoin after seeing a few posts on Hacker News. I guess that would have been about 2 - 3 years ago. What's interesting is, after I'd learnt about it I remembered seeing a Bitcoin sticker over the entrance to Oxford Circus tube in London months before. It's amazing where it got to, and so quickly.

I don't think it was the process that made people yawn.  I think people expected that after spending $1000 on equipment, the returns would be more.  When it was "only $10" they were kind of put off that I wasted their time with the prospect.  But honestly, I was just experimenting.  I wasn't an advocate for Bitcoin - I wasn't trying to sell anyone on it - but it impressed the hell out of me.

The same reason I like Computer Science and Economics. :)

The idea of a decentralised economy sounds great to me. Financial institutions need to have less power, imo.
I believe that Crypto-currencies like Bitcoin remove much of their influence, due to not requiring a 3rd-party, and regulations to work properly.

Truthfully, because Bitcoin has become a lot more popular, is why I'm here. If Litecoins had become more popular, I'd probably be more involved with them.

I read up on internet development and like anything based on protocols or other systems which we agree to do together but aren't controlled by governments / companies etc. And it seems to be taking off and could one day become the world's primary form of currency. It was hard to get into but hopefully it will be worth it.

PayPal chargebacks.   I sold items worth $1 only but got 6 chargebacks in 1 day. So I googles if there is a payment system with no chargebacks.  First result is bitcoins.

I used to be an avid Folding@Home guy.  I work for a company in the Supercomputing field and we had lots of servers sitting idle most of the time.  I got us pretty high in the Folding@Home arena and then realized I could be making money doing the same type of work.  It was a no brainer to switch from Folding@Home to Bitcoin.

I've since made several thousands of dollars and am still going strong.

A friend of mine told me about it back in 2010. I followed it and mined for a bit, but then the crash of 2011 happened and I lost interest. My friend and I were thinking about putting $50 into bitcoins just to see what would happen once it dropped down to $3, but we never followed through. We're kicking ourselves now, that's for damn sure.

I have a friend who is bitcoin mining, on a 5850 back in August of 2012. I was Nvidia all the way and did not care for bitcoin mining at the time, but when he bought 2 5970 to mine and sold the 5850 to me and I did nothing with it for about 3 months but in January 2013 I decided to try it out. now I have about 8.6 GH/s mining in my house.

long-time lurker, first-time poster. About a year ago or so ago, I saw more and more pictures of people holding up signs with btc addresses. *cough* r/girlsgonewild . After seeing how quickly people were picking it up, taking an interest and becoming evangelists, it just made a lot of sense to dive in and learn how to swim.

Heh, 4chan's /g/ board introduced Bitcoin to me. I really didn't care for it when it was posted until the great crash a couple of months back or so (distant memory). Reddit also improved my knowledge about Bitcoin and the other alternatives, especially Litecoin.

A lot of what brought me to Bitcoin was the lack of a coherent argument against their plausibility as a transactional currency. A lot of folks have written editorials arguing for the dim prospects for Bitcoin; none of which have been compelling. On the other hand, there is a powerful narrative for why Bitcoin will prosper.

had to do an in depth project on digital cash, we made our own currency using a few algorithms (secret sharing, blind signatures, bit commitment, rsa, and random oracle) but because it was a small implementation we had it centalized. learned a lot about crypto, and bitcoin in the process. after i saw how useful it was, i had to jump on board

Hello,

I am sure I heard of this a few years ago, if only I had filled my bedroom with computers and GPU's back then.

Today I am a software developer who took a trading course and cashed in big on a demo trading account with bitcoins.  After googling bitcoins and then trying to mine at home I quickly realised my hardware was next to useless.

So I have made an executive decision and invested around 4k in Butterfly labs hardware.  I sincerely hope it gets delivered in time to at least make back my investment costs.

I decided to buy a few devices as the worry is the difficulty will increase too quickly rendering a single device useless.

I have been told my device will be in the data centre in a couple of months, I will report back when it becomes available.

thanks

Andrew

When BitCoin found me, I was knee deep with 35 open tabs, I clicked on a shinny B coin link, and was struck with gold fever. After a week of researching I realized, I was a year or more too late to mine. The economics, being anonymous, a world currency, mining money while you sleep, technology. BitCoin encompasses everything.
