Well, it's like Bitcoin is the main cryptocoin, but there are thousands of other coins wich are altcoins.
Alternative to Bitcoin coins.
Some are good, most are bad.
Some are almost exact copies of Bitcoin and others bring totaly different uses or technologies.
Like ether and smart contracts.

You should just think of it as "any coin which is not Bitcoin"

You can find them all here: www.coinmarketcap.com

Bitcoin is open source code so everyone can create from it another coin. There were created a lot of hundreds of those, allmost all just for speculation (some even just for make a joke) and many of them are just bump and dump scam schemes. The majority of them are death but there are hundreds still active right now and people keeps creating more and more with diferent reasons.

There are some (very very few) legit altcoins though, like the ethereum project which intendeed to offer much more things than bitcoins.

Well, altcoins actually give higher returns. Yes, BitCoin did give the highest return in history, but that's over and at $4000, for it to give x2 ROI you need it to go to $8000 and that's hard. There are plenty of alts that will give you much more than x2. I'll tell you what I believe in.
Verge - Anonymity coin - Currently about $0.003.
Civic - Identification platform, can be used in place of Passport or ID  - Currently about $0.5.
ADX - Advertisements exchange - Currently $1.4.
TenX - Bringing crypto to the real world, debit cards in production - Currently about $3.6.
DeepOnion - Securing the TOR network - Currently close to $2.

NOTE: There are a lot of people that will tell you that 99% of altcoins are scam. This is not true. Most of them have a project. There are those that are scam, but they're usually easy to recognize and you can look for threads in this forum on them.
