They should be popping up or the first thing you check when you visit the forum, especially if they are new. If you don't know about PM in general. You might not notice. Different colour might be a lot more visible (like in red or so). It works well.

I had 5 messages and never realised until just now. It's not very obvious. It's be nice to have a plain blue banner at the top like you get on Wikipedia with new messages, not some obnoxious flashing red text though. However, SMF does not have sensible defaults. |
