Title: PCI-E x1 to PCI-E x16 does it works ?
Post by: Ilocans on May 24, 2013, 02:46:40 AM
Hello,

I need some advice because I bought this item http://www.ebay.ca/itm/400456107681?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 and my Radeon 5770 does not work after installing ATI drivers.
I was wondering if there anything to do or if it only works with powered risers or anything else ? I have 2 PCI 1x slot on my motherboard and I would like to use them to mine.

Thanks for your help,

Bought it on eBay 3$ each. I as wondering if my power supply is not powerful enough that may be the problem?

You should get powered risers especially for x1 to x16.

Don't want your mobo catching on fire and burning your house down.

Bullshit, just choose a proper mobo. Running 4 cards on unpowered risers on a 990FXA-GD65. You need one with power supply next to the PCI-e slots.

You run 4 OC'd 7970's without powered risers and your house is going to burn down.

Don't be a retard. It's only like $3 extra for the powered risers anyways.

Ive looked everywhere, The cheapest powered risers are $17 after shipping. The non-powered ones are $5 after shipping. That's $68 for 4x powered risers.

If you know where they are only $3 more than the non-powered ones please send me a link, ill buy 8 of them right now. :D

Just make your own powered risers from a non powered one. You only need a piece of wire and a molex connector. O put it together while drunk in about 15 mins. really easy.

I just followed the instructions on this thread > https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=76121.0

I couldn't get any 1x pcie to 16x pcie risers in the uk from anywhere cheap so just got the 1x to 1x riser and did the melt end with soldering iron trick so that you can fit it to a 16x card.

Works a treat!

I dont see why do you need powered risers. there are quad gaming systems that require 1600Watts of power, they use the same PCIE express slots. No extra power from those slots is required. as long as you have decent PSU and Mobo you shouldn't need any extra powered shitty risers. Just make sure that you plug the power plug next to the PCIE slots.

Powered risers are used for cards that dont have extra 6 or 8 pin power cables.

And in that case you should not even be using that PSU lol.

Listen kid, I specifically said it's no problem IF you get a mobo which has an extra power connector on the boards next to the PCI-e slots - like the 990FXA-GD65. I'm running three rights with 4 OC'd 7970's in them for two weeks full throttle and no single connector even got lukewarm.

The topic you quote was some dude using a non-powered motherboard on top of a piece of wood - now that's asking for trouble. He was just being really really dumb.

I have been thinking of doing that, but have been a bit unsure if it was "plug and play"

I have read that at least earlier cards had to have a pin shorted to be able to use a 1x->1x riser. Is this no longer the case?

I am not sure if it was earlier cards, or different motherboards which need the pin shorted. I am using an asus P8Z68-V motherboard which is about a year old now. I didn't have to short any pins. Also i an using a gigabyte 7950 on the 1x to 1x slot.

either way, i think the pin short trick is fairly safe if you do it properly and not as scary/dodgy as it seems :)

It will work just fine for BTC mining, just bump the pci-e speed a little in bios to get little bit more bandwidth to share between all the cards.
