Title: Geforce 480 on a old asus A8NSLI
Post by: a.denis1 on May 27, 2013, 03:34:05 PM
Hi all,
I have an older Pc with a motherboard asus A8N-SLI deluxe working with a xfx Geforce 8800 . My Idea is to replace the graphic card with a "newer" Geforce 480 asus engtx480 . If I replace the graphic card the system does not boot . I don't understand if it is a problem of the nexus 400w psu , the idle consumption of the 480 should be enough low .
Anyone have an idea?
Thanks , Denis.

The Power supply is too low and the motherboard chipset is probably too old to support a GTX 480.

What operating system?

Processor?

***************Procedure (regardless)***************

First, download all the new nVidia drivers for the new card, while your system is running. Put it in a folder you know how to find.

Uninstall all old nVidia drivers first, while the system is running, shut down, then put the new card in it.

Reboot, and install the new drivers.

I have the next generation ASUS board after that, the M4N-SLI deluxe, and I have upgraded graphics cards many times.

The above procedure always works.

The processor is an amd but it seem not a software problem because the Pc does not boot , when I power on it make the classic "beep beep ..." , it seem an hardware problem

Probably the power supply is too low if I work with the GTX 480 but in idle the system require about 150 watt before buying a new psu I want to be sure the motherboard can work .
How can I understand if the chipset is too old?
Thank you AzureEngineer

Your power supply is too old.

400W for a GTX480 is would be asking for trouble even if it did work.

I don't see how your chipset can be to old as long as it uses a PCI Express 16 Slot.
