Title: New bitcoin charity! bitcoin-charity.com
Post by: hayden on June 24, 2011, 06:59:46 PM
I really wanted to do something philanthropic with bitcoins, so I started a site that will hopefully become reputable and become able to really raise some funds for charities! The goal is to be very transparent, keep public records of all donations, and allow people to see real world results from their donations.

It's over at http://www.bitcoin-charity.com/ if anyone wants to get it started with a small donation, or provide comments and feedback. I'm working on making some simple PHP forms to dispense custom donation addresses so people can be listed and get cred for their donations.

Thanks!

edit: also, if you have a favorite charity you'd like to be added, please let me know! (http://www.bitcoin-charity.com/?page_id=18)

We need more charities. Develop a quality business plan and btcbook will be ready in the future to donate. Best of luck.

I like this.  Get some simple graphics in please.  Template looking sites do not put trust in the user.

You can see some details on how I plan to run the site here:

The site's a work in progress! Will definitely get some more graphics in there and an actual logo.

Up to 8 donations! I got the entire site using PHP now instead of manually updating stuff and I'll have the donation widget available soon (so you can submit your name/website and get credit for donations).

Nice job, site looks good. I hope it works out for you!

How do you plan to show the transparency from bitcoin to usd to charity? I see that you are planning on doing it, but I think that implementation will be the most important to get a lot of people on board.

Thanks!

We will have PDFs of receipts of transactions in MtGox, and people can see the coins moving from the bitcoin-charity wallet to one of MtGox's. The exchange rate is public knowledge, so the exact amount in USD converted is given. There will then be receipts of donations to each individual charity, which can be verified by simply contacting the charity in question if anyone wishes to do so. You're right that there's a certain level of trust because everyone is not likely to verify every single receipt of USD going to charities - but the option is there. In all likelyhood, the conversions to USD and donations to charities will only occur a couple times a year. Because of that, the amount of verification needed is minimal for any member of the public.

So in summary, the trust is there because everything is publicly verifiable.
