BTW, there's a recent surge in formerly established and rather quiet accounts suddenly going completely and utterly rogue.

Now I was thinking about this and what I came up with was that this might be related to either the phase of the moon or biorhythm. What do you think?

I would ask the same thing.  It's not identity theft; it's identity switch.  But in some ways it amounts to the same thing.  What's up with this?  It makes me totally ignore who I am reading or talking to because I have no trust in the continuity of the person's identity.

It's okay to do this, but not okay to post a link to thesilkrdotcom.  Scratch my head.  Go figure.

Where to claim these free XRP?

Would be interested in answer as well. I have no ripples so far but the ripple giveaway is only for accounts older than 19 February

There was a thread somewhere about a new giveaway to those who registered before May.

EDIT: Wrong topic.

I am offering 0.02BTC+ for jr member accounts older than 1 month.

Looking for a lot of accounts right now, also buying Sr/Hero member accounts (paying more than jr members of course)

Please PM.

So you're offering the equivalent of about $2.50 for an account - that offer isn't really "grabbing" me.

where is there an offer of 3000 XRP (nearer 0.5 BTC today)?

I saw an offer for 300 or something.

People will make GPG accounts and sign messages that really need proven authenticy. For example here is my GPG sig: http://bitcoin-otc.com/viewgpg.php?nick=wachtwoord

Ok getting past the newbie jail, but that's not really that much of an argument.
Giveaways that are usless to the account owner, meh. A slight argument, but nothing in face of the disadvantages of making the life for scammers easier.

A public/private cryptography pair. If you want to understand bitcoins, you should really first understand cryptography. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public-key_cryptography)

Indeed nice to read. Also check out: http://www.gnupg.org/gph/en/manual.html

Practically speaking, because of my public/private key pair (of which the public one is public and the private one only known to me):

1) Sign a message, proving I am the author
2) Someone can encrypt a message using my public key that only I can decrypt (event he sender cannot!)

All this requires me to keep my private key secure though :) (This is the same system that is used in Bitcoin)

Okay; the Wiki article is easy enough to understand.  But it still -- at least to me -- does not explain why someone would buy a bitcointalk account.  To generate gpg key pairs??  Why?  What's the point?  To impersonate a board member?

No. I said that if (some) people start selling forums accounts, everyone will start using pgp-sigs to prove they are who they claim to be.

Okay...sure.  Self-protection.  But this still doesn't answer my original question of why someone would buy accounts.

Yeah..... Why is selling accounts allowed?

So they can scam people by creating fake enthusiasm about new stuff (e.g. alt-coins).
That's what comes to my mind, and I won't be a part of it.

And if you have 100 different accounts, you can do these "get 3BT for pimping us" things and fill it with all your fake accounts.

But I said I was leaving, so that's all I'll say.
Let the kids have their fun.

I think AliceWonder has nailed it.  I don't see any other reason that someone would buy accounts.  They are buying the account holder's reputation, for whatever that may be worth.  A reputation is, after all, a thing of great value that it takes a long time to build.  It is worth something.  So, it's no wonder that there are people willing to buy it.  That is to be expected.

The real culprit in the transaction is the seller.  He takes all of the trust he has built up and sells it to god-knows-who.  It can pretty much be assumed that the buyer is unscrupulous, as he intends to pose publicly as something which he is not.  So, why would someone sell their account, knowing -- or at least subconsciously suspecting -- that this is the case?  I submit that the answer to that question lies in the seller's heart.  Ask him why he has decided to sell out and quit the human race?

The board moderators cannot really stop this, and shouldn’t be expected to.  But, in my opinion, they should not openly permit it.

This problem is obviously not unique to this board.  Quite frankly, I never thought about this until this thread was started.  It has opened my eyes.  Sure, I often have several accounts on the same forum; for various reasons.  But it never occurred to me to sell one of them.

Wachtwoord has offered a solution: identity verification through pgp-signs.  It sounds plausible.  Perhaps the moderators could look into this, and implement it as part of the account registration process.
