Looks like Metropolis is now split into two separate releases: 'Byzantium' and 'Constantinople':

> Development has steadily continued over the last month and a half as we approach the launch of Metropolis. Over a series of core dev calls over the last few months, we have specified and finalized the EIPs for Metropolis, and made the appropriate changes to the Yellow Paper. Metropolis has now been split up into two consecutive forks, named “Byzantium” and “Constantinople”. EIPs for Byzantium (Metropolis part one) are essentially finalized, and the last remaining work to be done has to do with writing tests and making sure that all clients are passing all tests.

Tons of detail on the ethereum blog, but no good round-up yet:
* https://blog.ethereum.org/2017/08/23/roundup-5/

To be clear, these "hard forks" will not result in any new currencies as it's expected all clients will switch over to the upgraded chain, unlike the BCC situation.

On deeper reading, looks like the main casualty of splitting Metropolis is the account abstraction / privacy features – should bode well for zcash / monero in the near future.

Lots of discussion on GitHub:

I still do not understand about the metropolis. But whatever it is, if for a better etherium change, I will support it.
I will try to understand and find the latest info about the metropolis.

Of course it will be. One of the Ethereum marketing department standards is that we make changes as convoluted as possible. It's a perpetual and not-so-subtle form of smoke and mirrors.

Wasn't Casper (PoS) slated for late 2017 (i.e. now) or early 2018? Now there are going to be two separate hard fork releases first? Sounds like they are scrambling to me... Casper always occurred to me as too ambitious and likely to be vaporware.

That's easy to say when you have Vitalik and the ETH foundation coordinating with the handful of major mining pools. Not so easy in Bitcoin...

Is Ethereum going to fork like Bitcoin and give a coin of Metropolis for each coin of Ethereum that we have?

Seems to me an interesting question. Aside from that, any exact date or even month and week for this hardfork? Or is this final already or just another issue to spread some kind of FUD? And what are those wallets of exchanges that support this?

I am also willing to see it. Ethereum is my main investment. But I don't want to see a fork like BCC and BTC.

It's very unlikely that either of the Metropolis forks will lead to a new currency; unlike BCC vs BTC or ETH vs ETC, these changes to the tech are not contentious – it's expected the entire network will adopt them without a hiccup.

No exact date yet AFAIK, lots of delays with Casper etc. and they are still hedging their bets (repeatedly referring to it as 'research' as opposed to production work). However there is a fair amount of transparency with the discussions happening in public so as an investor I'd rather see the team take their time and ship something robust and well-tested.

we must be careful in metropolis city because it is very dangerous for the weak so we should not be careless and have to be careful.

Ethereum is becoming more and more perfect, better to buy some. With BCC  and B** come out, BTC will loose its place, ETH will take up it.

That's a bummer.  I think Metropolis is going to be great.  It's got a sweet name too!

I heard that Metropolis will not be the final Ethereum upgrade. The fourth hard fork, known as Serenity, is anticipated to introduce major changes as well. Still, the team has not yet announced the date for the next upgrade.
