If you have good net speed and want to use it for regular use, download bitcoin-qt
For more security : Armory
Lightweight: Electrum/Multibit or online wallets.

I like running the classic Bitcoin - Wallet.  It is fast enough for my needs and functions as infrastructure for the bitcoin network by staying connected to ~8 other user's computers.  Its great for people who can dedicate a machine for a single purpose and leav it on 24/7. :-)

MOD EDIT:
See https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=218040.0 as this site is probably a scam

I wouldnt make a digital wallet, you can be never sure that your computer is clean. I made a PaperWallet at www.bitcoin-address.org and printed the paper wallet. This is the best method to secure bitcoins.

I would use QT for my first wallet, just know you have to be very patient while it syncs to the network for the first time :)

I have tried only electrum and bitcoin-qt.

Between those two i 'm choosing electrum.

Definitely check out Electrum if the thought of syncing gigabytes of transactions doesnt appeal to you.

I really like MultiBit,

It's only ~40mb with the blockchain downloaded. (It downloads a heavily stripped down version of the entire chain, and goes back for information on addresses it actually manages)
It doesn't rely on an external server to host the blockchain (like Electrum)

And it allows you to manage multiple wallet files so you can export only certain keys and use them on multiple devices (for petty cash on a phone, as an example. If you lose the phone, you already have the wallet open so you can move the coins out of it.)

I prefer Electrum on Linux, but I've encountered bugs. Nothing that stops me from using it. Whatever you choose, remember to Back Up!

If you want something basic just go with the simplest one (in my mind) Bitcoin-Qt

DO NOT USE THIS WEBSITE

If you have sent funds to an address provided by this service, transfer your BTC out before he does.

I use blockchain.  When logged in, you can access graphs of your account history, such as final balance or the number of transactions per day.

I personally use MultiBit as it's fast and small for my needs. But i'm in the process of still downloading the full blockchain with QT.

I'm using blockchain.info too. Does anyone know how to change the address that is shown in "wallet home"? I'd like to use a new address for every tx.

I personally have been trying a bunch and I've found that I do prefer an online service. But hey - I'm just a newbie.

If you have the space I recommend using Bitcoin-Qt.

Here's a question:

when using Bitcoin-Qt; are there still transaction fees involved when sending BTC?

As I understand it, you can avoid transaction fees with every bitcoin client or online wallet. They just might take a lot longer to confirm and 0.0005 BTC is really only about 0.05-0.07 $
