Title: Limit Signature by Lines instead of Characters?
Post by: Reikoku on June 22, 2011, 05:35:59 PM
One thing that I like on this forum is the variety of things which I can offer and purchase from people via the market area. As you can see from my signature, I'm a bit of a Jack-of-all-Trades, offering mining contracts, shell scripts and currency exchanges.

My main issue is that despite my signature being fairly small (two lines on a decent resolution screen) I can't expand it, meanwhile some people's signatures are far larger (screen real-estate wise) but within the limits.

I think that on a forum, the best measure of a reasonable signature is vertical pixels, not characters, so I'd like to propose limiting the signature to say four or five line rather than by number of characters. In my opinion, this would be better for traders like myself, and would better limit the actual imposing signatures (those few with large images or a lot of lines).

Would like to know what other people think.

I'm not sure if that is possible to achieve with SMF, but I agree, it would be a better route to go.

Sorry.  :P

Anyway, one way to get more sig real estate is to exchange your full bitcoin address with your firstbits address (Maybe write "FirstBits: 1kwc1p").  Or put the firstbits beneath your avatar as your custom text, though that seems to go unnoticed more often than that.

3 lines, smaller (non-modifiable) type size, no images.

I tend not to mind images when they're the 20-30px high 'banner' images like SgtSpike has, but some images can be pretty obnoxious.

2 lines, same font (non-modifiable), no images.

My vote:
2 lines, standard forum font size, image up to 30 px tall, non animated.

I wish there was an option to disable images in signatures (I thought SMF had it, but it's just a general disable signatures), since most images are annoying, especially that Goxed one. It's always nice to see small text signatures, though, since it's a good way to promote bitcoin related sites.

I've seen some forums that don't have a limit for how many characters you can use or how big images can be in the sig, they instead automaticly add scrollbars when the sig is over N pixels or N percent of window size.

Btw, if possible, perhaps it would be nice to be able to "mute" individual sigs and avatars without stopping showing them all  nor completly ignoring users.

I'm going to go ahead and change my image signatures to text.  Hopefully you guys appreciate it!

I just went to see the option today as well…
Currently I hide them on a per case basis with ad block.
