Okay, so people have been spelling hold wrong on purpose saying hodl and it is diving me nuts! I don't know why people are doing it other than the fact that some guy posted something and didn't correct his spelling mistake. I guess a couple people thought it was funny and joked about it, but that was a long time ago. Honestly, I never found it that amusing to begin with. It is the same as when people in the poker community were saying "I had trips". It was so irking.

I guess I will probably have to end up suffering the hodl cult for many years down the road. I wonder if some of the people posting "hodl" even know where it came from or if they are just mindlessly following the hodl cult.

Perhaps this thread could possibly upset some of you, but this day was coming and you knew it. You knew it hodl cult. You knew. You all thought you could get away with this terrible grammatical error and no one would stand up and fight.


So for the rest of you who have secretly crept in the Bitcoin shadows and hated the hodl cult. This is your chance. Your chance to come out and fight. And when you fight, don't do it for your gold, land, or your own materialistic gain. Do it for your brothers and sisters in the Bitcoin community. As a single unit we may be weak, but as an army we are unstoppable! Who's with me! Huh?! Who's with me! Let us end this once and for all!

This is the internet, Bitcoin is a part of if, and I guess you know what memes are why people use them right?!
If you don't like it than just ignore it, but you can't stop that. Memes are a part of the Bitcoin community and it's history.
Same as for instance "halvening" or also "rekt" in the crypto trading community.

Hodl is too strong now to be stopped. You can complain about it as much as you want, but hold is now a meme too strong to be erased. I think it has done a positive thing, and that is to spread the long term holding strategy rather than constantly checking the price to see where you dump for some beer bucks.

People are so addicted to instant gratification (specially young people) but thanks to hodl, now the culture of the long term effort is being taken into account.

Hodling beats trading 95% of the time, so the hodl meme will never die.

Why is it bothering you,in every community there is always a bunch of signature phrases that community use,hodl is one of them
Just let it be,let our signature phrase to be known to others so we have our own uniqueness

Personally, I prefer HODLing fiat (https://www.reddit.com/r/actualmoney/comments/5w26dj/its_tumble_weeds_here_so_im_just_gonna_go_ahead/).  It's better because you don't have to worry about it going down in value - it just does it steadily all the time!

Seriously though, I agree.  The HODL thing has become annoying.  I agree with not panic selling, but the whole "hold forever and never actually spend your coins" thing is just plain stupid.

Still, it was a pretty funny thread.

Yes HODling is usefull for FIAT but it depends on the size of the HOD !

Here is a picture of a traditional HOD for carrying bricks, you can see that instead of bricks you
could carry or HOLD FIAT in them also But it would be completely useless for Crypto currencies.

Yes hold gas got termed as hodl. This is because of the technical term creation by users who initially misspell and follow which gets used by few others. When this gets followed by more and more users this will be termed to be correct. Holding is always the best to profit, based on the growth experienced till date.

Well... People want to be seen as being cool. If 95% of people is doing something it is viewed as being cool.

Thats like the opposite of the logic. If someone is cool he should have his own rules and have nothing to do with rules of majority.

But its so common in this culture that its cool to not be cool, because the word cool is out of the rules now. It had even changed the name. I don't know how one say now that he/she is cool. I have lost track of it.

Its self contradictory culture of hipocrites, bitcoin community is not free of it.

Eh, why are you so annoyed by it. As far as I know it was first just a typo made by a person and then people hear started purposely mistyping it and according to some people it has a full form of 'Hold on for dear life'.
Its just a word, a typo, a way of expressing the obsession for holding. You should just forget about it, I don't get it why you getting so angry over it.

Hodling Bitcoin and a lot of other Crypto's works.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
At some point you have to dis-hodl though.

Why you are judging his spelling on the off chance that you are judging his slip-ups then judge yourself also on the grounds that individuals are giving thought however they have no information in nowadays yet there thoughts are very best and great extraordinary to post. So we ought not pass judgment on there learning. Take a gander at the world there are many people groups so for what reason would we judge somebody?

I have to be honest, and I guess show I'm a newbie, but I thought HODL stood for 'hold on for dear life'.   LOL   when i first heard that i thought it was hilarious.  now, it's even funnier knowing it was just a misspelling this whole time   haha

This is one of the greatest memes ever. And guess what: it's ours. Noone can take it from us, and yes, we're proud of it. If I could, I'd even elect HODL as president.

I think there is no problem with using that word. In any business field there are always terms/slang used. It is our part to be updated and familiarize these terms. Even if it is mispelled, we cant change it anymore since it has been widely used and has already caused a big impact in this crypto world.

He didn't spell it wrong though.

Hodling is the art of holding Bitcoins through good and bad on a journey to the celestial body which serves as a natural sattelite to earth that we call the moon.

When I first learned hold is misspelled as hodl, I laughed at loud.

nobody can't stop the hodl hype as well as nobody can't stopt the whole crypto hype  ;D

I agree with the hodl thing driving me crazy.  It is right up there with "To the Moon".  And just as a side note another one that drives me crazy is someone saying "I'll reach out to you", instead of "I will call you back".
