Title: New To Mining, GUIMiner can't find GPU.
Post by: iarobot on May 30, 2013, 01:25:02 PM
Hello!
I've just gotten started, literally this morning.

I'm not trying to earn anything, I'm just trying to get started and understand how everything works.  I've got a wallet, I've got Bitcoin running, I'm in a pool, and I've launched GUIMiner and put in my worker credentials.

When I click "start mining!" it says "nothing to mine on, exiting", and under Device it says "No OpenCL devices"

I'm running this on a crappy Dell tower with a Radeon 7500 (I know it's useless) and I am wondering if there is anything I need to do to enable OpenCL on the card.

Any help would be huge!
Thank you!

Your card doesn't support OpenCL and thus cannot mine. It is a 2001 card  :-\

Hahaha ok, thanks!  Crap.  Off to the GPU store.  Any recommendations for something cheap that works well as a mining GPU?

Thanks again.

A recent ATI card, something between 5000/6000/7000. It depends on how much you want to spend. But please note that bitcoin mining is every day more and more done by ASICs, not gpu, so investing today in gpus may not be a good idea.

I was just reading about that - thanks.  I'm going to have to look into ASICs!

with cheap electricity, it will take a while (4-5 months at least) until every GPU will become unprofitable (i have to pay 0,20 USD/kWH, so i guess i shut down my rigs in a month or two)
