Title: Academic endeavor - FREE raffle for 0.1 BTC
Post by: Radivent on May 30, 2013, 02:04:28 AM
Ok folks, so I need to gain trust, I guess, and this seems like a good way to do it.  Enter a bitcoin address in reply, and a winner will be chosen after 23:00 US Eastern Standard time.  I want to make the system self-verifiable, so I am proposing this as a way for everyone to authenticate the winner.  However many replies have been made (with a bitcoin address by unique members), I will divide that number by 2, and drop any remainder.  I will then select the user whose reply corresponds to that number (remember, must be a unique member with a bitcoin address to qualify), and do a SHA-1 hash of the user's name.  If there are under 10 users, then I will select the first two numbers in the hash, and count responses sequentially (circling back to the beginning if the number is larger than the number of responses) to find the winner.  If there are under 100 users, then I will select the first three numbers in the hash, etc.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW: Reply with a bitcoin address for a chance to win 0.1 BTC.  All I ask in return is a positive trust rating when the winner confirms they were paid.

Only 36 minutes left to enter.  So far, if you enter, you would have a 50/50 chance at .1 btc

"Trust":
  • The winner gives you feedback - they'll put 0.0 in "risked BTC"
  • The winner adds you to their trust list - I wouldn't trust anyone who would do that
  • The winner says "gee thanks" - not a good indicator of trust

If it's #2, I will be making sure that nobody who trusts someone who trusts the winner is on my list.

Ouch, rough crowd.  I'm a newbie, dude.  Take it easy.  In theory at least 0.1 btc are at risk, and the winner could even leave me negative trust if I don't pay up.  What am I missing?

Just to be clear, once the forum clock strikes 3 AM, raffle is closed and winner is decided based on aforementioned methodology.

There's no money at risk at all. Also, the negative trust is not a risk either, because your account is so new that you can just throw it away.

Oh sure, feel free to give out money. That's welcome. It's the "I gave you 13 bucks so trust me plz" thing that has me worried.

Ok, eight entries.

8 / 2 = 4

Fourth entry was smarloc

SHA-1 of "smarloc" is 7b5e5e3f8f80ca256612477edf39f04693ba5553

First two digits are 75

75 mod 8 = 3

So the WINNER is: True___Blue.

Would anyone care to confirm or dispute, based on the original rules?  Assuming not, I will send money to True___Blue's address in 10 minutes.

so ppl who posted first / last basicly had a low chance of winning ?

75 mod 8 = 3 ? 75 divided by 8 ? didnt understand that one

Title: Re: Academic endeavor - FREE raffle for 0.1 BTC

I don't believe first/last have any higher chance than anyone else.  It was all random based on the hash of the selected user.  75 mod 8 just means the remainder when you divide 75 by 8.  75 / 8 = 9 with a remainder of 3.  So counting to the 75th user cyclically around the 8 entries, you end up on the third person.  Hope that helps.

All, I would greatly appreciate a trust indication from you indicating .1 btc at risk, identifying this thread.  I'm sorry to the old guy who is railing on me for being new.  BUT I AM NEW.  We're all just trying to get trust and out of newbie hell...

I was new once. I have no problem with new people.

Again, I'm "railing on" you because you are trying to "buy trust." That's not how it works.

Ok, money sent.  For those who think this is a scam of some sort, keep in mind that I just gave $13 worth of btc to True___Blue.

75mod8 = 3 but the possible outcomes are 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7

So since the result is 3 i think it is the 4th entry that should be rewarded.

smarloc that is.

But then again smarloc is an account that was created 4 mins after you posted the raffle
so it is possible that it is a second account of True___Blue.

Who knows  ;D

Sorry your raffle didn't go that well, I would have entered had I been at my computer before it ended. You used a pretty interesting method of determining the winner
