Title: Proposing two bitcoin currency symbols; % and *
Post by: btcusr on June 05, 2013, 10:49:47 AM

Hi, this post is not for fun.

I am proposing two more bitcoin currency symbols; % and *

I was just checking key board symbols,

% inspiration;  some symbol that could be constructed with 1s and 0s. % is just that.
* inspiration; from this we can get all alphabets of X, B and T. somehow. how??  ::)

example,
  %567
  *234

ugly? please feel free to ignore.  8)

There are already more than a dozen symbols proposed already. :(

I am yet to add these symbols to, https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_symbol (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Bitcoin_symbol)

% - Its a percent symbol, you cant use a percent symbol. People would get it confused with percents.
* - It doesnt look like a currency symbol, people would likely think 'what the heck is that?'. most currency symbols are i think recognizable even if youve never seen that particular one before.

At this point in the game, no amount of talking is going to change what symbol is used. it will likely always be some variant of a 'B' with lines through it. Whether official or not I think its what people are going to use, it just make sense.

You are picking on symbols that already have meaning. That doesn't work. It needs to be a new symbol for a new currency.

Do we not have a currency symbol already? -> ฿

the capital B with a vertical line is very very close to the thailand baht symbol, which could bring on problems later.

Yes, it is the Unicode for the Baht, I'd forgotten that.

There is the ℬ = Bernoulli function.. and it's one of the limited ones that is visible without having special fonts installed.

Sort of the same kind of problems that Canada has when they use the $ sign for the Canadian dollar (in my opinion: not an issue)

Perhaps we should just get Thailand to use Bitcoins.

thats just an idea, a symbol / alphabet which could be made only using 1s and 0s.

there are many alphabets that fits the above requirement too; like, Q, D, P, d, B or, θ, etc.

anyone is designing bitcoin symbol can consider the above concept.

---

Anyone is designing for XBT symbol, can start with *

just an idea.

Ive always held the opinion of "to hell with it". Lets use it and if bitcoin becomes large enough then it wont be an issue, it will just be the sign that gets used. Not like anyone would see a price listed on Amazon in BTC and start wondering "is this for bitcoin or for the thai baht?".

Even with two symbols that are the same, im sure they could easily guess which is which by the value difference.

A loaf of bread costs which of the following?
BTC 0.038
BTC 152.65

None of the above.

In future a pizza will cost BTC 0.00001  ;D

Also.. why does that nice symbol above not appear when I copy it?

Lol maybe i should have mentioned it, But both values are the same, One is the Thai Baht and the other is bitcoin. Nobody would confuse the two.

I propose two new symbols too: 1 and 2
Can't be more practical:
Quote
How many do I owe you?
210
Quote
How many do you owe me?
100.01
