There are a lot of ppl who has sent money to the wrong address. But I curios, is there somebody who received payments by mistake? How much if yes?

This is not fair at all. Don't you thin it was scam? It just looks like this. What if that address of receiver belongs to the dev too or to his friend?)) BTW who in 21 century doesn't use copy-paste?!

I have a friend which do recieved funds which he didnt expect and as far as i remember it was 0.5 btc back in the past on where the price isnt too high as of now.I know  there are lots of people do have this kind of situation on recieving something from those people who do send amounts mistakenly.Well lucky for those people who do got some free blessings,its up to them if they would give it back or not.

Real or Fake his friend doesnt have any choice but to accept that he wont able to recieve any coins for his hard work.It isnt really fair at all and dev should paid it out because it was his own mistake and copy pasting address isnt really a hard thing to do.If he mistakenly send on someones address specially either on bounty or sigcamps then dev can anytime pm that user and do give it back those funds was being sent. Back to topic i have received some funds/bitcoins for about 0.03 in my wallet which is surprising where those money came  and im thankful for those free money that i do get from someone.

The probability of getting funds by mistake to own adress may be calculated from the algorithm, how bitcoin addresses are created and may lay at 1:2^160. The probability of sending BTC to any valid adress by typing the wrong characters even lays at 1: over 4 Billions. So I can't imagine, that we would find here many people, who got funds in that way except by copy paste errors.

I havent encountered this kind of situation. Receive payment by mistakes is something you cannot controlled and in this case I dont know how to track where the payment from. And yes it depends on a person if they will return it back.

Nah, I never. It is sad to know that there are many people receiving funds by mistake. Actually, I do lose my money due to many mistake. Well, I just wish that the manager will never make the mistake so that everyone can happily receive money

Indeed, the probability of a transfer going to an existing address are similar (or the same?) to the possibility of generating an address that already exists. Astronomically small.

None that I know of has ever received a payment by mistake, I'm sure the ones handling the distribution make it a point that they do not mistakenly sent it to someone else though, it might cause them to lose their jobs.

Nope, haven't heard of any. But damn! I would love to recieve some free cash! Hahhaha i mean who wouldn't want to? Lol. But i think it is pretty impossible to happen. Because not a lot of wallet are present today. And each are made to stand out from others. So I really don't think it can possibly happen. Well, unless if the sender makes a mistake in cooy pasting addresses, then that would be possible to happen.

what a question that is ! no i did not receive any payment by mistake .yes i also heard from many people who send money to wrong address . really who received money by mistake he is a very good luck man .

I also heard/ read that people gets coins by mistake some of them received big amount of coins.
But I never get .
When I heard about them I start thinking that one day I will receive more than 10 Bitcoin by mistake but it never happens from, ( still sometime think same from last 2 years)

I always send by mistake. Just today I sent double ether to my friend's address. It was nothing big something like $2 but it annoys me as hell that you can send payment by mistake.

For some reason I think people are stupid enough to create alot of new wallets after reading this thread in hope of increasing their chances to get some free btcs  ;D

my friend was suppose to send ETH to me for ICO I was on whitelist, but instead sent to EOS ICO.

Luckily he sent from his own wallet and not exchange so he can claim EOS.

That means they are lucky bee for the reason received the bitcoin fortunately, sadly I didn't receive any money incorrectly since I am being here in the forum for 2 years.
I believe most luckiest person is who got 10000 bitcoin for pizza at early stage in 2009.

I did receive a very small amount of Neo <0.01 and a few hundred Lumens on Bittrex out of no where. I'm not really sure how this happen, but it turned out to be a few bucks worth of crypto.

I bet most people wont really give those funds back considering that this is a free money and no one would able to find out on who are you or the holder of such address.Those transfers cant really be reversed this is why im careful on typing addresses when im paying someone so that it wont go on other wallets.

I have never experience that and the probability that it would happen is very low. That's why the wallet addresses are encrypted. It is for the reason to avoid these things from happening.

I received some "extra" funds from a campaign manager once due to accidentally putting in BTC0.1 instead of BTC0.01 and they immediately contacted me the next minute they committed it. I agreed to pay the remaining BTC0.09 back to them without arising any difficulties for them. All it takes is honesty to deal with such situations and it's all a matter of honesty and greed only because for many, money maybe important but for those like me, trust is priceless.

I've never recieved any payment by mistake instead I've made many mistakes when sending payment like I had sent BTC to wrong address later I realised that the copied address is wrong. Same thing like this was also happened, I sent ETH to an exchange instead of OMG but it was recovered and they charged small fees.

I always wondered that and my kid said that I should just create new addresses all the time and keep them empty in the wallets so that it increases the chances of having coins sent by mistake ::)

Due to this probability the person who received money by mistake can be called the chosen one :)) But if we want to calculate real probability we should multiply 1:2^160 for count of transaction at choosen period of time. If we take the whole period of existence (BTC, ETH, etc...) the probability of mistake would be much higher!

It seems like the odds of that happening are so infinitesimally small, due to the fact there are only so many valid addresses out there, and yet there's some incredible amount of potential addresses (something like 2^160), so you'd have such a small chance of that happening; you would probably have a better shot of winning the lottery while getting struck by lightning at the same time.

I'd rather spend my time digging in landfills trying to find old HDD's with BTC's.

I haven't and I probably never will. The chances of actually getting an accidental payment are so slim considering the fact that there are millions of addresses out there. But of course there's always that small chance of you getting lucky but I'm not really counting on that.

No, I haven't receive any payment because I am only a new member here in Bitcoin. But I think the possibility of sending payments are very high due to population of receivers and the percentage of the address's similarities.

I received 0.1 either ontop of the 0.01 i was owned or instead in a loan i gave out a while back, My address attached to my account got sent a really small amount as well which im not sure where it came from unless i did some campaign and cant remember =p

I once joined a ICO, and they payed me more than I should get. For example, I purchased 2000 tokens with 0.5 bitcoin and they actually delivered 4000 tokens to me by mistake, I assume. It happens.  :)

But the chance to receive a payment that is sent by mistake should be very little so I never think about something like that.

Only airdrop, receive payment by mistake is hard, due to a huge number of various addresses.

Trust is really prices and its much really worth than on not returning on those amounts which you know that it doesnt belong to you.Thinking off that those funds are urgently needed by its owner on some emergencies and you didnt give it back.I dont really like to feel that way and i agree on what you have said here.We should return all those funds but im sure there are really greedy people wont even bother to give it back.

I've been, but what happened to my case was a fraud scenario. yes many are using fraudulent investment schemes. and I was stuck in it. but not anymore. a little knowing and more experienced.

its just an honest mistake if ever that you will be rewarded as a payment and sad for those who will make this mistake as they cant no longer
get them back unless the receiver is really honest and will send it back to them.

yes once time that when i was opened my wallet i saw there is something wrong that i got the balance more than i expected but fortunately it was my friend did that mistakes and he asking to me to refund his bitcoin and immediately i was refund it because those bitcoin is not my right

I have not received neither have I send to someone and its because I try to e very careful on the address I am sending to when ever I want to send one and aside from the copy and pasting of address, I still go ahead and do high level review of whether the address pasted is actually the one copied  before I send and I guess that's what other people do too which account for why I have not received any payment by mistake or omission.

Actually I have never experienced it, because there are two kinds of mistakes, between beneficial and disadvantageous. but if it makes me gain profit, it seems I want to experience it ;D

I have never receive any bitcoin or many by mistake. If such a thing has ever happen, I believe that should be a very big mistake and I don't anyone sending bitcoin or money to encounter in such a mistake. And above all I don't wish to receive such bitcoin or money because it doesn't belong to me.

I wonder in the future if Bitcoin addresses can be coded so in the UI it says "send bob" btc for example. Or a wallet where you past in frequent wallet addresses but can label them.

What are the Odds? Almost impossible considering the huge amount of addresses available!!  

I have never experienced receiving or sending to the wrong address, but  if it's happen to me and I accept of course I consider that my fortune if no one contact me to collect it, so  I will use it and selling to cash.  :)

I haven't received anything accidentally, but if someone wants to donate I'm always happy to accept!

Good for your friend because it happens that luckily the coins accidentally get into your wallet and not in the others.
Because if it happen that someone got that there's definitely no turning back.
But as for me, as of the moment it never happens to me and if that happens I think it's not my fault like I don't know where I can return that. Maybe I just hold that coins like I don't want to touch it because it wasn't mine after all.

I have never received any payment by mistake and I do not know anybody from my friends who is so lucky.
Also I have never made payment by mistake to incorrect address. So there is a very very small opportunity for this in my opinion.

I haven't experienced that, have pity to those people of not getting their rewards because of mistake or typo error on sending their bitcoin or tokens.

It's a dev fault, dev must send the tokens according to the work done by participants. It is not fair for those people who did their best to make his/her posts complete on time.

I've never recieved any payment by mistake instead. bitcoin addresses are hard to remember many people choose copying the address or doing a scan QR code that's why rarely happens sent money to the wrong address

So if coins are sent to an invalid address, is there a way to verify the address is invalid and get your coins back?
Asking purely out of curiosity. If you can't I think it would help if you could, because I can imagine with mainstream adoption lots of people in total will have made these mistakes and it will turn some people off

It would be pretty cool to have a bunch of weird numbers of coins just appear.
There's coins that just can't get spent for money though.
