Title: A small Pacific island will now let you pay for citizenship with bitcoin.
Post by: akamit on October 12, 2017, 02:58:49 PM
It feels awesome nowadays to hear that bitcoin is now getting accepted in many unexpected things.
Few days ago I read in this board, that a university is accepting bitcoin payment as a tuition fee.
And now a island is accepting bitcoin to provide citizenship.

Only heard and read about Vanuatu on my high school encyclopedias. It seems that this would be capitalized by rich investors who only cares about money and not really in preserving the culture and heritage of the country. Nevertheless, it's cool to pay for your citizenship in bitcoins and be a part of innovation in a small country that would soon be flocked with different other people because of bitcoin.

I don't really enjoy these type of news nowadays we all know now bitcoin can't replace fiat or even international currency. Governments and shops allow to make payments using it won't make big of difference the price won't increasw because of this, these might he useful to very few people only and nowdays many don't sell their coins for these type of services

Whatever happened to that island some rich guy created to establish a free government experiment?
Recall a 60 minutes special and then rumblings of in fighting among the people and then nothing.

Recall reading a article similar to this 2 years ago here as well that turned out to be a scam of sorts.

If I remember correctly, the Caribbean nation of St Kitts had a similar option a few years back. Roger Ver got his St Kitts passport after paying for the citizenship using Bitcoins. But after a few months, they removed the option of Bitcoin payment. I haven't heard about the Vanuatu citizenship program, but it looks reasonably priced when compared to the other options.

Vanuatu is the small Pacific Island in question! Well this is a good adoption from their side, they will increase their population, maybe increase their economy also if the island has it's paradisiac things to show!  And for an experiment, well this one is a good experiment, and if successful, might make other countries follow it's example, making good publicity for BTC!

I suspect that you would want to be somewhat desperate for citizenship to pay 58 BTC to be a citizen of Vanuatu. Even if you were on the run, I suspect that there are some more "convenient" places to shop for citizenship.   ;)

This is great to see in the past there were a few places which accepted bitcoin as citizenship but, nothing to the extent of this. In fact, there was one rum our of a ship accepting residents for Bitcoin, I can't seem to remember how that turned out or if they got it off the ground or not.

They're a few places in the world where this is already possible!

You think the fact that they'll accept bitcoin for payment will be a driver to bring random bitcoin supporters to all of a sudden decide to get such a citizenship?

That goes against all logic that exists in our market system.

People making buying decisions based on what they need or want, then they evaluate if the price is fair, then they decide what form of currency to use.

The form of currency accepted rarely drives buying decisions, and certainly not for something someone didn't want or need in the first place!

I really like the fact that they officially accept bitcoin as a proper manner of payment. It doesn't matter if this will drive more people to purchasing a citizenship or not, what matters is the fact that you're able to pay for it using bitcoins. Another step in the right direction.
You're able to buy a nice condo with bitcoin and now citizenship. What's next?

Give it time: when this island starts to be populated by a bunch of bitcoiners expect the US Navy conquering it soon. It sounds like a good idea but smart bitcoiners need to understand how the world works. Nobody will like rich bitcoiners in the future, so better to stay off the grid while enjoying the crypto life.
At least these are my two satoshis.

Let's be serious, a country that ask for 58 bitcoins to be its citizen is not a good country to her people. 58 bitcoins, this is enormous, I worked for 10 years (my best productive years) and what I would had now (if I haven't sold my 0.54 bitcoins this summer) were 0.71 bitcoin.
So I would have to work for another 580 years (with what I am paid now) to have 58 bitcoins to pay for the citizenship in a Pacific country where I do not have the possibility to go because the planes of my country (a medium decent country from Europe) do not fly there. :)

I've heard of Vanuatu in so good context. I know that some people who wanted to avoid paying taxes registered their firms and cars there and were laundering money. So having that in mind maybe buying their citizenship with Bitcoins is not so good promotion for Bitcoin. I think some criminals could use that possibility and bring more bad reputation for Bitcoin.

this is good news because if they accept bitcoin there it is possible that payment methods for others can use bitcoin and if it succeeds then maybe they will make their own coins (now that happens a lot in some countries by making their own coins).

Really cool to see this but its a shame that many more people dont do this for smaller prices as living on a island is really for the rich.

But again the opportunity for investors and capitalists is there only waiting to be grabbed. A capitalist's mindset is to get something that could sell before anyone else takes it for themselves and get profit from it. Admit it, this era is no longer about the regular needs of the old society; we're talking about fancy antennae hats, dumb gimmicks and nonsense things that existed just because someone invented it and made it a trend. This could also happen in Vanuatu, which is a lovely group of islands sitting in the Pacific and is a great spot for tourists to hang out. Imagine paying with your bitcoins to be a citizen AND an investor at the same time.

You're right nonetheless; it could be a waste of money to some, but to the opportunists who have the money, it doesn't matter.

This seems very cool you can see by this kind of stuff that bitcoin is getting acknowledged by the world slowly but it is and that is why i believe that how earlier you start how more profit you are going to make.

You are actually right which this is already be capitalized by rich investors which i can say they are too wise to use bitcoin on such thing but well this is their own idea and somehow do really help out the adoption rate of bitcoin and its really glad to hear or see that bitcoin can really be used on this kind of thing which you can pay for your citizenship.

It's interesting to see a few people/groups that see the potential of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and are breaking from the traditional in this way. If enough people take the leap of faith, cryptocurrencies will become mainstream rather than a radical idea.

The big gains over the past year for Bitcoin and altcoins combined with the resilience of Bitcoin will make people realize that it's not just a fad but it is a technological breakthrough that's here to stay.

This will make the value of many cryptocurrencies really show big profits going forward and governments will begin to not resist it as much.

Of course it didn't materialize.
People who usually are starting a "nation" with no government find themselves pretty fast they don't have a clue how to install a water pump not speaking about a working infrastructure.

And the last project I remember was to be set between Serbia and Croatia, a zone full of mines that will be removed by 2022.

It is not intended for normal people and of course not for europeans.
Those  that are interested in the citizenship are from Asia and Africa because a Vanatu passport will get you visa free in the Schengen  Area.
But is a bit tricky situation because Vanatu does not recognize a second citizenship.

Meet your next door neighbors in Vanuatu.

Good luck running from the law and hiding in Vanuatu. You would be easy to locate and most of the funding for the country comes from the French, Brits and murricans.
