Title: [POLL] Newbie Jail
Post by: Bluemoss1 on May 25, 2013, 12:30:22 AM
I Just got released from newbie jail after waiting over 5 hours (I was not logged in at one point), constantly refreshing the page and reading new topics, and exploring the other sections.
Personally, I think the newbie jail is a good weapon against spammers, griefers and bots, but it is a little over kill at 4 hours long.
What do you think?

What do you mean by "Newbie Jail"?

I'm sure they had good reasons. It's a common thing for forums.

Newbie Jail is the time when you just register and you are only allowed to post in the "newbie" section until you have made 5 posts and have been logged in for 4 hours.

Yes, but does it have to be 4 hours long?

The four hours is to show that you have interest in contributing to the community. Most loan scammers don't have much interest in doing so, so four hours kinda shows you do.

It also helps in reducing the flood of questions that have already been answered a dozen times.

Completely agree - it's good to section off users with such a time limit in order to encourage them to read, read, read.

It should be longer. This feature helps prevent spam.

You can post only in Newbie section if you have Newbie status

I think newbie jail is a ridiculous duct taped solution to a problem that could be handled through reputation and a trust network (like Ripple's design for example). Effectively banning people on criteria as shallow as how much time they have to post pointless threads is one of the most ludicrous concepts I've ever seen. There are many good ways to fight spammers and scammers, and this isn't even in the top 10.

For people who want to simplify the process, there is a website called http://newbiejail.org that will help you get out of jail. I don't speak for the site, but I am starting to like what it's trying to accomplish (which seems to be getting the lazy admins off their piles and piles of donated coins to actually upgrade the forum).
