You can check that information in the below coinmarketcap link. Since, Ethereum has been introduced eth is being top and next to the bitcoin in market capital. Even in growth wise also eth has grown continuously. Other coins simply fluctuate all the times.

Keep in mind that coinmarketcap lists coins by market, but many of those in the top10 right now are losing ground quickly to some newer coins and might not be there in a short time... so sorting top10 by market cap right now is a mistake in my opinion

PoS seems a bit tough at the moment, in my opinion, especially those kinds of coins like 1337. I spent a lot of time collecting and staking, and when I look back I might have earned more if I focused just on collecting Bitcoin or even DOGE faucets haha. But yes the idea is tempting always because of "everyone can mine" concept.

Agreed, definately also watch the coin history on the website.

Sometimes they get pumped 50-1000% in one day, thats a good sign of a pump that is not sustainable usually.

Coinmarketcap is a great website but even there you can see different lists of coins depending on what you are interested in. The first and main list is related to market capitalization, but you can also sort coins by price, number of coins or volume. The last option might be a big use for traders. I think it's one of the most important things to know whether the coin you plan to trade is traded by others.

If you want 10 top coins, you have to split between stable coins and young coins that can grow so much in the future.

Stable and well-known coins:
Btc - Eth - Stratis - Shift - Decred

Young but very promising and explosive coins:

Deep Onion - Rads - Ixledger - Mne - Xrb

I would recommend coinmarketcap, it's an extremely good source of current, past and future  prices and exchanged, full of info and references. Almost every coin i know is listed on that site, extremely good help from them, check them out! I have them pinned in firefox to check for DeepOnion prices :D

They had some rough time but are now solving the problems.

There are many alt coin now , but if you want to know the stable and profitable coin this are the few , first is BTC , ETH , Litecoin  , Waves , MGO , Dogecoin, Neo , Monero , Ripple and Dash.

Don't base your investment into altcoins on the top 10, nor the top 20 of coinmarketcap. The amount of hot air surrounding these projects is unreal.

They spend more $$$ on marketing and hyping than they do developing.

You need to invest in the dark horses, the ones that don't hype with cut and past protocols. Do research. Read Forums. Don't trust the so called experts on here. Most people on here are in it for themselves! PUMP PUMP PUMP! Then you're left holding a bag of dust.

The issue with the top ten, is where do you set the limit.. top three would be easier, as ETH hits the roof in such a question..

Although bitcoin cash is high in market cap, after the upcoming changes in November for the Bitcoin, and if successful, I believe we could see a fall for bitcoin cash.. so I would not include it in my list..

But XRP for sure! top alt coin, supported by those who would want to see it successful, is basically the oldest practice in the book. Follow the money.

Dash is here to stay.

Monero will be under a lot of fire.

Neo will continue to represent China.

Litecoin and ethereum classic will have their role to play.. small, but som.

As for the rest, we just have to wait and see..

If you are newbie I will think you invest one of top 10 coins( btc eth etc nem...) in coinmarketcap...and you should research btc and alt coins for more understanding cleaning...by  You can  accses forum btc ex this forum , I advise you to invest XEM coin because it is high pontential in the future

if you want to know a list of all coins, you can visit coinmarketcap.com like many of us suggested. but if you wan to know more about altcoin and about the details, i think you can visit for each of website of the coins or you can visit in their thread and read their project. we only know what happen now and in the past but we can not know what will happen in future. with reading their project, you will know what they want with their project and you can invest in the coins.

for the top 10 altcoin list, i am suggesting to invest in btc, eth, etc, zec, ltc, neo, omg, bts, lsk, xrp.

In Coinmarketcup website you can find everything, but I would suggest to look in just Top 3 or Top 5 altcoins, because there are too many of them. When you will be more experienced, you can start to look in Top 10 altcoins, but it will take time to understand altcoin market. Currently ETH looks good and also Ripple.  ;D

The top 10 is very subjective. If you wanna go by marketcap (i dont think it truly shows the best 10 coins though), check CoinMarketCap - in my opinion some of the coins in the top10 there are very overpriced and a few are very shady - i wouldn't invest in them (ripple and NEM for example).

There is nothing better than the con listed in coinmarketcap, this question is very much and there is no satisfactory answer. everyone has a different opinion.

If you're looking for historical information then you can use coinmarketcap.com and wikipedia. But if you want to know which one to invest in or trade, there would be a lot of things to consider since a coins profiting value is highly dependent on speculation and the ever changing market. CoinData a  paid facility but that’s because it is the absolute and  best source d trades on cryptocurrencies.

as many mentioned above, coinmarketcap is a good place to go if you are interested in the ranking, what i want to say is that the rank was not invariable, many new coins have the potential to be top ten, and we should pay more attention to them

i think putting NEO in the list is the right choice, they are currently experiencing an upward trend, i think you can get a short profit in the near term if you want to buy NEO now, or DGB is also a good coin, this coin including the old coin but still can survive and still have the potential to have a high price
