Title: Electrum wallet asks for google authenticator 2fa
Post by: xristos4 on October 13, 2017, 08:53:11 PM
dear all.
i am trying to send some BTC from my Electrum wallet, but it asks me to input my google authenticator code, which i did not set up. lately my phone was reseted and the google authenticator app lost its codes, but anyway, i did not set up my electrum wallet for this. ,i did have an sms authentication and i dont know how to actually use my BTCs now that i dont have the codes of the google authenticator.

i had exactly the same problem with the electron cash wallet today, and some options the Electron cash support team gave me did not work.

what am i supposed to do to not loose any BTC i have in that wallet?
should i restore on another pc, because it will probably not work on the original one, with my seed? do i need to disable the 2fa after i restore, before?

this is too complicated!!

Do you have your wallet seed? If so, you can disable 2FA.

In Electrum, create a new wallet with "File" -> "New/Restore" -> Select "Standard Wallet" or "Wallet with two-factor authentication" -> "I already have a seed" -> Paste your seed -> Select "Disable";

Should I do this on a separate pc or on the same one that i have my original wallet ? If i do it on my original pc, is there any danger to mess up my coins?

No. There is no risk of you losing your coins or whatsoever. Just restore your wallet, disable 2FA, and and preferably send your coins to another wallet (a normal wallet or just create a new 2FA where you know that you have access to the 2FA code); Don't forget to save your seed to save you from situations like this.

I wasn’t aware of this.

So I can set up a wallet on Electrum with a 2fa?

Yes, but do make sure that you read ALL of the fine print carefully... 2FA is provided using TrustedCoin's API... and using 2FA has a "per transaction" fee charged by TrustedCoin, which I believe has to be prepaid now.

Current charges as of 16/10/2017:

I've seen this happen a couple of times... usually completely shutting down Electrum and then trying again works for me...

Were you trying to restore your 2FA seed to a new standard wallet? or were you just creating a completely new wallet?
