Title: Around the World on 80 Bitcoins
Post by: BTCLuke on May 29, 2013, 08:13:37 PM
What a press extravaganza for bitcoin that would be if one of our brave young travellers decided to pull this off!

80 BTC is worth over $10k right now, so the airfare to get around the planet is certainly possible within that amount.

Food & Hotels shouldn't be an issue either if you're sticking to big cities and use Gyft at the time of purchase.

Bonus points if everything you take with you was bought in those 80 bitcoins too, from your clothes to your laptop/ipad/smartphone directly from a store that sells in bitcoin directly.

Who wants to go for a trip? For the press value alone I bet we could crowdfund this idea easily.

I will abandon the corrupt banking system and leave all fiat currency behind on the 1st of January in 2015, trying to survive only with bitcoins talking about it in every corner of the globe. I am planning to visit at least 75% of the states/nations that there are in the world (UNO counts 196 and Wiki says 209). Therefore it will be forbidden for me to exchange bitcoin into fiatcurrency by myself or a third party. I hope you understand that i will not travel to countries at war or the north or south pole. You might lose all your investments and i can't even promise that there will be any refund for what you fund. I will take videos and pictures on my journey for sure and would be willing to team up with a documentary team if you wish so, and constantly update my web page. I will enable a person to act as a killswitch if something happens to me so your Bitcoins will partially be refunded in case i die on my trip. - See more at:

But i guess more publicity will be on this project

Bitcoin is the future and we hope that future generations will grow up and be able to experience and live in financial indepedence. So we have to help our newborn daughter build her future based on that. If you fund us, to help raise her, we will name her Satoshi Bitcoin. This way she will be spreading the message of Bitcoin to the people her age everywhere in the world. She will be the first bitcoin baby and she will become a living preview of the upcoming future of generation alpha, as part of a big community. Future is here! Be a part of a new era! Thank you for funding our little satoshi :)

Give me the bitcoins and I'll gladly do it  ;D. Travelling the world on bitcoins is actually one of my goals, but I don't think the world is quite ready for it yet. Maybe in a couple of years when more hotels and airlines start accepting it or more random shops around the world do, but I think people would struggle to achieve it at the moment.

The hard part for a trip around the world like this is to do it now, because we are not quite ready for it. Thus get media attention and talk about bitcoin all over the world even in places they don't accept bitcoin. Else everybody could do it!

What happened to that documentary where a Newlywed couple travelled on I think their honeymoon entirely on bitcoins. I'm not sure if we're ready for worldwide travelling but It'd make a good story or another documentary.

it is hard to achieve that goal at the moment. You can find a way to do it and  ask the member in localbitcoin.com to pay for you when purchasing necessity. Or using the BTC ATM to get some fiat for emergency.

Travelling the world with just 80 bitcoins sure does sound very possible and something I myself also would love to try. I can imagine it would also be a lot of fun and knowing you also had possibly some spending money as well if you were able to make stops you could get a lot of souveniers as well.

crowdfunding DOES NOT work for lazy people who want others to pay for that persons vacation. crowdfunding works better for businesses and services that will actual have significant, constant and proper impact on the community. basically proper bitcoin infrastructure that bitcoin needs. not 1 individual person, but the whole community

So you think 1 individual travelling around the world talking about bitcoin and its potential, even in places internet is not an option and with the media attention this will get, will have less impact than businesses made for people that already use bitcoins? I think not! Bitcoin has a lot of potential and its revolutionary but we use it with conservative ways. Thats why crowdfunding does work. Use your imagination we need everything and everyone in this, even the couple that is willing to name their baby Satoshi Bitcoin imagine the publicity!

It is a nice idea, but it seems like 99.999999% of all the posts on this forum don't accomplish anything, nothing comes from what people suggest. This forum doesn't ever really seem to take action or have any kind of strategy or comprehensive plan for anything. It is just a forum where people come and dick around and talk about bitcoin.

I think there is some disillusionment over social media/forums, a lot of people believe that hashtags do things and that simply putting your wish to see something happen in a place where people see it will make it happen. There are so many ideas posted about "lets get bitcoin word out" it is not even funny. The issue is that it is just an idea until action is taken.

That'd be a great thing to do. I guess it would mean awesome and free PR for the person doing it and also Bitcoin in general. Isn't Seans Outpost doing something similar? They've got someone running through the US to make people aware of Seans Outpost and also Bitcoin!

This would basically be charity.

Crowdfunding is for people who are going to deliver.

The drop in BTC price has not been enormous, we're not talking about a drop of 100%.. besides on the long term bitcoin price is going up, no reason to sell.

I think the problem is not bitcoin price rather than bitcoin community that does not support bitcoin projects. Take a look to all crowdfunding sites bitcoin projects have no support. I wish i had more bitcoins i like a lot of projects, you have to give in order to take!

Of course, it's so full of scams who pretend to be legitimate businesses, how can you trust someone who would be risky even if in the regulated fiat world?

Trust is a big problem even in real life. So the big question is trust everybody until they prove they don't deserve it or trust nobody until they prove they deserve it? Personally i choose first option it makes me sleep calm. As far as it concerns this project i really like it and i would like to see it happen!

Actually, it's a quite silly "project".
"Gief me money, I'll travel the world" makes exactly zero sense.
Why should we chose the OP, as opposite to just anyone else, to do such a thing? If there's not a strong answer, then it's just a meaningless begging.
Does he have any special skill, knowledge, know-how, contacts, that would help him carrying it successfully?
I bet not.

The OP wasn't asking for any funds himself...he was merely stating that someone should do and we should try to crowdfund them. But for 80 Bitcoins I'd rather crowdfund a project for an amazing easy to use and mobile wallet or some service that makes it easier to use bitcoins in everyday purchases as I feel that would help bitcoin more than someone's trip.
