Title: What if another altcoin surpasses BTC in value?
Post by: JamesAdams on September 29, 2017, 12:09:39 PM
What will you do if some altcoin (XMR or ETH for example surpasses the value of BTC, either in market cap or by the price of a token each? Will you sell your BTC to buy the more "valuable" coin, or continue using and holding BTC? Also, what do you think are the chances that it could happen? I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions.

It can't happen since BTC is here from the beginning, or maybe in a few decades so it's easy to see it coming.

Anything is possible but Bitcoin currently enjoys a 10X price premium versus its closest competitor. Another coin, such as ETH could potentially overtake in in market-cap one day, but I still think that would be a few years off. Myself, I hold BTC as well as many of the popular alts, so I would probably continue to hold a variety of promising coins including BTC if it were to ever become dethroned.

I just dont see this happening anytime in the near term.  Bitcoin is what everyone thinks of when they hear cryptocurrency.  The name has barely even scratched the surface of educating the public.  To overtake Bitcoin you would have to erase all the progress made on saying Bitcoin is the future and that altcoins can serve other purposes. If an altcoin surpasses Bitcoin I would expect the overall market to be in alot of trouble.  Not saying it cant happen but I would expect that to take many years of development and innovation to be possible.

The only currency that can surpass the value of btc is eth. Its becoming quite popular. Quick transaction times and low fees is another plus plus point of eth over btc.

takes a long time to compete with BTC.

Why not? Let's see what will happen to Bitcoin this coming November Hard Fork, it's the 3rd Chain Split and it will be the real test for Bitcoin...You may wish to read the following...

If you're freaked out by a coin's individual units being worth more then you should abandon Bitcoin right now because there've been more than a few already. 42 coin stands out as the main example. That's because there were 42 in total. Kiddies should do their homework and figure out how many there are in total.

As for market cap, I think it's quite possible something else could go past on a run. Would it be the end of the world? I think it's time people let go of the idea of it being all about Bitcoin. There are projects that have no aspiration to be a currency or store of value that could be worth more. The only competition they're in with BTC is the funds sloshing around exchanges.

In that scenario I wouldn't care.

People says that ETH is the future king coin but compare within BTC vs ETH you can find a Huge Distance.

Nothing happens, we keep having and trading bitcoin still. Ethereum can pass bitcoin in the future but this doesn't change the balance betwee bitcoin and others. I mean bitcoin doesn't become weak because of this.

Yes I agree to you that it takes time to compete the price of bitcoin. Bitcoin now is a strong currency because there are many investors and supporters of bitcoin that don't want to dump the price of bitcoin even there is a bad news that appear and cause the price to dump it is some ways to attract more people to buy bitcoin.

Actually there is...

http://i68.tinypic.com/2uemcrt.png

Lol. It's just a joke. I found it on google. This is a scam. They call it "the billion coin"(TBC).
This is a scam because you can't see its marketcap at coinmarketcap. Also several bad reviews from reputable sources.
But seriously, i don't see any altcoin which gonna surpass bitcoin. But of course its too early to say that. Maybe after a year, there's an altcon surpasses bitcoin. Time will tell...
But as of now, bitcoin is really unstoppable because the community is getting bigger and bigger each day. So to see bitcoin surpassed by an altcoin is unimaginable.

I barely doubt that these coins will cross the value of bitcoin because they don't have that much market capitalisation and they will never achieve one. It needs attention of big investors who believes in the coin but surely there will be none as long as bitcoin is there.

Ahh! Well first of all the first thing should be clear then we can talk about this. But that would be obvious if any other coin surpasses the bitcoin then we will have to switch there.

for me, i thinks its not, no one alt-coins can surpass bitcoin, but if has one alt-coins can surpass bitcoin, maybe i will sell mine (bitcoin) and buy more "valuable" coin to earn much profits than the existing one. but its never gonna happen dude, wake up and dont assume that one of those altcoin youve mentioned has a potential to surpass bitcoin in the future but its not. because bitcoin is the only one original cryptocurrency leading in the market that cannot copy/imitate by its own value and price.

People should stop focus on the value of an altcoin or their market caps. Altcoins enjoy no actual usage other than the speculative aspect, and that's something people here don't seem to think about.

There have already been altcoins with a higher unit value than Bitcoin, and there have been several altcoins with a higher market cap than Bitcoin ~ it's absolutely meaningless.

No altcoin comes even close to the level of usage that Bitcoin experiences, or how secure its network is, or how much money is going through its ecosystem, and that's the most important thing here.

Altcoins come and go, and due to cheap tricks they can have a massive market cap, or a massive unit value, but that's as I said, meaningless. Bitcoin remains the first and only crypto coin that enjoys the far majority of the support.

You panic over things that are probably not a issue at all. Even if a Alt coin becomes more popular than Bitcoin, it would not

mean that it would be the end of Bitcoin. People still buy other cars, even if one model become more popular than the others.

People buy coins for different reasons... some people could stay with Bitcoin, because it was the original coin.  ;)

Anything is possible, but this will not happen this year or in the next 5-10 years. Bitcoin was the first so it is a factor why this might not happen, but to answer your question i will still hold on to my bitcoin as i dont see this happening soon however, i can start trading little by little with alt coin converting bitcoin to alt coin and vice versa, this way you gain profit little by little and if you think that another alt coin will overtake bitcoin then trade or sell what you have.

the question should be ,,, "is another altcoin able to surpass the current bitcoin value"?
there are several reasons why bitcoin is currently superior to other altcoins, such as because cryptocurrency is able to give trust to its users, but it does not rule out other altcoin can be higher than bitcoin ,,

Not in the next 5 years I would say. It's going to take a tremendous amount of new innovation for any new coin to overtake Bitcoin. That being said, the upcoming potential hard fork that would call itself Bitcoin might be one of the only chance that is going to present in the near future.

this is one of the question that is always being asked. mostly the reason is because people see the rise of bitcoin from nothing to $5000 and still rising and think to themselves they have missed out and the only way is to find something that is still in that "nothing" stage so they can buy it.

but it is a mistake. bitcoin is still in the "nothing" stage when you consider the future price is going to be $200,000!

also these altcoins are not really doing anything these days. obviously they are profitable but you should not expect much out of them in the long term. they get pumped short term and then die off.

It will be huge for sure if another coin surpasses bitcoin, but I don't think it could happen. There is a reason why bitcoin remained superior from other coins out there you know, and it is really hard to believe that some coin can defeat the reigning bitcoin. And if by some miracle that a coin surpasses bitcoin, I will still not sell my bitcoin and exchange it with the new one because I have a lot of faith that bitcoin will make its comeback and take back its throne.

This has happened, not in terms of cost, not capitalization. Although there are altcoys that cost millions of dollars, but most likely they serve money laundering and transactions without taxes. Bitcoin is the father. A lot of things depend on it both in the value and volatility of the market, both individually and in total capitalization.

I feel that most altcoins do not serve any actual usage, BUT we have a few such as XMR and ETH that actually have real life usages (privacy and smart contracts) while others have low transaction fees (DOGE or BURST for example). I somewhat agree with many of your thoughts that it would basically be impossible to happen in the next 5 years - but note that 5 years relatively long time. With more and more people getting interested in crypto, BTC is going to be traded a fair lot. However the increased interest will probably result in a higher chance of people developing alts that are "revolutionary" in some sense and be as sought after as BTC.

ITs possible, this is what Ethereum fans are calling the Flippening over on Reddit. If it does happen my reaction would depend on the reason, if its a case of the rise of another currency then no problem. However, if it happened because of a law in BTC that would be a different story.

I expect BTC will retain a premium spot as a store of value/a kind of a gold standard for a long time. It is a little cumbersome for small, fast transactions - therefore another currency might rise in popularity without hurting BTC.

Actually there is another altcoin that surpasses BTC in value per coin not market cap, that coin is called 42Coin.
42Coin has a price of around $8k per coin as of now, and guess what? That didn't make Bitcoin users to switch to 42Coin.
In the end, price has a little role in increasing the number of coin users.

Stole my reply :)

the price for all these coins is entirely too speculative. even the price of bitcoin, in this loft state, has no price basis in reality. price isnt a selling point; price can spike at 100% in these markets. Therefore, price is not an indicator of interest/popularity.
Above poster also has an extremely valid point about adoption. 42 coin is pretty old, yet the market cap is utter shit. price doe not equal popularity, as it does in traditional asset markets. Price indicates speculative enthusiasm, in this space  ;D

There's no chance. Bitcoin price is too much high. It take some times or i should say a years to increase altcoin value upto bitcoin. Do you know what's the bitcoin first price ? It was 0.31$ in 2010 and now it surpass 4000$. I heard it can cross 10000$ in future.
So currently its all Bitcoin and no chances of any altcoins.

I don't see any potential coin that would somehow surpass bitcoin's value in the market. If there is any potential alt coin in the market or a coin that is still in the making right now, maybe it can only matched BTC's value but can not surpassed because i think that a BTC's value will rise to million per BTC in the future.

Primalbase Token  - $6,397 Trading Volume (24h) which is better than of the above ones but still is similar to the Trading Volume of the worst coins around.

bitBTC has $78,911 Trading Volume (24h) which is also  too low to be taken seriously.

As far as I know, the only coin that surpassed Bitcoin in price and at the same time had a decent trading volume, was Zcash. But that lasted only 5 days in the very beginning of the coin's existence and never happened again.

I agree that in terms of usage, Bitcoin is still more superior and this is the reason why no altcoin would surpass Bitcoin. Bitcoin will continue to be popular because of its usage and security of network.

This can not happen because the number of bitcoins is limited. The quantity of ETH is not limited. This means that in the future ETH will experience the brunt of inflation. After ETH will reach its peak will fall that cannot be stopped.

It may happen in the future i guess it is depend on the investors which coins they are going to support from the time being to the future. Success of the coins depends on the investors who continue to invest on it. So if majority of the investors wanted to replace bitcoin on the top spot anything can happen.

I would stay with Bitcoins.
But i also would invest in a Coin which is rising rapidly and seems to bypass BTC in the next Weeks/Months
I don't think i would sell all my BTC just to buy more of the "more valuable" coin at that time.
BTC is on the market for a pretty long time.. this gives safety.

This of course is a different thing if BTC drops to the bottom pretty rapidly..

Instead of we assuming what will happen, I think its better we all wait till that time to know what we will happen the reason is because human beings by default like to predict their behaviour before hand only to behave on the contrary when faced with such scenerio. For those that are saying its not possible, I am sure several would be the first to dump btc in case that should happen for the next best alternative.

Definitely possible but not very likely, since there are more miners for BTC and also a lot more community support to it than any other coins, and also it is the first of it's kind, thus it has attained the greatest value, and attracts the most number of people.
There is definitely no chance of this in the near future, as long as some news does not cause HUGE decline in the market cap of bitcoin, as people will definitely adopt whichever crypto which is the most profitable to them. At the moment its BTC. It may change in the future, and in that case BTC will only be considered an altcoin. The future is unpredictable, so nothing certain can be said.

All we can do is wait and watch.

If you're saying BTC value per coin then 42coin has surpassed BTC in value per coin  ;D .
42Coin is priced at 2.08 BTC per coin as of now or roughly $8892.92. Even though it's priced more expensive than Bitcoin, and since there is nothing special about it, people aren't gonna use 42Coin the same way as people using Bitcoin.

A few months back, Ethereum came quite close to surpassing Bitcoin in terms of market cap. ETH has its own advantages, such as the low transaction fee and compatibility with the tokens. But the drawback is that it has fewer number of users when compared to BTC, and that some of the devs looks quite shady.

It won't ever happen don't you worry about it, for simple reason, there no coin capable of crossing it. All these coins are alt, they are a copy of it, they will never be able to generate the buzz Bitcoin does, even today crypto currency is regocnized only by the name of Bitcoins, so you should not worry so much about it. I would never sell my coins in any scenario, till I need funds, and I don't stock alts cause I don't rate them, they are not worth it.

i can see this happening if those greedy bastards keep hardforking bitcoin for easy profits. etherium has the potendial to compete with bitcoin as in most exhanges you can already trade X/ETH with most tokens aswell there will be exchanges that will be selling and buying ETH for fiats pretty soon.

Investors go where there is the most money to make. If for some reason, a new version of bitcoin comes out after every split, that might not be good for bitcoin. The decentralization aspect is being taken advantage by some just to make some money that results in splits. Only time will tell if bitcoin maintains its hold of the number one crypto currency and people would be the ultimate judge on where it goes from there.

I'm not sure how to answer that. But let me share a piece of my mind

I'm a cryptocurrency trader and I notice that the price ofvother digital asset based on Blockchain technology have a similar price curve as Bitcoin. If Bitcoin price decline, other digital asset also decline, and vise versa. But this only occurs with Blockchain asset that have close rank with Bitcoin.

So im uncertain that any altcoin can surpass Bitcoin, not in this coming few years at least

Just like you I will still hold my bitcoins if there is another altcoin who would manage to surpass it. Bitcoin has been the most popular crypto for years and I don't think that it will die as soon as another altcoin rises. I also believed that bitcoin will not be easily surpassed, for years many people had been using bitcoin as a major equivalent token in trading. Bitcoin may decreased its value but it will not die. However, if another altcoin won over bitcoin, I hope that it will have lower transaction fees and faster transactions process.

If Ethereum or Zcash bypass bitcoin in value I should be very happy as I am mining them and many others are doing the same with their rigs. The problem is this will never happen because Bitcoin is the king of the cryptos and is much more widely accepted in online stores, casinos, steam and many other website where you can pay a subscription online. No one asks for Ethereum or Monero or Zcash payment, they all ask for Bitcoin first.

I think it is impossible for such a thing to happen since bitcoin was the first coin and it is almost 10 years old. Also there is a huge difference of price, bitcoins price is 10 times bigger than any other altcoin.
Now bitcoin is also used in some online and offline shops and the market for it is bigger and bigger.
An altcoin cant surpass bitcoin because it has to grow a lot in a very short time wich cant happen becsuse altcoins price ar determined from bitcoin price. They all grow together. When the bitcoin price goes down also they ethereum price goes down

It is unlikely that any altcoin in the near future is able to bypass bitcoin at a price or capitalization. Too large gap. However, if such a fantastic event happens, it is always necessary to remember the high volatility of the crypto currency. Therefore, you do not need to rush to buy those coins that go to the leaders at a cost. All this can be temporary. Before you transfer a part of the currency to another, a more successful digital currency, you need to make sure that for its growth there were objective reasons. And with bitcoin if the money is to be rented, then only partially, in any case no more than thirty percent. Bitcoin will always regain his lead. Equal to it yet.

Please, read this thread carefully. There are several altcoins which are higher in value than Bitcoin. Do they really cost anything is another question, but it is a fact that their price in USD is higher than of Bitcoin's.

But if we reformulate the topic question to "Can any other altcoin be more important than Bitcoin?" then I would answer no, Bitcoion has always been and will always remain the most important crypto.

For me the situation wherein a certain coin can surpass the bitcoin's price in the future is simply impossible.
Bitcoin is now being looked upon by some people as jewelry that someone must possess.  And this adds to the reason why its price continuously grows despite all of the hindrances.
Therefore other altcoins may drastically increase in price but never to the point that it can surpass bitcoin.

For a long time now, Vitalik's Ethereum is considered to be the next in the throne of the one occupied by Bitcoin right now. But for now, it remains to be a potential rather than a fact as the value is now playing in the vicinity of $300. Now, I am holding both Bitcoin and Ethereum because I believe in the potential of these two cryptocurrencies. However, we don't have the future in our hands as there can be things to happen beyond our control...both Bitcoin and Ethereum have both history of crashes but they could also gain back fast.

Now, what if Ethereum would one day overtake Bitcoin in terms of value? Well, we should then accept it in case it would be true...there is no problem with that and I would still continue holding on both coins. I am sure that Vitalik would be so happy if this can come true soon. For now, Bitcoin remains to be at the top even with the recent bans in China.

We all know that Bitcoin is the number one cryptocurrency in the world. So, to beat down Bitcoin is not easy and will take decades.
But, I heard some people say that other crypto like ETH is developing something that will surpasses the BTC. Maybe it's protocol.
We will see in the future. For me personally use Bitcoin as investment and collect only. I want to mine, but not with Bitcoin.
That because the price is too high and the competitors is too much right now. The mining system will get harder too.

I have the same thought that BTC is the most important crypto money that has been kept by wider usage for the investors. Due to the expectation on the long run btc might perform better than all, this is what we have current situation. It increased more than 400% in this year compare to last year, it fluctuates a lot but in a period of time it is worth to keep it.

There is no big deal if some altcoins surpasses the bitcoin in value because it is just a value and they can't surpasses bitcoin in features and the things that bitcoin has. Bitcoin has a lot of great things that can be only found on itself and any altcoins doesn't have any chance for that to beat bitcoin and replace it.

I think the possibility is very far, because in terms of price BTC has a high price compared to other altcoin.
It took a long time to compete with BTC.
I think that for the moment there is no altcoin like it that can do that, but in the future it is likely to happen.
The only currency that can exceed the value of btc is eth. It became very popular.
Fast transaction time and low cost is plus plus value over other btc.
So just enjoy what is right now and not be afraid about the upcoming changes.

There is always the possibility of that happening, in my opinion BITCOIN has the highest value because it's the pioneer in the world of cryptocurrencies but as time goes on more and more cryptos will come out and investors are actually the only ones who can make another coin value go higher than bitcoins if they feel it will make them more money.

In my opinion there is a very little chance that it will happen. Using the scale of 100% there is only 15% that it will happen.
But if it will happen, I think we will be the one that will benefit from it also because aside from additional investment we can also gain additional profit from both coins.

What do you understand by the term "Altcoin "? The new coin you're talking about is an Altcoin and so no new coin can be another Bitcoin even if their operations are similar and uses the blockchain as well.

In the future , may be some other altcoin surpasses BTC value . But for now bitcoin is 10 times the price of other altcoins . Maybe , ETH one day be able to surpass bitcoins because of its growth rate , but it is still going to take many years in order to fulfill that agenda . Bitcoin is still the most trusted cryptocurrency and most of the people tend to invest on bitcoins because of its high volatility . Many other altcoins comes and goes but the support bitcoin has is not going to be effected by all that .

I would not sell bitcoin, and buy that alt at that high value will also be not a wise option. But if we see a coin going towards bitcoin at market cap, it will be a good investment, even if it does not match or went pass bitcoin value.

Till now I haven't found anything to justify the huge market caps of these altcoins. On the other hand, BCH is having solid basics, and a good team to support.

We live to see but al these Altcoins are just a mere copy and upgrade of Bitcoin and should they change their ways or a new coin with completely different technology can give Bitcoin a good run else the clones have nothing more to offer than they at doing currently.

Bitcoin is the head coin, so if it raises or loses value it remains the same. So there is no use to compare bitcoin with other altcoins, people who love bitcoin always invest in it and search for other coins which is best at that time, that doesn't mean that other coins surpass BTC in value.

The last time I checked, the was another coin which had a total supply of 85 coins and only 49.9 in circulation, I think its worth about 2.03btc I think: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/42-coin/ (https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/42-coin/). I think XMR and ETH price can get over Bitcoin price only when the total amount of Bitcoin all over the world is mined and some more hard fork happened make Bitcoin price dumped in the future. I think at that time I'll try to sold my Bitcoin before all amount of Bitcoin mined out and maybe I'll exchange some of my Bitcoin into other better altcoin. I think that it is almost impossible, there's still a long road of adaption for BTC and during that proces I don't think any altcoin will surpass BTCs value.
Though I think it is very possible that once the world has become adapted to BTC and crypto is a more daily practice of life that there is potential for other coins to grow bigger than BTC. But right now you have to take in account that BTC is traded mainly for all other currencies and this reaffirms its position over other coins.

Even when the entire number of coins that can be mined has reached the circulation, the value of bitcoin won't be overcome by other altcoins that grow high in value. Being the base always has it importance over other assets that make it more valuable due to the limited supply and increased demand.

But the valur of Bitcoin will still be high in future compared to other coins as the price of bitcoin will also increase with time right?. If because of any reason there is a stop in the growth of Bitcoin prices then Etherum can surpass Bitcoin in the future.

As of this moment, the value of Bitcoin is way higher than any alt coin so it will be hard for them to catch up since Bitcoin's market value is again increasing ,knowing that there will be a hardfork and if it will be successful as the previous one, altcoin might be left out. But that's still possible, the question is, will it be in long term? or how long will it last if it will surpass Bitcoin? Altcoins are good for short term investment, Bitcoin still is better in long term so I would stick to Bitcoin.

in the past there was some coins that was minted and distributed as "rare" coin, with scarce availability.
these coins have an individual value more then btc, so we have already an example.
but an altcoin that can be used by everyone and isn't distributed among all potential users, it's just useless.

by the way, it's really hard we see a new project like btc that could surpass in the value and even distribution.
now btc is already know by main stream ( a lot of people know it and people don't think you're completely crazy when talk about btc :D ) .
so imagine "the new btc" as promo for a new altcoins... no seems impossible to me...

Eventhough it is impossibe this will happen, but the question is interesting. If and only bitcoin will on its lowest dip soon over 1000$ below that is the only chance that either XRM or ethereum can surpass. But higher to that is too much expectation and much exaggerated. If I will rate it from 1 - 10 and 10 as the highest probability to happen. I would say 2 as of today. We might happen in the furture but only thing I can surely do is HODL bitcoin no matter what the price and I’m not much of an altcoin guy but opened for possibilities.

It is impossible for that to happen because the prices grow in parallel. When the bitcoin prices go up also the ehtereum price go up. On the other way if the they bitcoin price decreases also they ethereum price decreases.

The most important is the price obviously, even the market cap mean nothing in crypto world due to some reasons.
How if we discuss about this when an altcoin could reach at least $1000? There are few coins that ever reach that point such as bitcoin cash, byteball (almost) and Monkey (MNY), but none of them could stand at the point for a long time. Which mean, there's no any coin that could surpass bitcoin value.

Of course through Bitcoin (and some via Ethereum). Aside from that, Bitcoin is the one who started it all. Therefore, it is the mther of all coins. And lastly, it is the only coin with unknown developers. We inly know its developer by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto.

I think it is not possible for some altcoin to overcome Bitcoin. All of the altcoins are Bitcoin based. I mean, look at the exchange sites, how can you buy an altcoin? Of course through Bitcoin (and some via Ethereum). Aside from that, Bitcoin is the one who started it all. Therefore, it is the mther of all coins. And lastly, it is the only coin with unknown developers. We inly know its developer by the name of Satoshi Nakamoto.

Yes I agree it's impossible for other altcoin to overcome Bitcoin. It's like a tree, Bitcoin is the root and the altcoins are the branches. Without the root the tree will die.

It is not the same concept in bitcoin. If bitcoin will die then the altcoins will survive because there is already a lot of exchanges that accepts other altcoins as an exchange to other and not only bitcoin and the perfect example for that is the ethereum coin which you can use to trade altcoins in different exchanges.

Leave it like that then. So be it. But i don't think Bitcoin's value that time will be too low compared to the coin that surpasses its value and i don't think that i will be selling my bitcoins just to have the more valuable coin in the market. But it will be a good idea to invest that new coin instead rather than selling my bitcoins that i have so I'll be keeping my bitcoins and hold it as long as its value keeps on rising that time.

nothing is impossible even in the cryptoworld and so, if an altcoin happens to surpass the greatness of btc, then be it. but me buying those tokens will still depend on the coins performance and progress over the months or years it stayed on top of the list. however, it will take quite a long time for this coin to surpass btc and developers will need a lot of effort and time to be able to achieve such goal.

I consider bitcoin as an investment and if I see another altcoin that would surpass it then maybe I would shift to that coin simply because I would invest to the coin that would be more profitable. Another option is to invest as well to that altcoin not leaving bitcoin totally because it might be just temporary because of a hype. Bitcoin has a strong support from its community that's why it always goes back up because of the demand and if another altcoin would totally surpass bitcoin in terms of demand, price and support then maybe I would invest more to this altcoin.

I'd stick to Bitcoin ofcourse. That is possible to happen but we all know that altcoin is only good for short term investment and Bitcoin is still better for long term investment. One good example is ETH  since it is oftenly used in ICOs it has a chance to reach the same market cap of Bitcoin, but Bitcoin still has a large market value. So I will still hold my Bitcoin no matter what.

Bitcoin will remain the number one like USD. other coins will compete like many are competing with USD.

Noone can predict the future. There are good alternatives for Bitcoin at the corner. The main problem is to keep price stable.

It is not likely, but possible. I think it will be great to diversify. In fact, there're already very good reasons to diversify as some of the coins have very good roi.

Maybe it will take many years but knowing bitcoin it's so far to happen.
Of course when an altcoin rises, bitcoin will also rise like bitcoin will be never left out to this world.
Bitcoin will always be the best and father of all coins. And thinking bitcoin is too big to defeat by anything not anyone.

It can't happen since BTC is here from the beginning, or maybe in a few decades so it's easy to see it coming.
If we make a comparison of all the coins present in the world of crypto currencies, then there will be only one name at the top of list and that is Bitcoin since the time this concept of Bitcoin was introduced. We never know what will happen in the future but I am very much positive that Bitcoin will remain on the top of list.

I think that Bitcoin will still as the first valuable crypto currency online for a very long time. Actually all the altcoins depend in teir prices and trading status with Bitcoin, I am not seeking any altcoin could surpass BTC in the near future at least

Yep, the biggest mistake some holders make is panic selling when Bitcoin goes down. Keeping it for a longer time is the key. It was shown to us many times that however low Bitcoin falls it will recover with time and will rise even more than before. We  can't say the same about other cryptos, although keeping some of them is not a bad idea too. It's just pretty hard to determine which ones exactly.

Possibility to surpass the bitcoin is up to zero percent and no coin is so much credible and trustable so that people can left the bitcoin and go toward it, bitcoin is not just coin it is name of excellence believe and faith so don’t get into such debate bitcoin will stay at the top it is a trend setter and no one will cross the boss who has hold of crypto.

It would matter little and not be as solid. Bitcoin is the coin that traders buy with FIAT to purchase other coins. That is a big reason for its power. The exchanges only use a few coins as a base for trading and Bitcoin has more access points from FIAT than the others. You cannot get Fiat with any alt unless you convert it in bitcoins. This can be consider on factor of bitcoin domination.

Never heard about DAO platform or ETC (ethereum classic?) ? https://blockgeeks.com/guides/what-is-ethereum-classic/

i think it never happen but similar to bitcoin atleast ,if that will happen i think i will go to high value coin and invest a little in bitcoin then try to be expert in new coin like i search wallet or anything to know the new coins high than bitcoin

What do you understand by the term "Altcoin "? The new coin you're talking about is an Altcoin and so no new coin can be another Bitcoin even if their operations are similar and uses the blockchain as well.
Even there are altcoins or maybe the coins from splits, like BCH will not surpass btc value, btc can recover from downs. Btc will always be the superior among any coins.

most popular and some altcoin cant be popular with out bitcoin as a mother of all coin and nothing can ever compared i think and super agree with that no coin can surpass the btc now.
No other coin is competing to bitcoin in the market, price is not the main circle of influence popularity also matters and all over the world folks are talking about bitcoin because it is acceptable across many region and it is the most valuable and strong coin of era and no other coin can gain such a strength and value like bitcoin.

As far as I know the valuation of all altcoins depends on the bitcoin because they consider it as the mother and the benchmark of their price so I don't think there would be an altcoin that can surpass the value of bitcoin and if that will happen maybe bitcoin is no longer the main crypto currency that is being accepted and use worldwide.

Bitcoin would then fall, because then many people will see that it has no potential anymore. Everyone will then invest in that altcoin. This is possible, because bitcoin is unstable.

However Bitcoin holds a massive amount of market price so i think that it would be not so easily.

I'm not gonna sell my btc due to the reason that an altcoin surpassed its value in any sense. Everything is possible and will likely happen depending on the circumstances so there might be a chance that an altcoin took btc's place. Don't hate me on this I'm just an open minded person. So, let's say that it actually happens I'll continue investing in btc and invest with the said altcoin using my money instead of having to sell btc. In that case, I will have more investments in various coins.

It is not going to happen for the next 100 years I guess. Look at the number of users. ETH is miles behind Bitcoin in that regard. And look at the number of places accepting ETH. Compared to the number of stores and shops accepting BTC, the same for ETH is quite minuscule. And recently, the ETH adoption has suffered several setbacks, especially in China.

There is always the possibility of that happening and in my opinion, it's going to happen very soon. As soon as investors see that bitcoin is not giving them enough profits and they view that another cryptocurrency is going to give them the exact thing, they are going to flock towards it and make their money.

Actually, I'm not thinking about it because I believe that it is a bit impossible at this moment, looking only the values and gaps of bitcoin and other altcoins. Despite some speculations that ETH will sooner or later take over BTC and will be the next BTC and the hard forks that happened, look at where bitcoin is right now, it is miles away from the other. Well, we cannot ignore the fact that there's a possibility, who knows right but I guess that's only a tiny one and it will surely take more and more years before it will gonna happen.

It is not like that. There is no rocket science behind this fact that bitcoin is only famous just of having big profit ratios.

As now, if another coin with more profit ratio would be developed, believe me there is nothing about bitcoins would be remained on news. It is just matter of money and profits whosoever can make more that will be the king.

Unlikely, BTC represents like real-world gold in terms of value, it serves as it hedging currency to provide value for other alts as well. Resistance to change is very high unless the alts reach audience and users within a very far coverage like ETH (milliosn and millions of frequent users). Taking BTC spots is very difficult as the legacy properties it holds as the pioneer of cryptocurrency.

The market would definitely adjusted accordingly by the time you mentioned came, look how alts built on Ethereum blockchain/smart contract are depending its native ETH.

In today's condition, chances seem to be very less for an altcoin to surpass the value of bitcoin. No such potential coin is found till now.At once,Ethereum was expected more. But it already had faced a hard fork and just got split in to ETH and ETC.

Even the most expected Monero and Zcash which provided full anonymity in transactions as an added feature have also failed to succeed bitcoin.

Now,we are now just seeing most new coins as just pump and dump coins which does not deliver any thing unique.

It seems that only Bitcoin would continue to be the king of crypto currencies for far more years.

Then it is good, as long as the value of bitcoins never drops or totally destroyed, it is good for us because there are another coins that is worth to invest. With that we can now have a lot of coins to invest in that we know that our money will not be wasted. If ever that ethereum surpass bitcoins it is in favor of me because I have saving all of my ethereum and I'm hoping that their value will also rise just what bitcoins are today. So if that happen I'm gonna be a millionaire in no time.

I find this in marketcap:
https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/42-coin/
I don't know what it's used for but i know that i'll not think to buy it for its price.

I think OP means more valuable in terms of price and marketcap, so each coin and the total marketcap needs to be worth more than bitcoin
Price is just figure the thing that matters is popularity and usage among the people around the globe and nobody knows any other coin as compared to bitcoin everyone will prefer bitcoin to deal in and that’s why there is no chance of competition with any other coin because bitcoin is trend setter and backbone of crypto and its popularity tells its worth.

there used to be a time when myspace was the biggest social medium and no one knew about facebook

Well, I am using only one cryptocurrency and that is bitcoin.  I do not think that some altcoins will surpass bitcoin because bitcoin is the most popular one.  It is the first and very well stabilized digital currency.  All emerging and existing digital currency prices were based on bitcoin price.  In case it happened, I will just buy some altcoin but I will not lose my bitcoin because I trust this and I live with it.

If that really happens then we just shift to that altcoin. It's just an easy transition because as long that it is convertible to each other then we have nothing to worry about.

After seeing the present growth rate of Bitcoin , we cant even think of any other altcoin surpassing BTC in value. But if some other altcoin such as ETH which is also growing at a fast rate surpasses BTC in value then demand for BTC will drop which will have a bad effect on the price as price will also drop down.People will start giving preference to ETH and will stop using BTC which will destroy BTC .

Presently 1BTC is approximately 4700$ and 1ETH is approximately 305 $ which means there is a huge difference between the price and on the basis of current price it looks impossible that any other altcoin will surpass BTC in value.

Even in the more distant future, bitcoin is not threatened by the fact that it can be circumvented by the cost of some altcoyin. The second after bitcoin in the capitalization table is the etherium, which is more than ten times cheaper than bitcoin. Therefore, bitcoin is the undisputed leader of all crypto-currencies.

First of all I don't think that will happen, second I will basically do nothing if ever another altcoin will surpass BTC. And I don't think there is an altcoin meant to create for that reason now, most of the coins usually has a purpose why it is created and not to just surpass Bitcoin so I'm sure BTC don't feel threatened at all.

Bitcoins are one of the highest volumes in the market. And if there is more then it will be harder for them. Because it is trusted by all people. The only way to beat it is to follow his course and the years he has surpassed. That way, an Altcoins can exceed the price of bitcoins. The future is faintly readable so we go through the flow and accept everything happening

Mr. Adam Smith will also find it difficult to figure what exactly can happen to the crypto currency world economically. Altcoins have a bigger capital than bitcoin, which makes its supply to be way more than its demand, people want to buy altcoins at a cheaper price and sell it for 100%,200%,300% profit. That's only part where altcoins come to play, it cannot compete against bitcoin in other aspects.

If XMR or Eth surpasses bitcoin someday i would still hold half of my btc and sell the other half to buy the altcoin that surpasses btc. the reason for this is that if before news breaks out like eth for example surpasses btc it will spread like wild fire and the effect will be large scale. but before the news takes effect on the exchange that's the right time to sell btc and buy altcoins so The price of btc is still high at that time. After that wait for that altcoin price to rise even more then sell some of it to get profit and buy btc at a lower price. The reason for buying btc is that the btc will surely will make a comeback thus increasing more profits.

Just remember in any trading buy low and sell high and you will surely get profit. Do not let greed and making decisions without thinking take over you.

I don't see any altcoin to be able to surpass Bitcoin in short term. This is due to the fact that BTC has been here for a very long time as the first crypto.
One exception, of course, would be if something unexpected would happen.
Even if it would surpass BTC i would still hold/keep coins.
Im not saying i wouldn't also Invest in the surpassing coin.

Also, I am sure that bitcoin will recover its value as time goes by.

No i don't think that is true if an alter coin will surpass bitcoin i would be the number 1 i personally do think that that will happen i am actually almost sure which coin will surpass it but i am not sure how long it is going to take.

The price of bitcoin is still fluctuating and this is a sign that it is alive and a lot of users still demand for it. Altcoins today are still being horde because the prices of these altcoins are also fluctuating. Or Bitcoin could continue to maintain its lead?  But hey, it isn't going to be easy for any Altcoin to dethrone Bitcoin. Few months ago I thought Ethereum could beat Bitcoin to become the no 1 crypto, strangely its price remains at N300 while Bitcoin suddenly started flying high after successful upgrades & resisting attacks

Instead of another coin surpassing Bitcoin, I think the flip will only happen if there is a significant flaw found in Bitcoin's code, or if some other catastrophe like a malevolent entity obtains 51% hashing power and controls the network.  Bitcoin won't be dethroned, it will have to fail on its own for something else to overtake it.  Its network effect is too great at this point.

The only currency that can surpass the value of btc is eth. Its becoming quite popular. Quick transaction times and low fees is another plus plus point of eth over btc.
yes I agree with you, only ETH is able to compete with BTC,
but it takes a long time, because the price of ETH is very far from BTC.
but we don't know what will happen in the future, it could be BTC replaced by ETH or not.

Also, what do you think are the chances that it could happen? I would like to hear your thoughts and opinions.
In my own opinion, the case where altcoins like ETH surpassing the BTC in terms of value is POSSIBLE but not PROBABLE. I mean, it is really possible that it will happen, but the probability is less than 1%, I think. Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency in the world, and it is hard for people to just leave bitcoin and transfer their money to other altoins (I mean, why should I choose those new cryptos and leave the TRUSTED, TRIED, and TESTED).

What will you do if some altcoin (XMR or ETH for example surpasses the value of BTC, either in market cap or by the price of a token each? Will you sell your BTC to buy the more "valuable" coin, or continue using and holding BTC?

If ever any altcoins surpasses BTC in terms of its value and market cap, then I would still hold on my BTC. Why will I buy these altcoins AFTER surpassing BTC? That will be an unwise decision. The thing here is that we should buy the cheaper altcoins/tokens and wait for their values to rise up, not to buy altcoins/tokens with high value.

I can't see that scenario happening in near future at all. Currently bitcoin is a very strong flagship of crypto and i can't imagine alt surpassed bitcoin. If we are talking about 10 years later maybe it can happen as bitcoin tech will be outdated.
I can't see Aldo that other altcoin will surpass bitcoins value since its value is tripled or quadruple higher than other altcoins. Well maybe I shouldn't under estimate the potential of other altcoins but for I didn't see any altcoins would either tie or surpass butcoin, none of them.

very difficult to compete with bitcoin. I think there is no allcoin that can match the current bitcoin. but a lot of allcoin can make me rich in an instant. depending on the luck and coins I take as an investment.

I think yes its difficult to other altcoin to compete with bitcoin. I guess this thing isn't that puzzle to anyone here who knows the current value of bitcoin and so other altcoins. I didn't see any kind of altcoin would surpass bitcoin but if it so I didn't know, maybe I will be surprised also. But then every altcoin have their own potential in their own way.

Been wondering this too. Could automatically make Bitcoin an Alternative-Coin (Altcoin)? Or Bitcoin could continue to maintain its lead?  But hey, it isn't going to be easy for any Altcoin to dethrone Bitcoin. Few months ago I thought Ethereum could beat Bitcoin to become the no 1 crypto, strangely its price remains at N300 while Bitcoin suddenly started flying high after successful upgrades & resisting attacks
I also came to this curiosity of mine that I also asked to myself what if other altcoins surpasses bitcoin? Would it be possible? Well I guess it maybe yes and no,yes because we couldn't tell what will gonna happen next to digital currency world, who would've thought right? It's no because I believe in the superiority of bitcoin over other altcoin so whatever may happen let's all be prepared.

maybe if another alternative coins surpasses the bitcoin in terms of value then it is time to the bitcoin it can reached it limit all we to say was a good of bitcoin. if the time has come then accept it don't push it if it is a fate. yes if the bitcoin was gone and surpasses by other alternative coins it is really that it have changes because they need to adjust that the preloved bitcoin was gone. but i think the value it is not enough to determine what are the good coins it is. because it is a digital currency and we know the main used of digital as a money online and it is need to become a faster in terms of transaction

Users have quoted different altcoins having the growth to surpass the value of bitcoin. If we go through the list one can understand the difference between the particular altcoin and bitcoin. Reaching the value of bitcoin is not that simple and if some altcoin makes it, then bitcoin will lose its importance.

At this current status of bitcoin its not possible as we know its the number 1 and trusted crypto of users.

I don't really think that any altcoin can surpass the value of bitcoin now. Not even half of the value of bitcoin any altcoin reached it. But there are possibilities that it will be gone if you are reading history. If history will repeat like what happen in 16th century, about the tulipomania. Where everyone in Holland began to collect tulip bulb and everyone selling it in high price. I hope BTC price up not just a mania. But I watched some videos that it will reach 50,000$ early next year. Let us just hope it will and will not crash.

Currently, I'd say it's not possible for any altcoin to overthrow bitcoin as the king of cryptocurrencies because of the market value of bitcoin.
Considering the chart,  the value of bitcoin is about 8200 usd while the value of the closest competitor, which is eth, is just 376 usd. Looking at the difference in the value, we realize that it will take years of development on the part of these altcoins to overthrow bitcoin.
But if it does happen, as there nothing that's impossible, I will convert some of my bitcoins to the altcoin and make some investments with it.

Title: Re: What if another altcoin surpasses BTC in value?

Anything is possible but Bitcoin currently enjoys a 10X price premium versus its closest competitor. Another coin, such as ETH could potentially overtake in in market-cap one day, but I still think that would be a few years off. Myself, I hold BTC as well as many of the popular alts, so I would probably continue to hold a variety of promising coins including BTC if it were to ever become dethroned.

ETH will likely be the one that over takes BTC in the marketcap. But that doesn't mean that ETH is actually being used for buying/selling goods and services. Many things on the ETH chain are for ICOs and people who raise money through ICOs get paid in ETH when they fundraise for it. This will see the balance of ETH going into programming teams/developers/businesses and other stuff like that.

It may actually create a scenario where in years from now most normal people don't have any balance of ETh because it is too much money. Similar to what would happen to BTC eventually. people sell out of their BTC at a certain point. If BTC is 1 million USD yeah I am selling out of it, taking that 1 million USD and investing in other things and other coins that can go to the moon.

I don't see how this could happen, at least not in the near future. There are some altcoins with good perspective and the value that has chances to rise more but none of them will come close to bitcoin value. For this to happen some other preconditions besides pure price should be filled and that is not that easy and can't happen over night. No other altcoin has the chance unless something really, really bad happens to bitcoin.

Actually once an alt gets near bitcoin's market cap chaos will be all over crypto world.. Just imagine all the FUD here, in the news, around the internet and everywhere!! Panic sellers, panic buyers, bitcoin will lose a lot of its value while that coin gets it on the other hand..
So prepare for the time that day comes, and buy that alt before it beats bitcoin and sell after. At the end it will probably be a bump and dump situation like we saw recently with xrp.

Almost every coin, which at a cost will exceed bitcoin, will also have the signs of a financial bubble, since a crypto currency can not have such a high value in our world. This is not realistic. That is, investing in such coins will be very risky. On the other hand, not every coin of great value has a good opportunity to make a profit. It may already be at the limit of its price opportunity. Therefore, in most cases, small new coins give good profits, which are just beginning to reveal their potential.

Bitcoin is dominating cryptocurrency market since its introduction. Following bitcoin`s path many altcoins get introduced. But bitcoin kept its dominance and popularity intact. Bitcoin has travelled from $1000 to $19000 in less than two years. Bitcoins increased value, increased transactions charges, volatility, its use in illegal activities, and ban by many countries creating a wave of worry among bitcoin investors. As a result many investors by booking their profits shifting their investments. Altcoins are the best options for them, altcoins are relatively cheap, less volatile in nature. In future these altcoins may surpasses bitcoin currency.

I will not surprise if this will happen in decades. There is a possibility that another altcoin can surpass value of BTC if this will happen:
1. If the present problems of bitcoin will not be solved. The problems of bitcoins greatly affect the price of it. Many are switching into another coin.
2. If the community behind bitcoin is the same as the community of the altcoin. Since bitcoin is the first ever cryptocurrency, many trusted this coin already. If this will happen to an altcoin, there is a chance that it will surpass its value.
If another altcoin will surpass BTC in value, to be honest I don't know what to say. If this will happen then bitcoin will plummet, many will sell their bitcoin and then switch into that altcoin.

I believe that that is bound to happen maybe not now or not in the nearest future but it will really happen. Which alts will get the spot, that is also still a mystery because there's plenty of new altcoins that are surfacing and one of them can have great potentials that can contend btc. For me, as long as btc proves to be a good investment and I'm still earning from it I will still keep my coins despite of it being dethroned by other promising alts. By that time I think I've earned enough to buy those alts so there's no need to trade my btc holdings.

The decision to keep or not keep the crypto currency depends on many factors.
That's where in the ranking is it is not the most important factor.
If we are talking about the cost of bitcoin, that is (or were) coins more expensive bitcoin.

Bitcoin had made histroy . It is the first crypto coin to be used and if for any reason an altcoin surpasses its value then so be  it. But bear it in mind that this  will not happen any time soon.

On a long enough timeline, the chances are close to 100% that some new altcoin or system is going to surpass Bitcoin in value.

There is not much you can do about it, other than speculate and try to be one of the first to invest in a new coin.

Well, if there's one coin that probably can surpasses bitcoin it could be ETH. ETH now is becoming more popular and widely use as platform for most ICO that coming in the market but I think it could take some time.

By the way this coin surpasses bitcoin's value check it out: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/42-coin/

If this happens, of course, investors will divert their investment into altcoin
and of course bitcoin will be left behind
But the possibility of bitcoin replacement is very small, ETH although I do not think I can beat bitcoin
Because here what is needed is trust, and bitcoin has it
Even now there are present some potentially good altcoin and still people even trusting there to invest their money, but i think still it is not so easy, because the if we compare any of the altcoin with bitcoin, bitcoin value is increasing more from time to time. in fact bitcoin users are increasing more than any other currency and upto so one this will continue i do not think that any other altcoin have chance to overcome bitcoin. Bitcoin will remain as the kind for a long long time.

That's not possible. Altcoin relies on bitcoin and it is the universal medium for fiat and altcoins. It represents crypto so if any altcoin rises, bitcoin 's price is already far from them so they can't surpass it.

Actually, this is not impossible to happen since it is in nature of cryptocurrencies to be volatile and surpass the value of one another. I believe that every movement and changes of each and every cryptos affect one another. This is why for any altcoin to surpass bitcoin is really possible and could happen if bitcoin's value continue to drop down.

If that would miraculously happen and takeover bitcoin in such a surprising way. Then I think that a lot would jumpship and have to go to that altcoin which would then have an effect in its value more and would increase uniil it becomses inflated that it gets to the point where new people cannot invest into it anymore because of how high it is and then they would experience what bitcoin did with its dips and forks

All altcoins that are operating too long in the market cannot beat bitcoin, how come the new ones can easily defeat them.

Getting ETH to pass bitcoin is a very difficult thing. Bitcoin is used in many different areas, because it carries in its own blockchain technology. This has made bitcoin different from other altcoins and is more user-friendly than other altcoins.
So, I'll keep holding the bitcoin until they come back up. I believe in bitcoin. that is my life.

in my opinion the possibilities are very far away, because in terms of price BTC has a high price compared to other altcoin.
takes a long time to compete with BTC.
I wouldn't be that confident like your because as I look last year eth is only less than a dollar but it soar up to $1500 in just a year. And currently the price of bitcoin is equivalent to 10x of ethereum meaning ethereum could match bitcoin in the near future because it will have more demand because of its function and uses.

I do not see this happening anytime soon. Bitcoin is what everybody thinks when they hear cryptocurrency. The name was barely even scratching the surface of educating the public. To overtake Bitcoin you have to remove all the progress made by saying Bitcoin is the future and that altcoin can serve other purposes. If altcoin exceeds Bitcoin, perhaps the whole market is in a lot of trouble.

Anything is possible but Bitcoin currently enjoys a 10X price premium versus its closest competitor. Another coin, such as ETH could potentially overtake in in market-cap one day, but I still think that would be a few years off. Myself, I hold BTC as well as many of the popular alts, so I would probably continue to hold a variety of promising coins including BTC if it were to ever become dethroned.
everything is possible but at this moment eventhough bitcoim has a big dip at this moment, it very unlikely to happen. bitcoin still enjoys being the number one cryptocurrency. the value is too high for some altcoin at this moment to surpass bitcoin.

In fact, from time to time there are coins that cost more bitkoin, as a rule their number is small or this speculative price is artificial.
It is possible that over time some coins will overtake BTC at a price, but is it an excuse to immediately throw the BTC and buy other coins?
I count so if the coin has already grown, why buy it on the top?
In the crypto currency the surest way to earn looks like this - you study an interesting start-up, look at the price of coins,
take them at a low price, lodge on a purse and forget for two or three years.
Quite possibly among your investments will be projects that overtake bitcoin at a price))

And bitcoin is the only coin that has been tested for years and still survive while other coins or even tokens are not even tested yet. Even many tokes have faulty smart contract.

It can't happen since BTC is here from the beginning, or maybe in a few decades so it's easy to see it coming.
Everybody here on this forum has this opinion. This is an established fact because bitcoin investment has always proved to be lucrative and fetched the best results!! Bitcoin was in its golden era last year and not only the last year, but it has remained the king of the crypto world from a very long time.

So I also hold the same opinion that no other crypto coin has that potential as bitcoin has. And right now I don't see any other alt coin replacing the bitcoin. Because bitcoin has set such a benchmark that is not easy to be touched!!

It could happen if money from btc is moved to another altcoin and the marketcap will show this development which means bitcoin will be displaced from its number one spot but having being on the market the longest I would want to see bitcoin go all the way as the king.

It is very unlikely to happen, just because of the fact that bitcoin is the first of the cryptos and any further ones are just shitcoins/copies of bitcoin outright. There is no one any of them possesses more value than bitcoin will, but there is always an uncertainty, as this is human nature afterall that determines the value of these cryptos, and well, its pretty unlikely, as I said, but the tables might just turn at any moment, there is really no way of predicting other than keeping an eye out on the news.

It is possible but I don't think it will happen since Bitcoin is the most popular and the most common crypto currency in the world. There is also that Bitcoin has a greater value than other digital currencies, well it is the first digital currency.

Bitcoin has set a mark as the first Cryptocurrency coin and also first to hit close to 20k$! Its present down toll is also having a major effect on other coins and the Cryptocurrency market at large. So, before any coin can surpass the bitcoin price, it can be for years though.

While in the near future there can not be such that any coin overtakes bitcoin by capitalization or by value. Bitcoin is still inaccessible for any coins. Therefore, in this plan, he has nothing to fear. In addition, given the planned improvements in bitcoin, it is expected that its popularity will soon be in line with the leader of the crypto currency, and then all these assumptions will be given by themselves.

This is very impossible for now that some altcoins surpass the value of bitcoin because bitcoin is the first and the most crytocurrency throughout the whole world. For example eth altcoin is always the second place of crytocurrency and not yet happen in the history that it surpass bitcoin value since from the beginning of crypto world. There have already been altcoins with a higher unit value than Bitcoin, and there have been several altcoins with a higher market cap than Bitcoin ~ it's absolutely meaningless.

There are a lot of implications actually but if the value surpasses bitcoin, then it would replace bitcoin as the reigning cryptocurrency in the market. There are a lot of factors to consider especially if an altcoin surpasses bitcoin in value. If in the price graph it showed tremendous skyrocketing of its price, then people would prefer that altcoin compared to others, thus increasing its demand and supply in the market. Basically, what will happen to that altcoin will be the thing that is HAPPENING CURRENTLY into bitcoin.
A lot of professional market/trader analysts would discuss and give their opinions, banks would shift their focus into that altcoin and governments would see it again as a boon or a bane towards the economy.

I think it's not easy to surpass bitcoin although we can't say that no other crypto will, because in crypto world there are many competitors aiming to be the highest value of crypto. So if there are so many cryptocurrency then it would be hard to surpass bitcoin because the popularity is devide.

Typically, the price of bitcoin is directly proportional to the price of altcoins. So when the price of bitcoin increases expect the prices of altcoin to increase most of the time. Though sometimes there are occurrences where the price of an altcoin increases while the price of bitcoin decreasing. But you are right that it would be difficult for some altcoins to catch-up with bitcoin in terms of its price.

Btc will always be number one in the term of price and it's development. Whether the technology development or some other developments. Some people actually said that the eth can suprass btc because the their devs want to develop the eth protocol. It will become new, but I think that will never happen. I always believe in btc and the price of btc will indeed always going up and increase. There are also people who said that btc is just the beginning of the new era and it will replace by something bigger and better, I do not know about that.

Altcoins won't rely as much on BTC price if that happens, there will be shift.
Price Volatility will be more unpredictable among Altcoin's and It is already a wild west It will turn even more extreme.
It will also depend if the new King is strong like Bitcoin and maintains its no.1 position.
but geez of a there a bunch of coins taking and fighting for that number 1 position the volatility is going to turn on its head.

People don't realize It is actually a good thing that BTC maintain's its strenght at the very top.
But off course no one can say intially there is going to be extreme volatility if other alt coins start surpass bitcoin
but then like everything else the market will try to adjust to this new scenario
I really can't say if It would be good or bad.
Would love to hear other people's thoughts

First of all, I don't think this is a possibility. Bitcoin, as a pioneer, has a more complete system. It wants to surpass it as a reform. If there is a currency that can surpass it, I believe the industry will More powerful.

I think that no other altcoin surpasses BTC in value since BTC is the first cryptocurrency exist. If there will be chances of the existence of another altcoin, then I guess they can't still surpass BTC.

Bitcoin is what everyone thinks of when they hear crypto currency. Another coin, such as ETH could potentially overtake in in market-cap one day, but I still think that would be a few years off. Myself, I hold BTC as well as many of the popular alts, so I would probably continue to hold a variety of promising coins including BTC if it were to ever become dethroned.

If another altcoin surpasses bitcoin in value I think bitcoin can also surpasses it. Even if another altcoin surpasses bitcoin I will still be working on it because for me no other cryptocurrency is better than bitcoin. We all know that if they hear cryptocurrency the first think comes to their mind is bitcoin because it is the father of all cryptocurrency.

What if? Evolution happens. Bitcoin was the first one, it is pioneer and it is still very popular, widely adopted. But it has its use case and some other alts have other use cases that may be of more value to the world, and to the ecosystem. Prices are reflective of the network value. If another altoin surpasses Bitcoin, it would only mean that it has more  value and nothing else. Does not mean that Bitcoin is not valuable anymore. It will still be widely used.
