Actually the current giveaway was referred to here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=201770.0 Cut-off was 9th May. And see the note about developers. There may be still some time for you to register then, if you are a dev. ;) Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? But yeah just one of the many benefits of Bitcoin talk forums Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? And this one is not even for bitcointalk.org accounts, it's for people who joined an email list. Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? This is purely a for-profit endeavor and they have paid for their publicity using big-time interests it looks like. Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? And its not open source. And they've kept most for themselves. And its a get-rich-quick scheme. And they've resorted to slimy, but somewhat effective marketing. Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? Post by: BitCsByBit on May 24, 2013, 03:33:37 AM I want some as well :)
Newbie count... Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? Post by: Quicker_777 on May 25, 2013, 05:32:53 AM All right, here's the deal: I do not believe Ripple is a good idea. It seems like it doesn't add value at all - the usage of a "coin" in fact is not necessary to do what they do - they are only adding value by saying they can convert to local fiat, as far as I can tell... why do they need a coin to do that? I guess that is one approach, but I have a feeling that other "approaches" didn't really get their day in the sun, because it is more profitable in the short term to mint a crypto-coin, right?
Right. Anyway, I wasn't in on the slimy marketing campaign, and I want to get some Ripple in the short term. Does anybody know a valid transaction rate from BTC to Ripple before I make a fool of myself? ??? Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? Post by: Quicker_777 on May 25, 2013, 06:23:35 AM Forget it. Ripple just died. Wow - very short life span, and probably good riddance:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=212490.0 I'll admit I only understand a fraction of the crypto-talk on this, but I think the community will at least own this project in a true open-source fashion. Title: Re: anybody else registering only for ripple giveaway? Post by: scintill on May 25, 2013, 06:30:38 AM the usage of a "coin" in fact is not necessary to do what they do The XRP coin is how you pay transaction fees. Fees are used to protect the network from spam/denial-of-service transactions (source (https://ripple.com/wiki/XRP).) I suppose using a single, dedicated currency for fees is useful so that the network doesn't have to set a fee in every type of currency transacted. I admit I still have a lot to learn about Ripple and haven't thought about things like this in great depth, but the above sounds like a fairly good justification for the existence of XRP to me.
