Title: GTX 1070 Base or OC Edition?
Post by: kryptoknightk on August 30, 2017, 06:41:37 AM
Is it really worth it to pay extra for the OC edition when you can OC it yourself with something like MSI Afterburner? Or can you OC the OC Edition on top of it?

Someone throw some knowledge at this. Thank you!

I don't think it matters.
OC Edition only gives you a higher base clock for your core.
You're gonna push it up anyway so just get the cheaper one.

PS: Different memory types (Hynix, micron, samsung) would affect on some algorithms like ethash and Cryptonite but since you won't know what type is the card using until you get it, I guess it wouldn't matter also.

You should look at the cooling performance and the fan quality. This might save you issues in the future.

Yep 3 fans definitely cooling better
and OC ver. runs more stable when overclocked

It seems a GPU chip lottery.
I've GTX1070 Gigabyte WF (Not OC) that gives 470 sol/s at 140W with stable settings core/mem/voltage: 1900/4400/900 and
GTX1070 Gigabyte Extreme Gaming (Strong OC) that gives the same 470sol/s but at 150W with stable core/mem/voltage: 1970/4500/950

Ive found a stability difference on my two regular gtx1060's (yes i know this is for 1070's) compared to my three OC versions. OC ones can clock higher and be more stable.

The higher "overclock" versions tend to have better cooling solutions - the Aorus line is a specific case in point.

The only GOOD point to the reference-type and FE-type blower cards is in a closed case where they tend to exhaust most of the hot air OUTSIDE of the case - but some well-designed fan-type cards can argue the point, like the "no video connector at all" Sapphire Nitro-based "mining" cards.

OC editions tend to give you higher clock and power consumption... weigh haow much you are paying sometimes you can get great deal with OC editions!

Nor when you do not forget about the cooling, when overclocking your chips can burn.
Install more fans, with a larger diameter.

I have ASUS 1070 DUAL both the normal and OC edition, and I regret buying the OC edition.
Strangely enough for me, when I overclock with afterburner the normal edition can be pushed to get me 30MH/s on ethereum without any problem, where the OC edition the maximum i could get is 28, If I overclock any higher it'll give me display errors and causes the system to crash/be unstable.
Lesson learned: don't buy the OC, you pay extra for less to equal performance.

Definitely not worth to pay extra. Buy some decent card with big cooler lime MSI or Asus

from my experience

founder edition versions literally sucks

if you know how to reduce power limit and tune fine the oc, the results are much better with oc versions (rog, gamerock, gaming x, windforce...) because even with 27º room temperature, they run at 62º but founder edition runs at 82º with much lower oc

I can upload pics

for me it's a must buy oc versions because they have much better cooling solution, better phases, better materials, higher oc stability...
