Title: Rig issues, please help!
Post by: Cryptominer91 on August 27, 2017, 04:12:50 PM
Hi!

Apoligies for the long post but Ive been having some issues with my rig and cant seem to figure out the issue. Any help would be much appreciated.

About a month ago I purchased a 6 GPU Ether mining rig (parts listed below). I've been encountering a problem where the rig continues to shut down after running for 72+ hours when running with all 6 cards.

Initially I was under the impression that the power supply was the problem. Originally we had a 700w PSU supplying power to the Motherboard and 4 GPUs and a 500w PSU supplying power to the other 2 GPUs. We figured the computer was shutting down because of power supply issues so we bought another PSU and hooked up 3 GPUS to each 700w PSU. It ran stable for a few days but we encountered the same issue.

Next, I figured the motherboard was not capable of handling 6 GPUs so I took off the 6th card and ran with 5 for about a week. Claymore kind of froze after running for 72 hours but I just needed to refresh the mining pool (the rig remained on and didn't shut down which I thought was a good sign).

About 96 hours after refreshing the pool the rig completely shut down. By "completely shut down" I mean that all of the cards stopped running and the display stopped working but the motherboard still seemed to be on and the CPU fan was still running. Why would this be the case?

When the rig shut off when running for about a week with 5 GPUs that kind of threw out my theory that the motherboard couldn't handle running with 6 GPUs for more than a few days.

The only other issue I could think of is that maybe it is because the cards are overheating? A few of the RX 480s are running at around 90° which I thought was quite high but I read on some of the forums that this is not unusual for these cards and shouldn't be much of an issue.

I'm kind of at a loss for where to go from here and how to debug. Is it possible that the MoBo is just shot? Maybe it is because the cards are running extremely hot and shut down after a few days? Or is there another possibility that I haven't thought of?

Thanks for taking the time to read through this. Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!

This probably belongs in the Alt. section, not Bitcoin section.

are you running this thing headless? As in no monitor connected to it and using VNC or something to get into it?

I've got a 6 card 1060 ETH rig that initially needed a lot of hands on babysitting. It would stop mining but stay powered up but because I've got no monitor connected to it I couldnt tell what was wrong, couldnt get in via VNC either. I added a DVI headless adapter to one of the cards and its been running perfect since.

What OS are you using?

What is your OS on the rig?
