Title: Placing GPU on cardboard
Post by: Aperson123 on June 07, 2013, 02:08:37 PM
So i have an extra 7950 that wont fit in my case so I got risers and I was wondering is it safe to place it on cardboard above my case or if there is a better way to mount it somewhere and if so on what. https://www.dropbox.com/s/0sha7gvkxe2d3hj/GPU.jpg This is the most current picture I have the white represents the out line of the box I would use and the red is the GPU before you ask the case has another I have to gpus already in the case as of now and the case is laying down flat. Box i would use is either a newegg box or the box the gigabyte 7950 came. So if you have had either you know what im talking about.

I think that if you make sure that the card can be properly cooled, and you don't obstruct the airflow, you don't have to worry.

So we all kinda agree this is fine and the card board wont combust?

Cardboard probably wont catch fire until ~230c

NOT A GOOD IDEA.
In b4 fire dept.
If you have to, layers and layers of aluminum foil, or hang it off standoffs.
BUT NEVER CARDBOARD.
You're all goddamn firebugs. :o

I am a newbie here but have been designing electronics for quite some years.  I'd definitely avoid placing this kind of device on a card board.

Why?

Theres nothing wrong with using cardboard as long as your card is running at over 200c, otherwise your safe. Paper ignites at a temperature of over 200c. Also and dont wrap a GPU in aluminum please dont put aluminum anywhere in a PC either.

I actually have mine sitting on the upper lip of the case. It's stable, and there is only plastic contacting the metal.

plastic contacting the metal
works better than cardboard.
Also, I should correct myself. You'd only want aluminum to support the heatsink, never directly touching the board, per Kaeopura.
