Title: Tip: PSU cables from different manufacturers are DIFFERENT!
Post by: yeti_alchemist on May 21, 2013, 02:43:51 AM
Crap!

I wasn't paying attention when attaching an SATA power cable to the Corsair PSU and grabbed one that came with the Seasonic PSU.
Apart from wire color they look alike: Corsair are all black, Seasonic are multi-colored.

Unfortunately they are pinned differently and so I did some barbecuing when I powered on the machine.

One SATA cable smoked (literally).
One 32GB SSD HD is dead as far as I can tell.
Motherboard seems OK so far.

Oh well.
It isn't a party unless something is broken.

Yikes.  :(   I remember studying the cables I had laying around because I was afraid of this.  I lost track of which cables went to which PSU and spent a few minutes with a meter before using them.  :(   RIP, little SSD.  It probably took 12v to the face.
