Post by: Min3Er on May 30, 2013, 06:28:44 PM
I would like to start mining for Bitcoins, and Id like to ask if I could actually mine anything with HD 5450? And what about litecoin, could I get anything there?

Yes you can mine but that card is very very slow. Yes you can also mine litecoin but as i said, your card isn't exactly fast

Well I know that, but right now I really cant invest into something faster, so I just wanted to hear whether it is worth it. So what would be better for me to mine? Bitcoins or Litecoins?

With the announced adoption of Litecoins by MtGox, you would probably prefer go for Litecoins. The speculative opportunity is greater (if it's what you're looking for).
Anyway in a few months with all the asics shipping you would be able to get anything on bitcoin

You may want to check out ASIC Miner, as they have been shipping a USB-powered ASIC mining chip that looks pretty cool.

The problem is that everyone want to buy ASICs but so far only one company actually delivered them, and only few of them (like some hundreds or so). Even if you order one today, expect to wait months

Yes only Avalon has shipped yet. And now you can try to build your own hardware yourself by buying chips from them.

but they're selling by batch of 10k chips. So you may want to order a small amount via Group Buys through the forum. But indeed, as Gabi said, you could wait 10 weeks as they say

Depends what your interested in. A HD 5450 is mining Bitcoins at about 15 mhash/s - thatīs about 7 Cent a day if your card does 24 hours nothing else than mining. If you are paying anything for power, there is no chance to break even. To learn how to mine Cryptocoins or just for the fun of it, you can use your card as it supports OpenCL.

Thanks for this nice answer, yes we do pay for electricity and 7 cents per day would really not do it. So would my best option be to save some money and upgrade hardware?

Thanks for all the opinions so far.

Honestly, in that case, you'd be better off just buying Bitcoins. Or even using some of the services that give you free Bitcoins. It's not going to get less competitive anytime in the future either. Depends on the cost of electricity too of course, but I assume that isn't too cheap. And don't forget the cooling costs for your home! Yes, the heat generated can actually significantly affect your cooling costs now that it is summer.

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison#AMD_.28ATI.29

says a 5450 has between 12 and 18 MH for bitcoin, so lets say 15.

according to dustcoin.com this is 0.00062 BTC ($0.08) a day and 0.00434 BTC ($0.56) a week

https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison#wiki-ATI_AMD_GPUs

says a 5450 has 21 khash which is 0.0008 BTC's worth of LTC ($0.10) a day and 0.00562 BTC's worth of LTC ($0.72) a week

How do I assemble the board after buying chips from Avalon?

You can find a number of projects that design boards / miners or offes to assemble your chips bought in a group buy right here at Bitcointalk.
