Any ideas on how to spot a bitcoin scam?

There is one extremely straightforward rule - if it looks too good to be true then it is.

On top of that always google site:bitcointalk.org 'subject' and see if anything comes up. If nothing at all comes then that's not an encouraging sign.

Risk free returns are impossible. If there was a legitimate interest paying Bitcoin option I can guarantee you every single Bitcoin on Earth would pile into it instantly as they're all sat doing nothing. There is literally not one on the entire planet.

Lending on well known exchanges has enough risk, let alone all these bullshit ponzis. Have you been offered a specific 'opportunity'?

i agree if its good to be true better stay away from it usually its ponzi or hype you can also check if the site is in badbitcoin.org

This is literally the best piece of advice out there, not just specific to a Bitcoin scam but scams in general. Ask yourself what would they get out of giving you a crazy deal and why would they not just manipulate the deal for themselves? Why do they need you? etc.

And on top of that ask yourself this - if a stranger in the street with a bag on their head walked up to you and offered to double your dollars in one month and all you had to do was hand them 1000 dollars in cash right now with no contact details and no idea who they were, would you hand it over and let them walk away?

99.9% of people would tell said stranger to get fucked, yet for some reason they're all too happy to do this online with their Bitcoin. Why?

The basic rule that works everywhere, also in BTC of course, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Basically, any website/individual that promises you to double your earnings by giving him money is a scam.
There is no such thing as Bitcoin Doubler, or online Bitcoin miner, the list can go on and on.

You could also use ScamAdvisor, it can give a quite accurate result on most websites, even those scam Ponzis'.

It is a skill, you must learn how. There is no other way regardless of what anybody else posts. Do not listen to websites, do your own research and learn the skills. A magician 🎩 does not get scammed, they are skilled scammers in reality. Hope this helps.

Search for reviews, don't invest large amounts unless you are sure. You can ask for bitcoin signed messages as well.

OP what kind if scam are u cautious of? If it's the simple sale of goods or servives, then use a trusted escrow ( transaction intermediary) and only release your funds when your receive what you pay for. There are tons of scams around, you can heads over to the goods and service section of the forum to get a feel. It also helps to hve a conversation with both the seller and buyers, just to find out what the experiences were like.

Actually you will know the traits of a scammer, usually they are:

•They are offering a task and they said they're going to pay you an high amount or you're going to invest and after a month you will get triple of what you've invested.
•Usually they will force you to invest and ofcourse they will gonna run away.

This is the thing I look and if it's present i now starting to:

1. Search on the internet about the site.
2. Find someone who tried it usually i searched here in the forum or find some reviews about the site here.

Don't spend your bitcoin without thinking and the internet internet is a very dangerous place you don't know who's behind the site and what are their purposes.

I also do not really understand about it, usually there are some people attack the thread of a project and say a scam but at the end ico project was successful. this is really very confusing, now I'm very hard to believe to anyone who says anything about a scam

To spot a  bitcoin scam, take caution and  observe the underlisted
when you can not verify the website and  link attaching an individual to an organizarion
when the project whithepaper  is not clearly written in terms of the objectives.
when the  income to be earn quite outway the  job done you must always ensure you verify before getting involve in any form of investment.

Read the the white paper

* Contains something like refer or invitation system, possibly scam
* Wouldn't work without the bitcoin part in the real life, possibly scam too
* Copy of other projects, scam

in my opinion to see in bitcoin is a scam or not, we can start from following an ico project :
- if the reward offered is big enough I think you should be wary of a scam.
- less reliable developers.
- description for the official website of the elusive ico project.
- rules created to follow the ico project are too difficult and unnatural, this can also be indicated that the ico project is a scam.

Scams are often extremely hard to spot. I have got scammed before, and almost another time even with using escrow. Thankfully it was only $12 or so... not too much.  :-\

Here are some ways to spot scams

*Malware downloads - Bitcoin is often used as "bait" to get you to download some nasty software that will mess up your computer.

*Bitcoin phishing impersonators - Impersonators run rampant on social media, and impersonating the bitcoin brand itself is a tactic that can be used to gain a victim’s trust and credibility.

*Bitcoin-flipping scams - These scams could be an offer to instantly exchange bitcoins for money after paying an initial startup fee or a promise to double your initial investment overnight.

*Bitcoin pyramid schemes - These scams are harder to recognize than the more egregious bitcoin-flipping examples described above, but the end result is the same; the scammer eventually makes off with the victim’s stolen bitcoins.

it's easy, if it's too good to be true then stay away from it. If it offers high return with little investment, it is definitely a scam. Best thing to do is always check the website for credibility. There's google to do that.

On a personal note, related to the ponzi side of the scams. There are very few countries in the world offering a savings interest rate of 10% per year. If you see an offer that's willing to pay you more than 10% it's almost guaranteed to be a scam. There's just no investment in the world that can create enough reliable income for someone to make money off your investment AND pay you 10% (or more). Some of these ponzis are offering percentage points per day...it sounds so great and it's quite literally so impossible.

You mean to say how to spot a program which is using Bitcoin as its mode of payment or transfer of funds if it is a scam or not. When a program is promising something that is already beyond the normal lines then there is a possibility that the program is just a scam or can be a scam later. Though of course, there can be some rare exemption here because lately Bitcoin trading programs are really making good money...in case of trading make sure that the program is really into Bitcoin trading and this where it is very difficult to determine if it is or not. One thing I sway away from are programs promising fixed returns because that is really impossible for a program not to collapsed later especially if the fixed rate is quite high. Go for a trading program that will share no specific rate and will only distribute earnings according to what they earned in trading.

The whole internet is a great resource to make your due diligence. Look for complaints of scams as well as good testimonials of those who found success in the program. Right now, there are good programs which are backriding on the success of cryptocurrency but always be careful. Programs like revenue sharing, matrix system and anything that has hints of just another ponzi schemes must be avoided at all cost.

Always remember this, If it's too good to be true, then it is not true. Lots of scammers will guarantee you a %profit by just doing nothing. This is very inviting and there are still lots people fell for it. A true investment and business should be done by hardwork and that you have to do something in order to grow your profit or business. You also have to make your own calculation if it is possible or not. If it sounds unreal, then just believe that it's not real after all.

It is easy to spot a bitcoin scam. If the site that offering bitcoin is too good to be true then it is clear that it is a scam because there is no site that will offer a huge return in just a short period of time. I believe that it is better to earn bitcoin in a slowly but surely process rather than betting and risking to those kind of scam sites.

You can usually already spot a scam by looking at their website.
If it's just a generic template with some generic info, I would already be very wary.

Especially if they make big promises of profit on their website, it's usually too good to be true.

how do you recognize a scam just like that? You can be mistaken, because now many scammers are making good websites but they are scamming people. the most effective way to recognize a project or website is a scam or not is to look at the team's track record, if necessary you search on google.

I just avoid hyip and mlm just scams you do not have that profit but you're the bitcoin. so the bitcoin chops the background because of their schemes. if you do not want to scam you trade or gamble you lucky man go to be a millionaire. you just know that you will be dealing with bitcoins with different schemes if you have known that a long bitcoin holder will first check or check on badbitcoinaddress.com if you just search google.

Just even on common sense you would able to identify which is legit and which is not but when we are still a newbie chances of getting scammed is high since we do still lack on knowledge into things around us but as early as we can we should really be knowledgeable already and good for you that you did ask that question into this community which you can really able to listen or read on whats the community been advicing here and as being said if all things are too good to be true then most likely of them are scam.Dont get blinded by good offers on a short period of time.

About investments, usually all HYIPS always turns out being scam. At first they will give what they promise and after collecting funds, they will run. Since I started on back at 2015, all those MLM schemes(example is MMM global), HYIPS(that promises a lifetime 3% profits per day), and even mining sites that runs for years like hashOcean (that o tried, luckily i got my ROI and earned some profits in it before they vanished) runs! Now not a single site among them is left. So always put them aside when you are planning to invest guys. Instead, put your btc on ICO's that are really prepared and never rushes their goals and trade on established altcoins.

Also google 'coin name scam'. If other people are having problems with that coin, they will have written about it and it should come up when you google.

Scams related to bitcoin can be easily identified, because majority of the scams promote services providing profits in multiples in a days time or two for the investment amount. It's easy to find out that this is a scam or not. First give a big return on our investments just after a few days. It is called Ponzi, Hyip (High Yield Investment Program).

Even companies that are in the industry can also make a fool. Because nothing lasts for bitcoins invest in the end it will still steal our hard earned money.

There is no real a technical way for us to know if some offers about Bitcoin is a scam or not. It is just a matter of our decision and knowledge. And it is true that we always need to be suspicious on the program or project that could probably a scam and could be a result for our loss in terms of bitcoin.

1) Do a background check
2) If something says you its too good to be true, most likely it is
3) Are you feeling the hype?
4) Are huge profits guaranteed?

If you find yourself with a potential for huge profit but the underlying scheme is opaque, you're about to be scammed.

One good reason, China had to block ICO's, it's a fertile ground for scams.

Chinese investors will not let themselves out for the trendy way now how to have bunch of money. Maybe when they find out how to detect a scam ICO, they might back in business real soon.

Google doesn't tell you if a project is scam. You need to first make sure the team members have real linkedin profiles known publicly. So that you can trust them. And you need to investigate their background.

And white paper is also vital. It should be original without plagiarism.

To be honest it is not easy,
I was sending ETH to an ICO but I didnt click to send it as my working colleagues ask me and we had dicsussion about job,
when I got back to send for ICO suddenly I read something on this forum that an ICO which I was palnning to invest probably a scam,
I didnt have a ny idea about it.
I was so lucky at that time.

well, one thing is bitcoin banks promising you to return 200% of your initial investment in a short period of time. That would be a very good clue that this institution or individual is just getting bitcoins and when he reaches the certain amount he needs, he suddenly disappears with your bitcoins. Be careful of that scheme.

Yes if the certain institution of fake ones offer a 200% return on short time period of your investment then it can be called scam since the decent legal company gives only few percentage in returns of our invest so we should make this as shady as hell and need to avoided with.

I have never personally, used sebastianJu, but a few of my friends have said favourable things about him. There are also escrow bots on the internet. A few are Bitify and Escrow.com.

The next thing is to what out for any “dodgy” or misleading activity by the user, during the trade. If such suspicious activity does occur abort the trade or insist for a trusted escrow.

The rules for spotting a scam remain the same, whether or not it involves Bitcoin. Like many posters here share, the general guiding principle should be "if it's too good to be true, it probably is".

"Best performing asset class!" "10x returns in less than two years!" "Will reach $1 million in 10 years!"

So a lot of context should be built up first. And a lot of misconceptions cleared up before taking a look at Bitcoin. Bitcoin isn't a magic gold mine. The riches of the early adopters are not similar to that of pyramid schemes. Learn to differentiate between potential and guarantee. Treat the hyperbole as educated guesses on potential, see the guarantees of returns as scams.

I tend to agree with you, however:

- even UBER and other "real life" deals are offering referrel systems.
- A disruptive, very inovative project on the blockchain would probably not work without the bitcoin part
- After you see some succefull business you tend to have "similar" projects. Litcoin is a copy of bitcoin and it is not a scam.

However to the average guy, with less knowlegde your advice is good, and could keep people away from dirty scammers.

One of the things I use to consider if something is a scam is think about where the profit comes from. If the site/investment profit to pay you cannot be explained, then it is probably a scam.

Also the longevity of the site. If it has been around for a good time, it is less likely for it to be a scam.

do you own research about the team/project and founders.. additionally check the whitepaper, designs, social medias and do a thorough research before putting your money at risk

If you want known a scammer. I just say. Dont trust anyone on internet. always use escrow. Check their feedback carefully. Everything can be fake. Hard to believe anyone in this crypto world

well escrows are great and proven useful but you can't use them all the time, it differs per situation for example in a cloud mining site, first they won't use some kind of escrows

Try to make some research about their team on linkedin. it is very useful. Secondly, look at the forum. Forum is best place where people discuss about ICOs and other things. I think that the number of scammers sitting in the market is even greater than the number of actual traders. You need to be very much active at the time of buying and selling your Bitcoins. You need to go for reliable websites instead of dealing with an individual about which you know nothing.

search first the site im sure they say in the site that they pay you but if the site having a minimun deposit like that i think dont invest in that site because you dont have assurance in profit many of site here dont have minimum deposit to withdraw the earning coming from there site like eobot cloud mining they gave free doge a day to make your hash up but not fast earnings you have to wait

For me those things about scamming using bitcoin is not a new story since other anonymous persons viewed it as an easy way of doing such unrighteous ways on how to victimized using digital currency. All we needed to do here is, we should be vigilant and don't easily get fooled of some any investment offers that involved a collection of money as part of the so called business partnership. If you see this scheme to be familiar like that, well I tell you one of that tactics is a ponzi scheme that eventually scams people in a long run.

Bitcoin is information secure so it hard to spot and scammer with only their address , so i suggest you to use escrow for safe in trade or exchange with some strangers . If they don't want to use escrow with you , trust me, my experience said 95% that's a scammer. Scammer doesn't like escrow or middle man.

Bitcoin scam has all kinds of similarity. First of course, if it is too good to be true. Better stay away. If it promise to give you back this huge amount with this hort amount of time. No one is doing that unless it is a gamble and you've got all the luck.

You have to do your own research. There is nothing that is going to outright say that this is a scam with this is not. Obviously one of them for things like open source software, a development a proven track record, and at least a little bit of history on the team. However that does not mean that one thing is a scam and what is not. Closely and wisely examine every project and make sure you dont invest in ponzi scheme.

When it appears too good to be true

Perhaps the best thing is to do research on your own, whether it come from forum or website. Maybe its too good too be true, but if it still has logical plan on how to execute the plan, then i guess trying a bit doesn't hurt, but i do stay away from promising ideas, because too much promises might hurt if it doesn't came true  ;D

there is a point that you can not get money easily if you have any wonder that because there is no easy money in the world you are playing or even in bitcoin also...

It is so simple. Anything that will give a huge unreasonable amount after a few period, is a scam and will do your heart a huge harm than good. Run away from HYIPs, MLMs, Doublers, Triplers, etc. If you want to loose money, it is better you put little in trading and learn the basics. It is better to loose learning than to loose gullibly out of greed.

Yes we cannot get money easily or grow it in the short period of time but there are also people who are victim in this scheme and they didn't know what is the real system were we need to wait for it that's why it is very important to give knowledge for them so that they avoid it and make money through hardworking.

In my opinion, usually bitcoin scams/scammers offer large amount of returns or rewards so that the investors can get tempted and not  hesitate in making the payment.

All offers online which are too good to be true are most likely scams and the ones who victimized on this one are those people who are greedy and do like easy money.They do easily lure out into the hands of scammers since those people do saw that this is the common weakness of people when it comes to easy money.This is why there are lots of people being scammed because of their hopes of getting quick rich without exerting too much effort which is not possible on this bitcoin world.We should really need to work hard and put time on it.Research and self awareness would really avoid you on this kind of things.

It is the basic way for people to know if something would result for a scam. Because all the thing that promises easy money and a more faster way for you to earn with used of crypto-currency that in the time of technology is just fast enough for us to earn, we also need to think if it is legit and a good way for us to earn. What do you mean by bitcoin scam? Are you talking about investments that accept bitcoin? I think the rules are the same for any other investment, if they are offering to much return then you should probably get suspicious. Try to get to know the team, try to see if what they are proposing makes any sense, and try to get help from other users. Also, if it is something very new, get very cautious. If it is something legit then you should be ok in waiting a while before investing, because if their business is solid, then they should be around for a while.

One it promises things that is not likely to happen at all. Fake sites and fake evidence of existence etc. And not to mention dumbness and stupidity of people who believe in such superstitious stuffs. It would be better if you do a enhanced due diligence of your own so that you would know whether or not it's really a scam. Be careful out there chaps, people will stab right when you need em.

I agree unless they can see the future  no one can gurantee a large amount of interest or profit. Some sites will offer you 1 bitcoin a day if you invest 0.01 bitcoin. There is no way they could earn that bitcoin in a day.

Better is would be if they are well-known of the fact that there is no short way of earning money. Hundreds of the people have been victimized, especially the newbies, with all this stuff.

Much have been roamed in the market and many people just believe, due to less knowledge, that shorter period can make them rich. So be wise in your actions.

it's easy to tell the difference between fraud and the real form of investing with Bitcoin.
if the site offers a profit of 10-20 fold then it is a fraud as does Multi level marketing or ponzi and such.
Their original investment did not offer a big advantage. team and its official website.

As an user of this forum for years now and as an experienced bitcoin user, I have noticed that it is pretty obvious to claim any 1 post account opening a thread with a link is automatically a scam of sorts trying to steal your bitcoin.

So a good cautionary advice is to never open links in here coming from new accounts, and also remember to activate noscript (Unfortunately the new captcha system requires js on, but you can turn it off after the captcha is filled)

Most of these scams are.obvious from the beginning. Its just that sometimes, it seems to good an opportunity to let pass. And most scams actually make people earn money at the start just to lure you and others to it

Do you mean about the hyip or cloud mining? There are many kind of bitcoin scam if you can see it you will recognize that fast when it comes in hyip that offers big comeback of your money, You can't even get back your ROI there. Imo its better to do tradings than investing your money for nothing.

Scam is scam! HYIPS offering a certain huge percentage return on investment in a short while, or those promising investors of doubling their currencies etc. There is no other name for it. The most important thing is for anyone to stay away from anything that is unrealistic, and even it sounds realistic, it is still good to find out first and make some due diligence before putting funds into such investment.

The best way to stop being scam by a scammer is to stop be greedy. I have lose money to scammer before and I know how bad it is especially when someone use a system like bitcoin to scam you! I have decided to only put my bitcoin in something worthwhile and never to be tempted by the bogus return being promise by most bitcoin investments returned by scammers. I think the thing we need to be telling people is to stop being greedy and get to work cause that is the only way you can make good amount of money. I see people who fall for this sort of scams as lazy and they are just finding every quick means to have cash without working for it.

It works no where and even in the normal world, there is nothing one can do to invest 0.01btc and get 1btc back that same day. There is no shortcut to success.

It's really easy nowadays unbelievable offers i saw online in india a group of people were trying to selling btc at the 60% of the market rate sad part people even fell for it luckily it was told that they have been arrested but this is one way of scamming.
Another way which is really famous mining if you see ico rock mining it looks like a pure scam people are still investing but the chances of it to be successful seems really less or other mining scams are get 10% daily and other bs like roi in 3 months.

It is EASY to spot a scam.

1. It is too good to be freaking true.
2. If it gets a huge amount of money from you and promises to DOUBLE or TRIPLE the amount in an 'X' time, which in this case is a very short time.


There is no easy money in bitcoin, unless it is a field of gambling. Everything has a risks and takes time and effort to earn. Free moneys are just for airdrops nowadays.  ;D

Really hard to spot a Bitcoin scam. Bitcoin is anymorous so who can not figure out who really is behind that wallet address.
