Title: Selling Bitcoins on EBay?
Post by: cardcomm on May 25, 2013, 01:52:13 AM
Anyone have any comments on the perils and/or benefits of selling Bitcoins on Ebay? Obviously it seems like there is a significant profit there. But I assume there are lots of problems with chargebacks.

Anyone have experiences they are willing to share?

No offense, but I think you'd be better selling BitCoins on a BitCoin centered website [This forum for example]. You just seem to have a 10% chance of not getting scammed when selling on sites/forums like this.

Just saying, I'm not trying to offend anybody.

Just my opinion, I guess.

The fees have gotten outrageous ~13-15% that's why I stopped selling stuff there. Sell here or on an exchange.

Yeah the whole selling an irreversible item/service such as Bitcoin for a completely reversible method of payment like they use on eBay is just asking to be ripped off!

The point I'm making though is that when you use eBay to sell something like Bitcoin, you're putting yourself at massive risk of chargeback fraud.

Yeah, I agree. Yet there are continually vendors on eBay selling bitcoins. Some of them have quite a history. They must have either found ways to prevent chargeback fraud, or at least to mitigate it. I believe some of them attempt to mitigate the risk by shipping the customer written confirmation of the transaction.

Again, I'm not saying it's a good idea. I realize it's fraught with peril. Yet some apparently do it successfully. I guess I'm looking for the angle here... LOL

I agree.   once a bitcoin is gone, it is gone.  Most people have to overcharge now on ebay to pay the fees anyway.  Not good forum for buyers and sellers other than the massive "habitual" browsing and bookmarks that keep feeding that dying beast.

Couldn't you mail someone a print out QR code charged with the amount of bitcoins they bought?

Auction winner receives tangible item. If logic serves there should be no reason for winner to open a dispute.

plenty of scammers on there that will charge back or people sometimes change their mind.

Yes there are. But just because they try a chargeback would not guarantee ebay/paypal would decide in their favor. If the seller can prove somehow that he delivered what the customer ordered, then he keeps the money.

I'm sure disputes and chargebacks happen when selling digital media on ebay...
