Title: Do I still own BCC?
Post by: KarmaUK on September 29, 2017, 03:41:19 PM
Hi,

I had a Bitcoin wallet (I use Bitcoin core) before the fork, let's say 0.5. A couple of week ago, I sold my 0.5 back to Coinbase.

Do I still own BCC? I've just opened my wallet in Bitcoin ABC but it's not showing any BCC.

Sorry if this is a dumb question :)

Yes, you do. Check balance using eg: https://bitinfocharts.com/bitcoin%20cash/

Thanks for that. What would I enter in to the search?

Your address (the one which should be holding bcc )  ... this is to just check if you have them.

I created a new receiving address and entered that, but it doesn't show anything.

Then no bcc on that address.

You need to enter the one which was holding BTC during the fork time.

Did you checked your wallet address on Bitcoin Cash block explorer? If you can see BCH on your wallet address there, it means that you still own it. If you don't see BCH on Bitcoin ABC wallet, try to use other wallet like Electron Cash.

Just download Electron Cash via https://electroncash.org/ (https://electroncash.org/) and upload your wallet back up file.  Because BCC has replay protection, even though you spent your Bitcoin, your Bitcoin Cash are still in the account as long as you transferred after Aug 1.

If you need help in the process, I found this video helpful.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqBkJwYKDKQ&t=343s

its not a dumb question! many people are not aware that they own bcc, so if this could help someone its great

That's correct. Also with wallets like Core it's not that easy to find your BCC, because you don't know which addresses were used to send your coins. Sometimes people have many in one wallet and when they send their coins to an exchange it's taken from all of them at once. This means that if OP has now an empty wallet, he needs to check which addresses had funds on them before the fork and then manually take his private key from qt wallet and move it to a BCC wallet.

this could be a real hassle for someone that dont know how to do it, we should try to make a guide and get it pinned by the mods

If Im remembering right a wallet like mycelium would be easier to recover then core.  This forum itself had instructions about BCC around about August 1st.  The main warning was not to leave bitcoin in a wallet used in contact with the BCC chain at all, so you are ok on that point

Heres the link to the old news and the guide from there also: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2017191.0

You have to find your balance from a link that you were using with those transactions, that will show you you're real BCC number.
