Title: 3x Casascius 25BTC Physical Bitcoins For Sale! ***MISPRINTS***
Post by: Coinfish on May 21, 2013, 03:04:21 PM
Hi, not sure if this is the right board for this (if not, my apologies to the mods, feel free to move), but I might be going through a serious transition shortly and may need a lot of FRNs. I have four 25BTC Casascius physical bitcoins that I might be looking to exchange for fiat.

What are people willing to pay for these? I've looked on ebay and haven't ever even seen 25s for sale, and I saw some of the 1BTC misprints going for multiples of their face value in the past.

Hard to say. Do they have the Series 1 hologram with "Casacius" misspelling?  If not, they won't go for more than 26.5, which is what Casascius is charging right now on his website, shipped.  I wouldn't go by what websites are charging, as most of those are grossly overpriced and fishing for suckers.

I'm not sure if they're misspellings or not. I have them stored in another state, and I'm making arrangements to pick them up shortly, so I can let you know then. I definitely bought them in 2011, but I thought only the 1BTC coins were misprints.

No, there are misprints all across the 2011 range.  Here is a recent auction to give you a ballpark:

Looks like DM90 maybe got 33 BTC for his, not clear from the thread as the posts are all his.  In any case, PM me if they have the series 1 misprint and maybe I'll make an offer.

Cool, I didn't know that. I'll let you guys know if any of them are misprints after I've picked them up!

I actually decided not to sell it (someone won an auction on ebay for $4000 but I decided not to sell it even after that), and am still keeping it. Pretty sure it goes for a lot more and will just hold onto it as part of my collection.

I believe Coblee is selling one for 35 btc, but I'm not sure if he has sold it yet or not.

Unfortunately fake physical coins are extremely popular right now, they are all over localbitcoin and on the darknet for usually 40% of face value. I wouldn't buy any of them knowing they could easily be fake, I don't know what the coins are made of or anything but there is probably a way to tell for sure.

Seriously? Unfortunately I knew it would only be a matter of time until somebody started making fakes. I'm sure they're using the firstbits of actual coins, too, so no luck there. Casascius should put a serial number on each coin-thats truly the only way to protect from counterfeit.

In localbitcoins can you buy physical bitcoins?? Are you sure? Because I think this is not possible or rare to find them there. So you should not buy them there.
BTW If you buy them to a good rep seller you will have no problem.

An actual casascius coin has the phrase CASASCIUS encircling the entire coin, in tiny letters, on the hologram. You can only see them with a microscope, or if you have reaaaaaally great eyes and catch it in the light right.  It's quite beautiful, really.

I'm sure it is just as counterfeitable as the rest, but there's at least a chance that the production quality of the counterfeits isn't up to snuff and they skimped on this aspect.  Something to keep in mind, anyway.

Honestly, I have seen 2 So far. BOTH ordered from darknet by a close friend (Why would you even be going there to buy those anyway?) Specifically S.R., in Fact. Crap seller with no feedback, I told him not to do it.
Both looked like trash, looks like it was made in China on the floor of a basement. He wasn't even mad they were so cheap, he should of known. I would compare it to the fake gameboys they make and market it the same or the fake Iphone's and MP3 players that look nothing like the original , they even name it something different like 'GameMaster' or 'WeeU", blatant and fake.

Fact is, I don't know what this kid is talking about. There not popular, there not going around. In fact they are ridiculously easy to spot. Mike C. has done an excellent job creating these, and I cannot wait for more to come!!

If he in fact has one that is fake and looks identical. Please, Pics or it didn't happen. For now everything is OKAY.

NOTE: Deal with coins daily, never came across one fake myself.

How would a serial number be any more trustworthy than the firstbits?  Someone could put a matching serial number on a coin just as easily as they could put matching firstbits on a coin.

Hello, sorry for the delay, it took my longer than anticipated to obtain my coins (they were in a VERY safe place :) )

Of the four 25BTC coins, all four are misprints (assuming 'Casacius' on the hologram indicates a misspelling). I also have three 1BTC coins (which I forgot I had even purchased lol ) of which two are misprints.

I'm going to keep one of each, so as of now, I have three 25BTC misprints and one 1BTC misprint for sale. You will find pictures of the coins below. I am willing to take any steps necessary to ensure potential buyers of their authenticity, and will require escrow of a mutually agreed upon third party in the event a transaction is made.

Pictures will be uploaded shortly :)

Bump.

I'm going to have to cash these in one way or another pretty soon. I'd much rather sell them to a Bitcoin enthusiast and preserve their numismatic value, but I'll end up having to rip open the hologram and redeem them if no one bites :(

Please don't make me destroy these pieces of Bitcoin history!

The clock is ticking.....

Thanks for your offer :) I might end up accepting BTC, but I'd rather not, as I'll end up having to pay a cut to mtGox to convert to USD. I started the account verification process there yesterday so I'll have that option available as a last resort.

I suppose I'll welcome offers in both USD and BTC and I'll look into the trading fees and whatnot and figure out what the highest bid is that way when the time comes.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. It is a well known fact that a large portion of the coins issued in 2011 had misspelled holograms saying "CASACIUS" instead of "CASASCIUS". They are sought-after collectibles.

Hardly surprising considering they are much more rare.

Anyway, you should stop repeating yourself. You warned everybody enough. Anything more is just spamming. :)

I mean honestly I have 6 of these if anyone wants to buy them for 20 BTC then I'll give them to you in a heartbeat. If you haven't been on these dark markets, you have no idea how common fakes of these coins are. There is no difference between them and genuine ones until you go to redeem it and you get nothing.

I just caution people to not throw up 3 grand until they know what they are getting.

<OT>flavius, I haven't heard about such good counterfeits yet. Would you mind sharing some more info, like where did you bought them? And more importantly, post some high quality pictures of the coin and the hologram? This topic looks to be a good place for it: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=227808.0</OT>

@Iron

Send me a PM if you'd like, and we can work something out. :) For any serious buyers, I have records of my purchases from memorydealers.com back in 2011. Obviously I'm not going to post them in the thread as they have personal information on them, but I'll be glad to show them to any serious buyers.

@Flavius sorry to hear about your fake coins  :D
