Title: Xeon Phi currently supported miner?
Post by: zebrax0r on August 24, 2017, 04:59:56 AM
Hi there.

I've chanced by about 12 * Xeon Phi 5xxx series PCI-E cards. My memory of them was that they were relatively capable on certain hashes. I noted several years ago somebody mining Monero and some other cryptonight variations with these cards quite successfully.

I am interested to know if there are any currently developed applications supporting Phi? I'm currently using xmr-stak-cpu and was hoping it had support for Phi, or might be extended?

Thank you.

z

The x1xx series does not have AVX-512 support, from what I can tell.  That hampers its crypto-crunching ability, from what I can tell.  I would love to be proved wrong!

The x2xx series does have support for AVX-512, so XMR may be interesting, but it is their current offering, so I'm guessing is cost prohibitive.

I reached out to a dev about a year ago, because I really wanted to buy a x1xx series card.  I actually got a response, but it was along the lines of "buzz off, nobody is going to waste their time optimizing for that architecture".

My thoughts.... Unless it magically hashes like mad with no tweaks, you're going to be S.O.L., unless you can optimize the software on your own.

If you're interested in collaborating,  PM me.  I have a soft spot in my heart for Phi, especially the x2xx variety.

So what cards exactly did you pick up?

You can try this Xeon Phi x200 miner for Nexus Earth. There exists a version for AVX512 capable CPUs as well.

- This is apparently the ONLY miner for PHI's also there are few variants of phi, such as SOCKETED and ADD ON CARD. The addon card is usually comes in passive cooling versions and are designed for rackmount server cases with adequate cooling capabilities. If you will decide to use it in regular environment, you will need a custom blower fan - those are sold on ebay. It is also recommended to use linux instead of windows and not all linux distros are seeing phi's. Lukes blog is best source AFAIK in regards Phi's. In windows you will have to figure out the way to properly install it and utilize it, as it will be seen as NETWORK CARD.
