Title: Ethos or windows?
Post by: bdog1234 on August 25, 2017, 04:58:19 AM
I am building my first miners. Ordered the parts today for two 6 GPU gtx 1070 rigs.

What is my best option on the software side? With windows I would need to buy two copies right which is not cheap. EthOS at $39 seems attractive.

I have not messed with Linux in nearly 15 years but in the late 90's early 2000's I was a system administrator for about a dozen Linux and Unix machines so they don't scare me but I am rusty as heck. Last version I think I used of Linux was Red Hat 8.0.

Windows has better GUI overclocking tools and miner support, but smOS, which is based on Ubuntu, is getting better Nvidia support. At only $2 per rig a month, it would be a good option to try. You only need a 16GB flash drive to run it and the only change you make is to add your email addreess to the config file in the root of the flash drive. Then you just boot off the flash drive and it automatically detects all your cards and starts mining. Every other configuration like miners, pools and overclocking is made through the web UI. Very easy and straightforward to use. BBT did a video tonight on a 6 card 1060 build running on smOS that can give you an idea on getting it going. There are also lots of video walkthroughs on setting it up from start to finish on Youtube from BBT and others.

Windows 10 runs fine without a key unless you need it to look pretty.

You can get a Windows 10 license for $10-$25 depending on where you get it from.

I bought 2 off an ebay seller that has sold hundreds, both activated and no issues.

nvOC
I second that because nvOC works great and it's for free
Windows has limitation - 8 GPU so if you'll decide to scale up each rig
for example up to 13 GPU, you have to go with Linux (nvOC) anyway

btw You will save few hundred dollars if you build just one 12 GPU rig
with ASRock H110 Pro BTC+
