Ethereum has seen a huge rise in its adoption as the platform new startups use in implementing their projects.
However, there are other platforms such as Waves that can do the same things Ethereum does ( even easily as Waves does not require any programming skills). Why can't new startups use the Ethereum alternatives? Is there any uniqueness in Ethereum that other platforms don't have? What makes Ethereum the in-thing?

That was causing by the ethereum is the only project that already developed very good infrastructure among others, As you can see the ethereum is platform is friendly for everyone rather than waves, Waves just another fail same as the lisk project.

Ethereum is the easiest I ever used and bug-free. (Well, just minimal). I only dislike ethereum's gas situation. I feel like its bit high.
Comparing Waves to eth, Waves' wallet is buggy and laggy. You can just try and see.

Ethereum's blockchain has mostly developed itself for sidechain for transacting custom tokens which can be made in user level.
The tokens as well as ethereum transactions can made to follow smart contract where the flow process once created would be decided by the results and can't be manipulated by anyone.

what adoption are you talking about?
there are only a large number of ICOs and all of them are useless copy pastes doing nothing. it is not called adoption my friend.
as for price, it is tanking these days, slow buy hard. even the fork couldn't change that. there is another -5% drop today.

and part of the reason why nobody uses other platforms is that ETH is staying on top of the lists because of its fake market cap, also because ETH is over-hyped and advertised to death, so every useless project tries to use that so called popularity to gain some small traction.

This is mainly due to the easy access to smart contracts which places a foolproof system and this is an ideal scenario for start ups at an affordable initial investment. Also keep in mind that Ethereum is an established platform running from a few years now which makes it more reliable than other similar platforms.

If you look at the market, you will see that the price of Ethereum is the best among other Altcoin or other crypto besides Bitcoin. Why is that ? Because I think ETH has a good platform and protocol. Some says that one day, ETH price can surpass the price of Bitcoin.

Although hard to believe, but with the rapid development of technology, we do not really know about what will happen in the future. The future of cryptocurrency is fascinating and full of mystery.

Other than that, all I can tell you again is .. Ethereum is also very good for mining nowadays. GPU mining for Ethereum is still profitable when compared to Bitcoin mining. Maybe for those who really understand about mining Bitcoin, can still get a profit from ASICMINER or similar devices. Which is devoted to mining Bitcoin quickly. But we must continue to do research to know exactly what we want to plan.

It is hard to find smart contract dev for other platforms like waves but there are lots of devs that can develop ETH based Dapps. Also ETH is getting first in the market benefit, it was the first platform for DAPPS.

Lisk might have bigger adoption in future because they are using javascript rather than any new coding language for DAPPS.

I don't know but i'm kind of sceptical to javascript. It's been used for different kind of attacks in the past... is it even safe when it gets to money?

Because it is the first and the easiest platform to use. Ethereum invented smart contacts and tokens and helped them to widespread. Waves is so buggy, you can not use it easily. Neo is somewhat new, there is no issued tokens -except RPX- and Chinese regulation hit Neo hard.

There are lots of successful projects created in Ethereum platform, such as Omisego, Waltonchain, Ubiq, Quantum, etc. There is no such things in other platforms.

Last but not least, Vitalik Buterin is very smart and respectful person in cryptocurrency world.

Are you sure about this, hero? I think there are still some projects out there that are as good or even better by Ethereum. It so happened that the old guys in crypto are behind Ethereum and the people they are hiring to promote Ethereum to be the strongest are doing a perfect job. Waves and Lisk are also very good. Whether intended or not Ethereum managed to establish itself as the go-to platform for ICOs, technically this could have been achieved by any other token creation platform like NXT for example, but Ethereum came and stole the show. Now it's hard to take this place from ETH as for convenient purposes people like to have all their tokens on the same platform and be able to trade them against the same base currency.

I agree that ethereum contract tokens really been doing more successful projects so far, and compared with waves I don't think most of those ICO offering their token were into better progress. With regards to friendly platform, I don't think it's a proper term but I'd rather say its a trusted and compatible type of token contract which has lots of projects this year. That's why it's earning massive appreciations and investors now were getting larger in numbers.

Like Bitcoin, it's a trend setter. The first of its kind. A big plus is the great leadership and devs. I'm still wondering why Vitalik chose to create solidity instead of implementing multiple languages like neo did, but regardless I have a great deal of faith in eth. Ethereum is the first project to introduce about smart contract. And it has come a long way. It also have many other feature coming and one of the biggest is changing from Proof of work to Proof of stake. The lightning network, ethereum alliances etc is something to be extremely excited about. Etherum is one altcoin that already has a long history. etherum may be said to be the sister of bitcoin. a good developer and also a unique system makes the etherum of interest to many investors. Maybe we can see one interesting feature that is TOKEN, this I think is quite new and was successful in increasing the use of etherum. because this token is now more and more projects are emerging, the project is based on etherum and we know the amount of money that rotates in all projects is very large. this has increased market share etherum globally because they (the project participants) are required to use etherum before exchanging to bitcoin or USD.

I don't know, maybe is the network effect? Ether was the first coin to offer this possibilities and build a network of supporters that started using their features. Maybe these new coins, like waves or neo, don't really offer that much of innovation, enough to start taking people away from ethereum. Not saying this is the case, because I mainly support bitcoin. But if most of the ICO investors are on the ethereum network, then ICOs will continue to use because there is where the money is, and when you are creating an ICO, it doesn't make sense to create it on all the platforms, so you create on the bigger one, since the other options don't offer any great improvements. This is just my opinion and I could be wrong of course.

In my opinion, it may be due to a lot of new Altcoins / tokens that use the erc20 or Ethereum platform. Well, this is what makes Ethereum special.

Well, the first on its platform is carried ico, second fast transactions, the third big growth potant, the fourth liquid coin.

I think the ability to execute Smart contracts is a big plus for Ethereum. This opens up the floodgates for creating large-scale decentralized applications which can tackle problems like elections, insurance, payments etc which are muddled with a lot of government red tape thus making any disruption in technology virtually impossible.

For example, there are many elections, even in developed countries in North America and Europe where elections are conducted via ballot paper or electronic voting machines even in 2017!! since are not perfect, we can't rule out the possibility of bad practices like corruption, erroneous counting etc.

Well for me i think ethereum is special because of unique features which allow many ICO to be listed. i dont think Wave technology can be compare with ethereum because waves is new compare to ethereum and it is still developing. i had so many saying ethereum is bug free. The ether appeared earlier and took a large share of the market. People are used to this. If a more advanced system appears, they replaces Ethereum, but it does not happen immediately.

Ethereum is special because nowadays approx 90% of ICO's using ERC20 tokens to their investors and those tokens are only eth wallet compatible and every investor require eth wallet to join ICO's. Also bounty campaigns, signatures and airdrops issue ERC20 tokens that also require eth wallet to get their coin so every crypto investor require eth and eth wallet.

The smart contract protocols of Ethereum is  the magic. The team behind Ethereum is strong and experienced. Also any ICO that is not using Ether will not be seen as serious or profit minded. I think it is bandwagon effect. The other alts are also good but has few patrons. 

Ethereum seems so special second to Bitcoin because it has it's own blockchain core and open-source system code that is also available in github so everyone can start their own ICO. So if companies that will develop a new flavor of digital currency then they'll make it from scratch or using the kit that they can get from Bitcoin's or Ethereum's

Their development team had the balls to actualize Satoshi's vision of a trustless peer to peer network with smart contracts that are programmable with a Turing complete (powerful and flexible) language.  There was a lot of 'too much security risk' and 'what if it got out of hand' and 'thats too hard to build' but they did it and succeeded.  Variants implemented aspects of this like colored coins for creating tokens on the blockchain, but Ethereum went the distance.  

They have the first mover advantage and they have developed a powerful platform which would compete anyways.

Ethereum is my favorite altcoin. It is easy to use and the price of it remains stable generally according to other altcoins. Its price is not satisfactory for now, but I hope it will be better in the future.

I think Ethereum is more stable cryptocurrency than bitcoin its not high volatile like bitcoin. Now a days most of the new startups of coins launching their coins on the ethereum platform & alternative of ethereum is waves platform but I dont see new startups took interest to launch their coins on Waves platform but they gave priority to ethereum and on the other hand mining of ethereum is also good to earn good money that's why ethereum is very special.

If you look closely you will notice that the rise in the value of Etherium has taken place starting from April of this year when it went parabolic. I believe that this was due to the ICO fever the we just witnessed and due to smart contracts eth was the obvious choice of most of the ICO's.

Saying ethereum is not volatile like bitcoin is wrong. I remember ethereum dropped down to $180 from $400 within weeks on this summer. As many pointed out, i'd just like to give you my experience with ethereum these past few days (and invite you to try for yourself). I made a bunch of eth and erc20 token transfers to and from etherdelta (decentralized exchange) and almost all tx's went through on the next few blocks in less than a minute, costing around $0.02 each one... Tell me this isn't freakin awesome!!

It's not special at all, there are many other platform based crypto that can compete with eth like NEM and ARK, what makes it stand out though is it's "early-mover" advantage. They obviously hyped it a lot to gain market attention, and that's where new projects notice it first before seeing other platform based crypto options to build the ICO's on.

You can do the same analogy with privacy coins, Dash and XMR has the top spot in that category, but it doesn't make them special at all when it comes to features. Deep Onion is a great competitor to them, has a whole lot more features (like DeepVault, DeepSend etc.) but it isn't in the top spot yet as dash and xmr had the early mover advantage, same as ETH. But one thig is for sure, DO, would definitely go up in the future, so try to own a piece of the coin if you want to go to the moon :)

As for eth, no one can tell the future of it, it may have the top spot now but someone will surely take over it in a few years to come if they can't keep up.

Ethereum is easy to use and can easily understand, especially if you are a newbie and just starting into alternative coins. The organization of the development community around Ethereum has been great.  Consensys has been a powerhouse in the community and continues to invest into good development, across the whole stack, from development tools, to protocols to end user apps.  I haven't seen that replicated in any altcoin yet though I don't claim to be an expert in altcoins.  I know Tezos, for instance, promised $50m to startups using Tezos, but it's still a far cry from the Consensys team.
