Title: GPU power consumption
Post by: ORabbit on May 29, 2013, 06:27:13 PM
Hello.  I'm mining with a 7870 right now.  I'm getting about 440 Mhash/s and GPU-Z is telling me it's pulling ~80 watts.
This seems to be too low of a power draw to be accurate.  Or is it?  Any other utilities I should be using?  Aside from a Kill-A-Watt.

Yep.  0.7.1.  Does 80 watts seem plausible for ~440 Mhash/s?

It tell you your current TDP max and the percentage that is being used.

No software can measure how much you are pulling from the wall. Google your card TDP specs and add ~+20% if you overclocked it. After you will know how much electricity your card uses.

Kill-a-watts were on sale at lowes this week.

You should definitely get a kill-a-watt, mine was telling me for my 5870 I was getting 400 MHashes that peaked at 300 watts. It's also not just the GPU that consumes watts, there are lots of factors, power supply efficiency, background tasks on your computer, type of CPU, etc.

I didn't realize they were so cheap ~$20.  I'll grab one.  Thanks!

Mine doesnt even use that at 100% overclocked, mine use roughly 190 watts - 210. I am using a kill a watt

I haven't even noticed that gpu-z reports watts.
I ll go check it.
