Title: Ugliest (but effective) GPU rig set-up
Post by: Philopolymath on September 17, 2017, 09:04:06 PM
Ah the good old days of GPU mining

I don't think it gets any uglier than this..but damn sure was well cooled and more than paid for the gear.
Anyone notice the chop stick keeping two R9-290x's apart?
The other outdoor rig is PC-7990+R9-290x+R9-270 with 1000w EVGA
Two indoor rigs are each 1 R9290x+2x R9270 on Corsair AXi860's
All four rigs together totalled 10-12 Mh/s and 3.5KW
I actually DID have OVERHEATING issues on the CPU of the AXi1200 rig.
I could not believe it !!! Impossible right? I finally did figure it out..
It was because the CPU LIQUID COOLER was freezing up and not circulating..So off it went and back to a plain old stock fan.
I must confess being so naive at that time I did not know there are these things called "RISERS" ...I had know idea you could use them..LOL!!!

Oh...the 80c GPU is of course the middle and 54c is left near PSU. Outdoor temp was about 13c

Aren't you afraid of rain or snow? Rain water is known to cause some serious damage to pcb.

Yeah they got caught in snow storms MANY times...I never had a short or board fail....I hung a tarp up to keep out the worst of it.

Ugly doesn't matter in mining; you won't be looking at the rig most of the time, and it doesn't pay to look good. All that matters is temps and stability, and you've got that. Some ducting could help keep the miners out of the rain and weather but still keep the air moving on the rigs.

If you can rig up some kind of canvas or tarp to keep rain/snow out it should be ok.... still somewhat of a risk if the wind blows your tarp off in a storm.  I'd look into enclosing that balcony if possible, some vinyl roofing might be an easy and fairly cheap solution to mostly enclose the balcony while still letting in light and some air movement.

A few sheets of this and some screws might do it.

Look at the date..that was more than 3 years ago...they have been dismantled..
But back then 10Mh was really ROCKING!
I run 8x Antminer S9's now...but these are the rigs that paid for themselves and the S9's..
The pics were on an old drive I just fired up to load the pics for old times sake.

ya it was quite ovbious when you mentioned the cards in there and i saw you were using Cgminer, damn, thats a oldie but a goodie man, thx for sharing :)
You decided to continue down the BTC route only? never got bigger badder GPUs over the years? i find Antminers hella unreliable and heaven forbid you need to RMA one :/

Happy Hashing! i used to have BTC ASICs too, but im all GPU now :)
