Title: [ANN] Launch-time charts - 57 currencies - cryptometer.org
Post by: canoe on June 05, 2013, 07:19:05 PM
Notice a lot of coins being released lately?  :)

If you're interested in an at-a-glance view of what happened to the blockchain during launch, I've generated charts of several metrics for 15 currencies and I'll be adding more.

http://cryptometer.org

This was a project for me to learn more about bitcoin, python, and javascript.  A python program connects with the daemon and writes out the javascript for the charts.

Charts include:
- number of blocks generated per time period
- number of blocks generated per time period (percent of target rate)
- difficulty
- network hashrate
- minted currency
- total supply
- number of transactions per time period

Depending on how old the blockchain is, there can be up to three versions of the above charts:
- Each hour for the first 96 hours.
- Each day for the first 90 days.
- Each week or month for the whole blockchain.

It should be fun and educational to compare these charts for different currencies.  Let me know if you want your favorite (or least favorite) currency added.  Please include a link to the announcement thread for me.  The list so far:
- Bitcoin
- Litecoin
- BBQCoin
- PPCoin
- Terracoin
- Feathercoin
 -Smallchange
- Chinacoin

very nice, we can see CNC sucked, the dev must have messed up with diff adjustment, and it's dead, lol

add more coins, I'd like to see PWC, JKC, FST, HYC, etc, why the heck AMC is there, it's a heavily pre mined garbage.

Bitbar charts are hilarious. Still baffles me that people purchase that shit.

I didn't start mining it until after block 3000.  The low starting diff is why the price dropped rapidly.  Once this supply switches to stronger hands, which it is doing, the value will rise over time.  I think it will be around for a long time and will continue to keep a portion of my BTC in it.

Digitalcoin is up.  It looks like the increasing rewards did help keep the total supply chart more linear.  But what happened in hour 2?

Added Namecoin.  That was tricky.  It used different (older?) rpc calls and I had to learn to calculate difficulty from the "bits" field of the block.  (like this: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Difficulty) (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Difficulty))

Added Bytecoin too.

Cryptsy dev support DGC, they bumped GLD to secondary market even though it had the greatest volume.

Even on LTC market, it's volume is second only to DGC.

Add GLDCoin btw:

Novacoin added.

There will be a bit of inaccuracy since I'm not differentiating between proof-of-work and proof-of-stake blocks yet.  This will affect the later dates more than the earlier dates.  The difficulty will show on the chart a bit lower than it really is.  (It's the weighted average of the proof-of-work difficulty and the proof-of-stake difficulty.)  And network hashrate may show a little too high since the software thinks the blocks being found were because of work the network was doing.  It's on my TODO list to fix this by handling the stake blocks separately.

Stablecoin added.
I hate to disappoint you, but it doesn't look pretty.  The genesis block has a coinbase transaction worth 1250000SBC.  That's 80% of the supply.

Total Supply seems to be the graph that shows very clearly where pre and instamines took place (regardless of the stated reason) This is visually (and very clearly in most cases) seen in the Total Supply chart.  Would you be willing to consider making the Total Supply graph the one you see at the top?

Ixcoin charts are up.
http://cryptometer.org/ixcoin_60_month_charts.html

You can see a classic premine here.  For the first two months (May, June-ish), block generation is slow.  That's probably because the pre-miners weren't doing it full-time.  Then there is a month were it was dead (July-ish).  Then in month four (August-ish), it must have been announced.  The block generation hits 373% of target due to the interest.  And the most coins are minted that month.  Then things are stable for a long time.

At the end of the chart, at Month 23 and 24 (around march and april this year) you can see difficulty and network hashrate shoot way up and block generation hits 180% of target.  What's that about?  ASICs!

Total Supply seems to be the graph that shows very clearly where pre and instamines took place (regardless of the stated reason) This is visually (and very clearly in most cases) seen in the Total Supply chart.  Would you be willing to consider making the Total Supply graph the one you see at the top?

For the order of the charts, I tried to keep the charts grouped together by the data behind them, putting secondary info after primary info.  For example, total supply data is generated from the mint data so those charts are in that order.  Similarly, network hashrate is generated from the number of blocks and the difficulty.  Everything is affected by that first chart so I'd like to keep it first.  If I can figure out how to get two different scales on a chart, then I'll probably combine some charts and you won't have to scroll so much.  You may be right.  I may be too much of an obsessed mathematician.  I'll keep considering the order.  But keep in mind, everyone isn't always checking on premine / instamine.  On the page with the entire blockchain, that first chart is a good indicator of the health of the currency (or the effectiveness of the difficulty algorithm) over time.  There's a lot of interesting things to learn beyond when the most currency was generated.

I have several ideas to improve the presentation of the site.  In the future, I want to implement the ability to make custom charts with multiple currencies and link straight to them.  That's going to require a redesign of my software since it will have to generate the page on the fly.  Right now, those are all static pages.

For now, I'm just trying to keep up with the new coin requests.  It's probably the most important thing.  I think that will slow down eventually and I'll be able to implement other features.

You are doing a fantastic job, and I think this is one of the most valuable sites to date that has been created showing comparable data between the different alt coins.  I didn't bother to state this before throwing out my random suggestion, and hope it didn't supercede how much value I think you are providing.

:D

Not forgotten.  I'll get to it.  It'll probably require some code changes to handle the demurrage properly.

should add stablecoin, the graphs will look pretty.. best launch of any coin so far

Stablecoin added.
I hate to disappoint you, but it doesn't look pretty.  The genesis block has a coinbase transaction worth 1250000SBC.  That's 80% of the supply.

On the contrary I think it looks beautiful, aside from the genesis block and the launch spike everythings going just about perfect. Smoothest chart i've seen.

I think that "Last 96 hours" and "Last 90 days" addition would be useful.

I hear ya.  That *would* be useful but it also requires all those currency daemons running all the time.  My server definitely can't handle that.

Eventually, I'll work on ways to keep the charts more up to date:
- Getting the process more automated.
- Perhaps I can set it up to automatically cycle through the daemons so there is only one running at a time.  At least then, the info would be up to date within a few hours perhaps.

Right now, I'm focusing on getting the beginnings of all the currencies.  If something is getting out of date and you'd like to see the more recent data, just poke me to update it.  That's much easier than adding another currency BTW.

Hey,

Btw, thanks for the great service.

The current situation:
So far, I've focused on getting the data from the beginning of the blockchains.  It never changes so that's simple.  For recent data, charts are updated manually when people ask me or when I'm interested.  It involves starting the daemon, letting it sync, and running my program.  For now, just tell me here which currencies you're interested in.  I just updated Stablecoin and Digitalcoin for you.

Medium Term Plan:
More automation.  Updates more often.

Long Term Plan:
Automatic updates.  It's complicated to do because I can't run all the daemons all the time.

Yes, that would likely be do to the mishap with the people that were trusted to compile the binaries not being trustworthy at all.

It was a mistake on the devs part, rather than an intention to pre-mine.

I've added an N chart for YAC on my charts website.  Like the difficulty chart, each value is a weighted average over the time period.  So on days when N changes, it is a value between the old and new values of N.

I've also added another chart which I'm calling "Normalized Network Hashrate".  I noticed that you can't use the regular network hashrate chart as an indication of how much computing power is being applied to YAC over time as you can with other currencies.  This is because whenever N changes the amount of computing power necessary to achieve a given hashrate increases.  The "Normalized Network Hashrate" chart tries to solve that problem as follows:

From this data http://yacexplorer.tk/graphs.htm#tech it appears that, for both CPUs and GPUs, each doubling of N causes approximately a halving of hashrate especially for larger N.  Therefore, assuming a constant computing power, N*Hashrate remains relatively constant for different values of N.

Proof by induction:
N*Hashrate
= (1) * N * Hashrate
= 2 * (1/2) * N * Hashrate
= 2 * N * (1/2) * Hashate
= [2 * N]  *  [(1/2) * Hashrate]
But that's the next N multiplied by it's hashrate.

Also, N*Hashrate would be linearly affected by computing power (from the Hashrate).  So N*(Network Hashrate) could be used as a representation of network computing power over time that isn't affected by changes in N.  But those actual numeric values aren't very meaningful.  To improve this, I used N/32*(Network Hashrate).  That can interpreted as the approximate hashrate of the network if N were still equal to it's starting value of 32.

Thanks for putting up Noirbits. I was under the impression there was no premine, however 560 NRB is a pretty insignificant amount. Doubt it was intentional.

I'd be interested in seeing Cosmoscoin there as well, another coin with little or no premine.

Added primecoin.

http://cryptometer.org/primecoin_96_hour_charts.html
http://cryptometer.org/primecoin_90_day_charts.html

I left the "Network Hashrate" chart in even though it's a bit weird for this coin.  I haven't done the work yet to make it "Network prime-chains per second" as it should be.  I'd need to know the chances of a number being the origin for a Cunningham chain of length D (difficulty).  I'll need to do more research before working on that.

So right now, network hashrate is just showing how many hashes/sec would be necessary to obtain that many blocks at that difficulty *for bitcoin*.  It's not useless.  The primecoin paper indicates that the primecoin difficulty linearly affects prime-chain finding probability just as bitcoin's difficulty linearly affects it's block finding probability.  So my chart is simply off by some constant factor -- the proportions are accurate but don't pay attention to the actual numbers.

(Edit: ignore "Network Hashrate" chart for now.  It's not useful.)

Transaction/days chart is a bit misleading since it include the transaction used to mint the block.
So an increase in transaction could just be an increase in block generation.

You should remove the transactions corresponding to block reward generation.
This way it would be more representative of real transactions on the network.

But great work anyway !

Hi All,

I've been away from working on the site for a while but I'm getting back at it again:

1. Over the past week, I started updating all the charts.  I started at the top and now I'm at nibble. I'll keep working my way down the list.  This is requiring tons of re-compiling because a lot of the daemons were updated.  Soon everything should be relatively up to date.  A lot of the currencies are older than 90 days now so the most recent info is in the "All weeks" charts.

2. I've tried to add all the currencies that were requested to the first post.  Let me know if I missed yours.  Since I'm falling behind, I think I will switch to adding currencies based on network hashrate rather than first come first served.

3. The suggestion by SlyWax to separate the coinbase transactions from normal transactions is great and I will do that.

4. Noticed some donations: 2MNC and 50WDC.   Thanks!

I have not taken the demurrage into account yet.  This means the total supply chart is slightly too high.  Since the currency is about a year old, the chart should be approximately 5% lower at the end.  The demurrage is probably based on blocks and not time so to get a precise value, I'll have to look at the algorithm in the Freicoin code.  That's on my todo list now.

In other news, I'm doing another round of updates on the other currencies.

Wondering where to point your ASICs?  I added these 8 currencies:

- Zetacoin ZET
- Tigercoin TGC
- AsicCoin ASC
- eMark DEM
- Unobtanium UNO
- Betacoin BET
- JouleCoin XJO
- FireFlyCoin FFC

And of course I updated the charts for the old guys: BTC, NMC, IXC, PPC, TRC, and BTE.

http://cryptometer.org

It seems to me that some of the new coins have a problem with their progressive difficulty algorithm.  They are never hitting their advertised block generation rate.  Rather, they are hitting a different rate and being very consistent about it.  I don't think it's a serious problem because the block generation rate is very stable through increasing and decreasing network hashrates.  But it is not the predicted rate.  If you look at the hourly charts, it looks like the difficulty gets into some sort of alternating loop.  My first guess would be that the window of previous blocks it looks at is too small.

Zetacoin:    Advertised: 30 seconds,   Actual: ~22 seconds
Tigercoin:   Advertised: 45 seconds,   Actual: ~60 seconds
Unobtanium: Advertised: 3 minutes,  Actual: ~48 seconds
FireFlyCoin: Advertised: 60 seconds,  Actual: ~27 seconds

Perhaps those devs should have a look at that.  Or just do some re-branding?

Also, adding these to the request list:
- LeadCoin LDC
- Quark QRK (was already there)
- Frozen FZ

Could you add MemoryCoin (MMC).

They used a bad parameter at the beginning which resulted in quite a big funny fluctuation, they then changed the algorithm, it's smooth now. Could be interesting.

Yes, that's interesting.  You can see the fluctuation on the first chart.  I guess they hard-forked at Hour 71?  Sounds stressful!  I'm going to read that giant thread and see what parameter they changed.

I found the fix in github.  They replaced the entire algorithm.  It's not a simple parameter change.  I also compared the old algorithm in MemoryCoin with the current algorithms in Unobtanium and Zetacoin.  They are the same.  So that's the problem and how to fix it.

https://github.com/memorycoin/memorycoin/commit/05d26375cb17804bf2fa233678d0bb2dbea6321f

The old algorithm:
Code:
unsigned int static OldGetNextWorkRequired(const CBlockIndex* pindexLast, const CBlockHeader *pblock)
{
    unsigned int nProofOfWorkLimit = bnProofOfWorkLimit.GetCompact();

    // Genesis block
    if (pindexLast == NULL)
        return nProofOfWorkLimit;

    //Change difficulty every block based on the previous nInterval blocks

    //Timewarp bug fix
        // Go back the full period unless it's the first retarget after genesis. Code courtesy of Art Forz
     int nBlocksBack = nInterval-1;
    if((pindexLast->nHeight+1) != nInterval)
        nBlocksBack = nInterval;

     const CBlockIndex* pindexFirst = pindexLast;
    for (int i = 0; pindexFirst && i < nBlocksBack; i++)
         pindexFirst = pindexFirst->pprev;

     //assert(pindexFirst);
        if(pindexFirst==NULL){
        return nProofOfWorkLimit;
        }

    // Limit adjustment step
    int64 nActualTimespan = pindexLast->GetBlockTime() - pindexFirst->GetBlockTime();
    printf("  nActualTimespan = %"PRI64d"  before bounds\n", nActualTimespan);

    if (nActualTimespan < nTargetTimespan*0.8)
        nActualTimespan = nTargetTimespan*0.8;

    if (nActualTimespan > nTargetTimespan*1.2)
        nActualTimespan = nTargetTimespan*1.2;

    // Retarget
    CBigNum bnNew;
    bnNew.SetCompact(pindexLast->nBits);
    bnNew *= nActualTimespan;
    bnNew /= nTargetTimespan;

    if (bnNew > bnProofOfWorkLimit)
        bnNew = bnProofOfWorkLimit;

    /// debug print
    //printf("\n");
    printf("nTargetTimespan = %"PRI64d"    nActualTimespan = %"PRI64d"\n", nTargetTimespan, nActualTimespan);
    printf("Before: %08x  %s\n", pindexLast->nBits, CBigNum().SetCompact(pindexLast->nBits).getuint256().ToString().c_str());
    printf("GetNextWorkRequired RETARGET After:  %08x  %s\n", bnNew.GetCompact(), bnNew.getuint256().ToString().c_str());

    return bnNew.GetCompact();
}

The new algorithm:
Code:

Thanks, yes the fluctuation was stopping the mining due to high difficulty, FreeTrade applied this fix in just a few day, nice to him.

Buy the way, did you manage to remove the coin creation from the transaction chart, as we talked about before ?

Ok.  I just did it and it was quite easy.  The coinbase transactions are now excluded from the Transactions chart.  I should have done it ages ago.  It really didn't make sense to count the coinbase transactions because the first chart which counts blocks is the same thing as the number of coinbase transactions.  It's much more interesting now.  As I update the different currencies on the site, it will gradually take affect.  Right now, I've only run it on Bitcoin.  To make the transition clear, the old chart is called "Transactions" and the new chart is called "Transactions (non coinbase)".  That way you know if it's applied to a particular currency yet.  Are there any currencies you want me to update first?

http://cryptometer.org/42coin_96_hour_charts.html
http://cryptometer.org/42coin_90_day_charts.html

Note: I made the "Minted Currency" chart use micro-42s.  This is because the logarithmic scale does weird things to numbers between 0 and 1 and that's where all the data for this currency falls.  The numbers near 0 end up with large bars and the numbers near 1 end up with small bars.  This is the opposite of what we're used to seeing and makes my brain hurt.  Using mircro-42s scales the data by one million and gets nearly all of it out of 0 to 1 range.  Then the chart looks normal.
