cgminer: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0

An easier alternative is bitminter which is the application for the bitminter mining pool

There are two major ones: Multibit (java-based) and Electrum (python-based). Both initialize in seconds or minutes.

There's more info in the alternative client subforum.

I'll stick with bitcoin-qt. It's the reference client and thus the most trustworthy in my view. The blockchain check takes a few minutes, but so what. I just boot it up and then go make me a tea. When I'm back it's ready to go.

Well Bitcoin-qt is the most trust-less system, you can have for bitcoins currently, in consumer wallets. The rest you have to trust servers and other people.
Not true! With Multibit you have your wallet exactly like with bitcoin-qt.
