Title: Question about motherboard positioning ( in a crate )
Post by: N1CKH0LAS on May 24, 2013, 08:41:01 AM
Hey,
I've seen some people chose the easy and cheap solution of putting the components into a plastic crate. I'm planning to do the same, but there's one detail missing: what do you put under the motherboard, in case you place it at the bottom of the crate ? I mean, should there be any gap between the bottom of the crate and the motherboard in order to avoid overheating or any physical damage or you just place it at the bottom of the plastic crate and that's it ?
Thanks in advance for answers and suggestions.

I'm in the process of building one in a milk crate.

I picked up a bunch of paint stir sticks from the same store that I got the milk crate (ace hardware) and a yard stick. Total cost for everything $8

I already had zip ties but a bag of zipties goes for about $5

I ziptied the paint stir sticks to the bottom for some extra clearance for the mobo, I spaced them about one paint stir stick width apart from one another.

I then took the yard stick and broke it so that I could double up the support for the back of the cards and zip tied that to the crate.

I plan to zip tie the mobo to the bottom of the crate so it doesn't move around.

My last build was on a bench case by diypc. It works but the cards don't breath as well as I had hoped even with them on riser cables laying on their side.

If this next build works well I will transfer the rig on the bench case into a crate. It looks like the crate I got could hold 4-5 cards.

Crate rig here also. I got some small plastic baskets bout an inch high from the dollar store.
put them 2 of them in the bottom of the crate, upside down,  ziptied in place, md on top.

Works great

does the mobo have to be that high off the bottom of the crate? The one I got already has the mobo about 2 inches off the ground because of the bottom of the crate. The botom squares have depth.

It doesn't have to be. Those are just the shortest I could find.
I put the hard drive under ! of them.

I built a rig in a plastic crate a months ago and its running great. I attached little rubber feet to the bottom of the crate so the motherboard could sit on those.

Something like these:

But you can also find them at Lowes or Home Depot.
