It's a good idea to use supplemental fans, like a $20 box fan to keep good air circulation and remove heat around the cards. That makes the card fans work more efficiently, so you don't have to turn them up high. Which prolongs the life of the fans. It's also much cheaper and easier to replace a box fan than multiple card fans. If you have more than 2-3 rigs in a room, you will probably need to look for ways to exhaust the air, so that it's not just circulating the same hot air.

For example on my RX 480 I have the fan speed manually set to 65% so the temperature stays around the 70 degrees mark.

Post by: Za1n on October 11, 2017, 01:47:40 PM GPU temperature is the most important factor to consider and you will want to keep that right around or under 70C for sure. The fan speed only becomes an issue if you need to maintain 80-100% all the time to keep your GPUs at or under 70C. If they spin up once in awhile it is not that big of a deal, but if you are running your fans at 100% all the time they are going to quickly fail and will need to be replaced. If this is the case you will need to try to increase the separation of your GPUs from each other, relocate your rig to a cooler environment, or introduce more airflow into the space. The later can be achieved simply by adding a box fan as someone posted above.
Usually all this comes down to good airflow in and around your rigs. While box fans are good for one or two rigs, if you have many rigs in a space (room, garage, shed) you will need to exhaust the hot air out of the space in a efficient manner. I have rigs setup in my garage which gets to over 100F (38C) in the summer, but I also have good airflow so the rigs stay in the 60C range and GPU fans are running under 50-60% most of the time. Open a door and have a fan blowing out the warm air.

I ran my AMDs at 70% fan and a steady 83C for months with 0 issues. At night I would turn up the fans alittle, but during the day they would hover around 70%.
