Title: [2017-10-01] Debunked: Rumor that Amazon Will Accept Bitcoin “Fake News”
Post by: moriskarlov on October 01, 2017, 04:34:54 PM
A rumor has been circulating that claims Amazon will decide to accept bitcoin within the near future, potentially as early as October. Unfortunately, this rumor is based on a misleading blog post and is almost certainly false.

The Rumor: Amazon Will Accept Bitcoin

The report, which was first published by conservative news blog Squawker Media, cites a newsletter purportedly written by entrepreneur and stock researcher James Altucher.

In the newsletter, the author claims complete assurance that Amazon will begin accepting bitcoin payments, initiating a massive disruption in the monetary sector:

''I am certain that Amazon WILL ACCEPT Bitcoin. They have no choice. And this will be the tipping point that will create massive generational wealth unlike we’ve ever seen before.''

Once this happens, “we’ll see a buying frenzy like never before,” the newsletter continues. “It’ll be like a Black Friday crowd at best buy.”

Moreover, the author speculates that Amazon could make the announcement as early as October 26, which is the date of its next earnings call.

It was an obvious fake rumor, but yet a lot of people here went nuts and started celebrating it already. This perfectly shows how easily whatever entity can influence people here with false information. Back in the days merchant acceptance would result in a green candle, but the market doesn't care about it anymore -- that's the result of a maturing market. I however would like to see a large group of people mature as well and stop taking fud and false information for granted so easily.

I don't thin it was that obvious that it was a fake rumor. The market has been evolving and tech giants, like google, facebook, and even microsoft are integrating an API to facilitate the use of bitcoin in normal purchases. Merchants need to start using it of course, but this proves that these big companies understand that there is a market for this.
As far as amazon goes, overstock.com is already accepting bitcoin, and there are some other trading goods sites that accept it, so they will probably accept it eventually.
I'm not sure this is a bad thing or a good thing. The truth is that the network is not mature enough to handle mass adoption and a huge number of transactions right now, so I don't mind waiting a little longer for news like this.
