You take as much salt as you like, and you weigh it. I don't think the number of salt crystals you have matters. :P

The mention of salt crystals was for comparison of features.

In any case, a line of tables where people are exchanging Bitcoins for salt and salt for items and Bitcoins for items might send a message to machine.
In fact what might even be better is 25g units that CPU miners could use.
I think it's time to push the machine, make them a little uneasy.

I'm looking for both portability and value of the portion, but I'm open to ranges. As a functional form of protest to the system, one week every two months peg that to BTC and leave fiat in the dust.

I want to give bitcoin a countercurrency of sorts. Whenever the market is weird we use the salt to stabilize. But in the beginning as a means of functional protest it just screams win.

I'm very intrigued by this pink stuff.

It perfectly seasons your food while it cooks it. Also, even the thinest cuts of beef come out pink in the center, but not raw. Some restaurants use them as plates and leave a pile of raw meat in the center and everybody cooks their own meal at their table. Fun for parties. I have absolutely no wholesale connections with this product though. So you'd have to find a source.

Long term it can be. It would allow people to move between barter and liquid trade that does not make them dependent on poisoned central bank currency.
Short term it is a powerful meme that builds communities. A catalyst.
