Title: Improve mining performance?
Post by: sebastian5 on October 09, 2017, 09:40:14 AM
Hi experts of mining,

I have just started to attempt to mine ETH.
I am wondering if you can give me some advices on how to improve my performance please.

My specs are:
CPU: amd ryzen 5
GPU: 2 x  MSI RX 580 8GB
RAM: 16gb ddr 4

this is in a normal pc case with side panel inserted and case closed, so this is not a mining rig with 5 or more gpu.

I am using ethminer and these are some screenshots:

as you can see my mh/s is very bad.
I know one rx580 8gb should mine at 30.2 mh/s (at least) so I should have 60.4 mh/s but I only have 40 mh/s.
1) Can you help me to get to 60 mh/s please? Right now I am using latest drivers from amd website.

These are my temps, with gpu-z and openhardware:

I have read that "safe" temps for gpu are around 90°C (for gaming I think, I dont know about mining), mine are 80°C and 72°C
2) Are these temperatures good?
3) Is there a way to reduce power draw?

Thanks ^^  :) and if you have more things to suggest please say them, I really want to get better at doing this as I am a noob.

Regards

You need to adjust ram timing by rom flashing. Use atiflash tool.
80C seems quite high even for mining. It's safe below 65C. Fix your fan speed at 70 or 80% using afterburner.

Actually to be safe, temperature needs to be below 75c which is 15c below or 20% from most standard 90c limit.

I'd rather recommend  keeping temps below 65c than 75c, I had 390x running for 3-4 days once at 72-75c and it never saw the light of the day again,

I started mining the same way as you are now 5 years ago with 2x hd5970 inside a case, and oh boy, were those cards resilient to heat, 75c 24/7 load working like a charm, you can't do that nowadays with newer/smaller fab. process gpus, they'll degrade & break down so fast, do yourself a favor and buy an usb powered 1x to 16x gpu riser for one of those cards and place it out of the case, and leave the other one inside, you'll see massive temp difference.

and yeah, reducing power load is recommended for long term mining, undervolting your cards and/or setting pow limit slider to negative values to a desired effect

happy mining!
