Hi... almost 3 hours ago, I sent 20 BTC through the Blockchain.info mixing service with a .001 BTC fee... now, 3 hours later, only 7.36 BTC has shown up in the receiving address and that particular transaction has only received 1 confirmation after a full hour. The whole bitcoin network seems rather slow tonight.

I've used the Blockchain.info mixing service multiple times in the past, without problems, with amounts up to 15 BTC at a time. They've all gone through flawlessly, and fairly quickly (within 30 minutes) which is making me worry about the above transaction.

Anyway, is this normal? 3 hours, for only 7 out of 20 BTC? I'm hoping the remainder shows up soon enough, and blockchain doesn't "forget" the forwarding transaction with the passage of this much time. Blockchain's automatically-added low fees (0.0001 BTC) don't help either, IMO, and should be changed to .0005 BTC or something.

I'll post again when the remainder shows up, or if it still hasn't after 12 hours or so.

OK, the remaining 12.53 BTC [approximately] just showed up, a full 4 hours after the initial transaction. No confirmations yet, but they'll come soon enough. So forget my previous post...    :P

I suppose the lesson here for newbies using the mixing service is to just wait it out, don't have a panic attack, and don't stay up half the night worrying about losing $$$ like I just did.   :)

Ok, I understand what a mixing service does. But what is the reason to "confusing the trail back to the funds' original source". When and why do I need to use it?

Basically, it increases your anonymity within the blockchain. I won't elaborate on any of various hypothetical reasons someone would want to do that, you can use your imagination.  ;D

If you dont want people to know where your BTC original came from.
As I understood it, it is used examply if you sell on Silkroad, or you recieved some stolen coins etc.

A necessary arguably-detrimental feature of Bitcoin is that all transactions are published, so everyone can know where everyone else's coins came from and went. Coin mixing helps prevent people from knowing where your coins are coming from and going, especially for reused addresses.

For example, if you're running a Respectable Business and play SDice with the investments, you want to mix the coins when you get them, have them go to a separate wallet where you send to SDice, then mix any winnings again and have them pop back into the "business wallet." Then, "Oh, look, we made 10BTC this week."

Alternately, maybe you're buying illicit goods, but have all your funds on an address attached to your name somehow. Using a mixing service, you can send your coins there and have them go where they need to be to buy what you want without anyone knowing anything except possibly that you sent your coins to a mixing service.

Or maybe you just want a sense of privacy.
