Title: Bitcoin-qt - encrypted my wallet, now I can't get in Post by: Schern on May 26, 2013, 06:23:12 PM Hello, very much a noob to this and am having issues already. I setup my bitcoin-qt wallet and have successfully used it for a couple of transactions. Having tested the principle with a very small BC transfer I thought I'd encrypt it and start using it properly. However I'm now trying to transfer the bitcoins out and I can't get it to recognise my pass phrase. I know exactly what I selected but cannot get it to work so obviously I've miss-typed it. I've read some other posts about brute forcing it on here but the scripts seem to have been written for bitcoind rather than bitcoin-qt. Can anyone help? It's only for a small amount of bitcoins so I can't offer a big reward but it's just so frustrating having only just started using them! Thanks in advance!

But if it's just about getting it working again you could backup your wallet then delete the data folder (on Win 7 that's per default C:\Users\your suer name here\AppdData\Roaming\Bitcoin). Bitcoin will create a new wallet then, which will work but of course has no acces to the BTC tied to your old wallet. I'm sure the method for cracking bitcoind wallets will work on bitcoin-qt. I'd recommend using something like electrum instead of bitcoin-qt, it seems to be much easier to use. I might come across as a rude troll for saying, but seriously, if people have a hard time using and securing a bitcoin-qt wallet properly they should reconsider getting involved with BTC at this point in time and wait until it is prepared for unsuspecting, unknowing consumers. Ah that was not pointed at the OP. More at people complaining bitcoin-qt would be hard to use or even confusing. Mistyping a password can happen anytime for any reason. This is why you ususally see a verify pasphrase field, when asked for a passphrase. That admittedly is a shortcoming of bitcoin-qt's UI that should be changed. Next time I use an long password for something I think I'll have to copy and paste something and then stash the doc with it in away somewhere just in case!
