Title: Holding one's liquor
Post by: Ian Maxwell on June 26, 2011, 03:10:24 AM
Why is "holding one's liquor" (i.e. alcohol tolerance) something to brag about?

Like, isn't the point of drinking to get tipsy (or at least relaxed)? Isn't accomplishing that task with less alcohol more efficient? Shouldn't you be trying to lower your tolerance, if anything?

(Yeah, I'm a bit tipsy as I write this. So what?)

If drinking is enjoyable, people who can hold their liquor are able to do more of it, deriving more pleasure from the experience.

No.

The point is to get tipsy, but not to find yourself in a hedgerow soaked in your own vomit. If you do achieve the latter, you have failed to hold your liquor.

It's pretty much dick measuring: It doesn't matter at all and no one should care.
